Larak huffed a laugh towards the lion, no wonder his mother had attacked him if he was foolish enough to leap at her without warning. Good intentions or no, the lion was stupid. Just looking at Gren should have warned him that she was not a lioness that would take kindly to this 'protection' as he put it.

At his mother's inquiry in their natural tongue, he gave a shrug and replied in the same language.

"Hard to say without knowing more. We must pry the information from him." He smiled at this, glancing at Nuri to see if she approved and then in a language the lion would understand he asked. "Tell us more of this beast. Perhaps to prove it's existence we ought to throw you into the water, hm?"

Having heard the sound of his mate's roar - there was no mistaking it - Gael frowned and turned his gaze in the direction it had come from. He saw his son trot off in the direction of Gren, and after a moment followed at a slower pace. His mate certainly didn't need his protection nor his aid in battle and it didn't sound like there was any real attempt at a fight going on, so there was no rush.

As he approached he spotted Gren, Larak, and another member of the pride standing around a strange male. He narrowed his eyes as he approached but remained silent, listening to the conversation. One brow rose as he glanced over at the rather green water, harmless and still. For now, at least.

He remained still and silent, simply another body and physical presence to back up his family and Nuri's verbal assault.

---

Saran gave a little scowl as a disturbance was kicked up not far from where she stood. Looking over, she saw a few lions heading in the direction of the roar, but she was more interested in what the desert had to offer. It seemed Mchawi was set on exploring as well, so she didn't bother heading off to see what the fuss was about. She left the snarling and scrapping to the Braak, after all.

"I wasn't there personally, to witness it, but I did hear about it. From her descriptions, she was most definitely one of the false gods that called these temples home." Ramla paused, looking up at an old structure. The decorative paints that had been on it, once upon a time before lions had taken up residence, had been worn away by sand, rain, and time. She momentarily hummed at it, then looked at the various temples. Finally, she pointed, "That one was the one the pharaoh and high priestess were allowed in, nobody else." Now, she grinned, "It's good to be back in an old home, and it's going to be wonderful to laugh in the face of those old rules and see just what they were hiding in there."

Home sweet home... When Ngoma thought of home, he thought of towering sand dunes and blistering sun, rain that didn't fall for long or sometimes at all. He thought of a pride that kept slaves for the sake of keeping slaves, to make them do the work around the pride that nobody else wanted to. He thought, too, of the heavily-scarred lioness his family had had, who had slipped away when the Simo had joined the Safi in a moment of weakness. Lost in his own thoughts, he didn't respond to Mchawi's question.

==

One eyebrow lifted as Nuri, too, looked to the water. Her tail shifted and swayed, brushing up a small cloud of dust as it passed over the ground. She took in not only the deceptiveness of the still water, but any marks on the shore around it. Finally, she turned back to Gren and Larak, "He may actually speak the truth. Beware the still waters, for a crocodile may lurk there, and a crocodile is not something to be treated lightly." Indeed, if there were anything in the mortal world Nuri feared and respected, it was, without a doubt, crocodiles. High on the list with them were elephants, rhinos, hippos, some snakes, and bees.

Zeki sim Sungus hadn't been far from the group, though after arriving he had taken a moment to himself to seek out small details - as some may have known he often prided himself on knowing those small details, details that may have otherwise been over looked. Of course to his dismay that meant missing out on a rather curious turn of events at the roar and echo depicting a rather unfortunate soul had found it's way into the grasp of Gren. Gren was a lioness he hadn't come to know personally, but he certainly knew of her - she hadn't any need for a helping paw in defending herself and so as much as he was concerned it hadn't been for the well being of the lioness, but more so a disbelief that he'd missed something.

All it took was the outburst to call Zeki back to the group. Brown eyes took in the entire scenario and as some others investigated the shoreline as well as the murky waters he to found himself collecting as much information with his eyes as he could. It was true that the likely case was the waters weren't safe, the outsider could be right and providing them with the truth.

