"So we don't even have fries back on the island? What the hell you even eat then?" He possessively moved his plate a little closer, staring back down at it and back up.
This was far more important information on how to raise in rank to something else, though what benefits that that would give him he didn't know at all.

Al decided to be bluntly honest. "Depends who gets stuck on that duty but usually something blobby that could eat through your plate if you're not careful. I don't even care what they call the stuff anymore, most of it's inedible so a lot of people live on food from the vending machines and -" This was important and Al raised his voice and sounded more stern. "Do not eat, drink, use, wear, smell, or touch anything with runes on it that isn't a weapon." This sounded important. "I learned that the hard way once."

Kai paused in his eating to just stare at Al. "I have no idea what that even is." He said honestly. He looked at his own plate and back at him.
"Is it on food like this?" He said, pointing at his half-eaten mountain.

"Maybe," Al admitted. He wasn't completely sure of the logistics as he just avoids anything with runes now. "But usually when I see it, it's on the wrapper or the vending machine... or the stuff has a weird glow to it. If you don't recognize it, then don't touch it." He decided not to specify anything about runic condoms as Harrison liked giving that speech and he's pretty sure he's being vague enough that the warning clearly covered those too should the man ever come across them.
"What are you doing after lunch?" He decided to urge the conversation away from the horrible.

"Kay I'll look for that." And was at least glad his current food was not a threat, even if he ate a bit more slowly.
"No clue. Whatever they tell me I guess." He said with a shrug. "Whatcha doing?"

"Usually the runes are applied to the container," someone said. "The contents gain an effect by being in close contact with runes for an extended time. Like the experimental coffeepots in the labs, the runes are on the bottom and the effect leaches into the coffee over time, that's why you have to be really careful to use only the safe ones." Noah appeared next to Al, carrying a plate of his own and wearing the I'm-being-helpful expression. "So technically if there were runes on the pots or dishes this food could have effects, but I don't think there are, it should be safe. This isn't an experimental area."

"I was thinking about exploring the area a bit," Al answered. His head suddenly jerked back at the familiar voice and he scooted over a bit to give Noah a bit more room so her could comfortably face Kai while sitting next to himself.
"Oh! Kai, this is my boyfriend Noah. Noah, this is Kai." He smiled uncontrollably between the two of them. "Noah is really smart," he added a subtle stamp of approval on Noah's statement.

Kai stared at them both and then waved at Noah. "Yo. So like, we get crap food and if it has stuff on it then it's poison. Like, what's a rune look like?"

"It's cafeteria food," Noah shrugged and took a seat next to Al, nodding hello to Kai. "I don't think cafeteria food anywhere is good. Except here, someone good is cooking, I wish they'd do cooking duty at home. Um, runes are like, runes. Symbols. They glow. Your weapon has runes on them," he offered helpfully.

Al suddenly summoned forth Nuru, his staff, and held him up. "These," he pointed to the various glowing violet markings that patterned the wood-like surface. Al clearly had no problems just whipping it out.

Kai however was not okay with people just materializing glowing sticks out of thin air. "******** hell!" He jerked back and up out of his seat, now fully standing and looking like a deer in front of a semi.

Noah had taken a bite of his burger. His mouth full, he couldn't scold Al, so he just kicked his boyfriend's ankle as he chewed and swallowed. Once his mouth was clear again, he said, "Put him away, jeez, we're eating here."

"Ow!" Al yelped exaggeratedly at the kick but promptly obeyed. The staff disappeared as quickly as it appeared. Al slouched in his seat and sulkily poked at his fries with his fork.

Weapon gone, Kai slowly sat back down but seemed far less interested in his food now. "Still messed up you guys just show up with that stuff out of the air."

Noah blinked at Kai over his burger, looking puzzled. "Yours does the same thing," he pointed out. "Are you new? You get used to it pretty fast."
