"Then your momma's stupid too. Everyone gets hurt; even girls." If they didn't, then how would they get stronger? Or learn? Adenah didn't like getting hurt, not at all, but she knew from her own mother how important it was to push through it.
She cocked a brow and harumphed. "I'll be your sister if you stop treatin' me like that. Like I can stand up for myself. Just cuz I could beat up once doesn't mean it will happen again."
Adenah brushed her hair behind her ears, and stood up a little straighter; a little prouder too. "She protects you tho, right? So girls can protect boys." She nodded, as if her own reasoning was flawless. "My momma has her own group of guys that she leads into battle. She protects them all; what'cha think 'bout that?"