"We'll begin our search there, in that case." She put on a brave face though in truth she was nervous. The seers had seen something lurking here amongst the shadows. A danger that they couldn't quite see. Such a thing was not to be ignored and the slinking male at her side had been the one to have seen it first - much to her annoyance. For such a pitiful creature his ability was rather...powerful.

Kefir - the pitiful creature - peered across at the female as she spoke to heartlessly of her old home. Had it truly been so bad here? It was hard to tell from the shell it was now, but he could imagine cubs at play in the shade and victorious huntresses dragon prey across the sand, leaving trails behind them.

"What rules did you hate so much?" he asked, surprising himself.

"Be quiet, kaar," Mchawi interrupted him almost immediately. "or do you forget you have a job to do?"

He hung his head and clamped his jaw shut.

"The Nergui have their customs, but from what little I have gleaned already, they had strict limits on their members. What makes this land anymore sacred and important than another? Whatever this pride had once been, no one stuck around to try and revive it. What does that tell you?"

Kefir said nothing more.

The Kaar Oma hesitated on the threshold, craning her head to peer up at the cold mass looming above them. This was perfect. Such an illustrious place to make her home whilst they lingered here.

With a smile - that looked quite unkind on her face - Mchawi stepped within, taking delight in the cold shadows that fell across her back. Over time the place had started to crumble, letting shafts of light fall down into the room. The smell within was less pleasant. Musty and retched. Rat droppings, most like. The female sneezed and beside her, Kefir jumped.

"I don't think we're alone in here..." he whispered ominously.

---

With a loud snort, Gren released her captive and watched as he staggered back - his heels close to the water's edge now. Crocodiles could lunge from the water - she'd seen it. Maybe they'd get their proof of the 'monster' that the young male was jabbering about...though, to be honest, she wasn't sure whether she wanted to bear witness to a lion being dragged to it's death in the murky waters.

The male, Tabu, glanced towards the adolescent and opened his mouth to reply, "never seen anything like it. Huge. So many teeth. It must be very old to have grown so large." The fact that the strangers spoke a different dialect seemed to have thrown him a little.

Gren, at seeing Gael approach, moved over to his side - though she gave no word of greeting.

Tabu, glancing over the shoulders of those who had gathered around him, gave another nervous sort of chitter, "there are...a lot of you here."

Temple lions/hyenas:
roll one 4-sided dice. The first (and maybe second) person to roll a 2 might find more than they bargained for.

Waterside lions/hyenas:
if there is any Nergui around who is mean enough (I know there are some!) then take this as permission to push Tabu into the water if so desired)

~ Dawnwalkers ~

Quote:
User Image Kowab was a scribe, and to this day- he would be. He never left his home, and this was partly due to the pride welcoming him after much turmoil and for that he felt in debt to them, even if the pride had dissipated. Those that were left, that still had cubs about, he would teach them of the dawnwalker way but his cubs, he urged them to find a new land. Most, he had heard went to the pridelands, while the others grew caravans to lands far away. Occasionally they would get a visit, or a group. He- or his eldest daughter would tour them. If they needed a healer, he referred them to an older lioness. Ebio'Femi, a lioness born in the glory days of the pride. She helped to adopt him in to the pride, and he had grown to also see her as a sort of mother figure. One of comfort in the whole pride.

Last night, he was up graphing the stars in the highest point of the pride. A ruin that had towered the rest. Here, is where he would make vases of his findings or paint the images he had seen in them. It wasn't uncommon for him to fall asleep there, and that was precisely what he had been doing.

Quote:

User Image Mahpari hadn't left, not like her siblings had to the new lands. She rivaled her father in smarts, and astrology became a passion of hers. Her nights were mostly spent with her father, mapping the stars and patterns in the sky, but since the disbandment, she had also begun to tour or lead others through the area, and taught many rogues and even disbanded members to use star navigation. Something her father's colleges had produced. Today, she had helped to hunt an addax. Surprisingly big and she owed that to her another member. The other took the responsibility of distributing.

The huge lump of dark fur safely under the casted shadows from the top of the ruin. "Wake up~~~" She nudged his side. "Wake up dad~" Putting her forepaws against him to try and shake the sleeping giant.

Quote:

User Image Ebio'femi was further from her ruin home. She had moved when she announced being a healer instead of a teacher. From them on, and in to her adulthood- her home was the home of many pregnant lioness, and many illed lions. But now her home was quite empty, not when an occasional rogue would come to her steps, dehydrated and delusional. But today, and for months now- there was silence. Her lifemate, Glozelle had left to find new lands for them, or so she understood so she waited for him. But that too, was nearly a year ago and after her second litter grew to adults and fled the nest, she was just too weak to leave. With Glozelle, maybe he could help her but she was simply not in a condition to venture far.

Picking a few cactus to bring back to her small ruin home. That was until Marthin came with great speed to her.

Quote:

User Image "Miss Ebio~" He spoke with softness. "We need to get you back home."

"Why, what is it?"

"There has been a group of lions spotted not too far off from the old boarders."

"They could be a caravan trying to seek rest and safe passage."

"Miss... something tells me that isn't what their after."

Marthin was a gifted cub, and was put in Ebio'Femi's care by a rather interesting lioness. What she didn't know, was Marthin was the son of a Goddess. The goddess of Messengers to be exact. Like her, all his messenges, they were urgent.

"If you say so."

When her question was met with no reply, Kimya sighed and went on her way, keeping out of the way from the Kaar Oma and looking casually about what she could only assume would be their new home, even if it was just for a few days. Kimya was beginning to realize that she would never quite understand when or how long the pride would be traveling for and while that may be taxing for some, she was more than happy to be on her paws. After spending so much time wandering the rogue lands on her own, she had gotten more than used to walking without knowing her destination at the end.

Now deciding to keep her wondering to herself, rather than bother anyone else with it, she slowly inched away from the group and cast her gaze onto the horizons. What would they find in this new territory? It definitely looked abandoned, but would there be some form of danger lurking in the shadows of the ruins? Kimya still did not think herself much of a fighter, despite being drawn to the Nergui by their fighting as they traveled, but she had no doubt in her mind that this pride could protect themselves should they be attacked.

Larak's patience was not endless and with the lion's latest response it was starting to wear thin. Now the lion made it sound as though he were just trying to scare the onlookers and Larak glanced to his mother for the briefest of moments. Maybe she had been correct and this lion was trying to hide something. Larak's curiosity, a powerful thing and sometimes one that got him into trouble, was beginning to grow at the notion of discovering a secret, but the notion of crocodiles was the only thing that kept him at bay from moving closer to the water's edge.

"Our patience wears thin." He snarled at the stranger suddenly, speaking for the group and fixing a glare on the lion. "Skip the theatrics or pay dearly for wasting our time." This was no empty threat, but Larak would only rough up the lion a little. He, like his mother, had no desire to see sudden crocodile carnage, if such thing was even real and not some stupid fib this lion told.

Nyek's eyes flicked to Saran. He found her green eyes to be quite pretty. He nodded, silently, and followed her gaze as her head turned towards the disturbance. The large male glanced back at her, wondering what her course of action would be. He might as well stick by some companion during this outing. Though he was large and with seer abilities, he knew there were some things that even were too much for him to tackle alone. There was always strength in numbers.

Awiti had been quite distracted when Kimya came alongside her, and only noticed when the lioness left her side. She gave a small start, and followed the grey and blue lioness as she padded off, her violet eyes bright and curious. She became aware of foreigners as the other Nergui honed in on them. Her fur stood on end with excitement and anticipation.

Would anyone die?

This was so exciting.

Tabu gave a short, juddering series of nods and then backed further up, turning his eyes downwards as if in search of something. Gren gave a low, stifled growl but did not move from her position beside her mate. She was slow to trust at the best of times and she wasn't quite convinced by his story...yet.

"H-here. Watch this," the young male rolled a stone beneath a paw and turned his body to face the water. Slowly, he lowered his head and took the stone in his mouth, pausing a moment before taking a step back. In seconds he was thrusting the stone out into the water - using all the strength he could muster. The stone hit the water with a loud 'splosh' that sent a funnel of water up into the air.

Gren's whiskers tilted forwards in anticipation.

And then, just when she was about to call him a liar, something surfaced...

It was the briefest of glimpses but the spiked back that broke the water's surface was enough to confirm the lion's story. The tail thrashed a moment later and then was gone, lost amongst floating debris once more. The boy had been right. Going into that water was a death sentence.

Gren felt her dry throat grow tighter and, after a moment, had to concede, "story true. Big crocodile."

Tabu let out a sigh of relief and sat on the bank.

However, now that his actions had been answered, perhaps it was time to ask him who he was, exactly, and what he was doing there.

Ramla's nose twitched as she peeked past the kaar oma into the cool darkness. As her eyes adjusted, she took in everything she could. "Whatever the pharaoh and high priestess did in here, I've no idea. What went on in the sacred spaces was kept secret. I'm not sure even the pharaoh's mate and children knew... Or the lower priests and priestesses." She was feeling absolutely giddy, eager to see just what was hidden beyond. What secrets did the temples hold, that Pharaoh and the High Priestess hadn't wanted everybody to know?

Ngoma looked at Kefir as he started to follow Mchawi in. Of COURSE the simpering little kaar would be afraid, when wasn't he afraid? "No duh we're not alone, there's birds every-" He stopped, nose twitching. "We're not alone, no... And it's nobody in the hoard." Immediately, he took a defensive posture, stepping into the temple to scan the darkness. Silently, he hoped his eyes adjusted quickly, lest something come out of the dark at them.

==

When Nuri's patience was about to grow thinner, the male rolled a rock in. She hadn't been expecting anything, if there really WERE a crocodile, as the oldest and biggest were no stupid beasts. They couldn't typically be fooled with only a rock or stick, knowing well what was the ripple of an object versus the ripple of something alive. But indeed, just breaking the surface, for a moment, was a great beast. She stepped instinctively back, frowning. "Okay, yeah... We need to find different water." Her gaze turned, then, to the male. She wasn't as big as Gren, by any means, nor as powerful, but she had enough umf to give him a hard shove, "Okay, smart guy, who are you and where did you come from? Why are you here?" If he was a seer, and knew to come to these lands to warn them, he'd be a useful kaar, at the least. Wimpy, but still useful.

Kimya was skulking about the temple ruins when she fake someone come up behind her and she turned around with bared teeth, only to find it was only Awiti beside her. She relaxed and smiled at the other lioness and then continued to pad along, secretly happier for the company.

I wonder what we'll find out here." She remarked to her companion. Something new, for sure, but hopefully something not too dangerous. Kimya wasn't sure she was ready to go headlong into some fight, nor was she ready to sacrifice the lioness beside her if it meant getting her own self to safety. Was she really ready for the Nergui's standards of what a lion should be?

Awiti could only shrug to her companion and offer guesses.

"Something interesting, I hope." 'Interesting' had many definitions for the odd lioness.

"Maybe something useful for the hoard, for Tra Ord Omak or at least our Kaar Oma." She wasn't wholly certain what these things might be, or that she would recognize them if she ever saw them, but that didn't bother her. She had not been born a member of the Nergui, so its customs were sometimes lost even to her after all these years.

Her lilac eyes peered into the darks of the ruins and crumbling rocks curiously, but she neither saw anything nor did she See anything. Oh well, the lioness mused. Either it was dull enough to forget about or something would be revealed soon enough.

User ImageDakka gra-Gren was in the small crowd around the watering hole, having arrived shortly after her brother. She knew her mother could hold her own, but family was important to her. She gave her father Gael a slow blink when he arrived. Their family watched each others back, no matter if it was needed or not.

The young female followed the discussion about what to do with the stranger without adding her opinion. She preferred to get things done without having to get physical. Why get into a fight when you could scare the weak minded into doing what you wanted? If someone had decided to test the water using the interloper she wouldn't have tried to stop them, but she was glad it didn't come to that. When the huge beast broke the water she momentarily lost her cool and back-pedalled with more haste and less grace than usual. She glanced around to see if someone had noticed, and then moved closer to the stranger, joining Nuri in her attempt at interrogating.

"We will know if you lie to us," she suggested in a soft voice, staring at the stranger as if she was daring him to try.

Eerin had jumped on the opportunity to get out of the sun and do some exploring. The "forbidden" temple had a funky scent, but at least it was much cooler than being sand-baked outside. She padded around, sticking her nose wherever looked interesting. Sound bounced around in a really weird way in here, but she didn't let that rattle her. It was probably just the others making noise while searching the place.

"Find something?" she called, using the Nergui language.

Mchawi's muzzle wrinkled in distaste. This 'pharaoh' had certainly thought a lot of himself. What had he done that had demanded such respect? Perhaps, as time, they might reveal some of what had transpired but she doubted he was a lion of much significance. Likely just born into his rank where he sat greedy and lazy on his throne.

"Perhaps the pharaoh lingers, still," she declared with a growl, stepping into the 'sacred' room with all the courage one would have expected from someone such as she.

Bolstered by the huge, hulking presence of Ngoma, she called out, "show yourself. There is nowhere to run now." Her voice echoed from the walls of the chamber and as her eyesight began to adjust she saw that this forbidden place was rather plain - at first glimpse. It was large and cool with cracks that let in a few slithers of sunlight and allowed some plants to set root. Near the centre of the room was a raised platform - an altar - in which some overturned trinkets lay.

And beyond that...a pair of eyes.

User Image

"You finally arrived," a sultry voice floated through the darkness towards them, "welcome to the abandoned temple, Kaar Oma. We have been awaiting you."

"We?" Kefir's voice trembled.

"Ah yes, my companion is somewhere close." The shape alighted upon the alter and peered down at them. She was a creature of shadow herself, wrapped in a pelt that was not her own. She smiled and her teeth glinted - as did the whites of her eyes. "Do not fear me, little lion, I am one of you now."

"How did you know where we were going?" Mchawi demanded, not trusting the dark female in the slightest.

"The ravens told us and a small group can travel quicker than many," she blinked slowly, "I come bearing messages for Xakaav Oma."

---

Tabu gulped and seemed to gather himself together for questions, "a rogue," he explained simply. "I've been a rogue all my life. I came here tracking a small herd, hoping to pick off one of the lame ones. I followed them to this water and whilst they drank my prey was grabbed by the crocodile." His ears dropped, "I haven't had the energy to move from here since," he cast a glimpse at a young female he had not noticed before then. Her fur was pale, like the early morning mist. It seemed a number of these lions were related. A good family amongst the so-called barbarians that were the Nergui.

He was lucky.

"I have no reason to lie, Miss. I just didn't want anyone to be hurt - or worse - by that crocodile. That's all." He blinked and cast another look around him, "I thought the pride here had long gone. I do apologise if I strayed into your lands unknown. Are you nomadic?"

---

User Image

Eerin would be answered by a strange, amused voice, coming back at her in the common tongue.

"I did," it said and then, out of the darkness, a hyena leaped out from some fallen debris - cloaked in the skin of a pale feline. She bared her teeth and snarled, shifting into an aggressive stance and making a false lunge at the other female hyena.

"You took your sweet time," she said accusingly.
