Limbree had heard the place abuzz with news that the Zeppelins were ready to launch, this was days ago. She had insisted to her parents that she was going to be on one of those to make the maiden voyage across the skies. She wanted to see these other lands that everyone was talking about. The problem was getting on, surely you had to be good at something, right. She was good at making things work? Well that didn't seem like the best of things to say when signing up for a Zeppelin ride.
'So how did you make it on?' asked one of the other passengers, they had come to stand beside Limbree as she looked out the window.
"I'm good with tinkering and maintaining things. I've been keeping an eye on things." But she was taking a slight break to see where they were.
In truth she wished they were there already, in this Tendaji place. It sounded like a dream. New lands and people, she had to wonder if there were people there to begin with. Were there creations like her own home? There were many questions that rattled around in Limbree's head that she didn't know where she would start. Turning away from the window, the Geian female walked back towards the contraption that kept them afloat. Everything was in working order and the pressure was staying constant, these were good signs.
Well it was until one started to raise, frowning Limbree tweaked one of the pressure valves to try and release the steam. Only thing was, it wasn't going down the way she liked. Brows furrowing, the Geian turned the valve a little more before grabbing a hold of the closest took and whacked it against the pipe. With a sudden rush of steam and heat and bits of soot, the pressure went down and things seemed to go back to normal. Well, that was one way of doing things... Limbree only hoped that it didn't damage anything important.
"At least that disaster was averted." Limbree muttered to herself as she moved away before anyone came running to see what happened.
Cleaning her face with a rag, Limbree wandered back to where everyone else was, leaving the engines to those who really knew how they worked. She only new to whack things if they didn't want to function. Most times it worked, sometimes it didn't and left something damaged.. All for the best that she stayed away from the engines for now.
"Land sighted!" came the call that they had reached Tendaji.
Lifting her head, Limbree's heart started to beat faster, they had made it! Well her mind was on what was to happen, not on what had happened. Behind her the machine that she had whacked with the tool started to sputter. Before she could turn and head back, part of it blew outward, spewing flames and embers. The area around the machine caught fire and started to spread to the fuel stores.
CRAP! Limbree moved quickly trying to beat out the fire with a wet cloth, but it wouldn't help against the spread. Calling back to some others that were in the area, to help she found that it wasn't going to end well.
"This is not what I had wanted to happen!" Limbree growled to herself as she kept trying. "Everyone will kill me if they find out..."
As the flames spread around her, someone grabbed Limbree around the waist and tossed her back towards the ladder out of the engine room. A loud voice shouted at her to go up and tell the captain what happened and to ready everyone for a potential crash landing. She could only hope that the other ship fared better then this. Up she clambered as fast as she could, reaching the top she pushed through those hovering close to the hatch.
"Out of the way! Move!" Limbree shouted as she made her way towards the helm of the craft. "Captain, the engine blew out. Fire spreads." She huffed, eyes wide.
'Get everyone to the sides, try and get that fire out before it reaches the rafters. Prepare for a fast landing!' the captain barked, though his gave remained on her. 'How did this happen?' he demanded.
"I don't know, it was fine then BOOM. fire everywhere." Limbree tried to explain, but the captain had turned away and was barking orders to others as they neared the Sauti area.
Feeling she had been dismissed, Limbree moved away from the helm area and towards the rest of the gathering. She would blend in with the rest even if she was covered in soot and smudges. What else could have gone wrong? Their first voyage across the seas and she had messed it up... Perhaps she should have just stayed home in Belrea...
Land loomed ever closer as trees started to scratch the bottom of the zeppelin bottom. The snapping of branches echoed throughout as they descended quite more rapidly then wanted. They was not going to be good, were they going to be a smear on this new land? No, they would make it! They were a hardy kind of people. Turning away from the railing, Limbree headed towards the engine room. Most the fire had been safely smothered out, but there was still some coming from the machine itself.
"Can we smother that flame?" Limbree called down as she had her head down through the hatch. "It seems to be the source."
'No kidding, tell us something we don't know' came a chorus of angry voices the made her duck back.
Well they didn't have to be that rude about it. Frowning she moved away again. It was not her mess. It was not her mess, she repeated to herself in her mind. Trying to put her thoughts more on where they were to land, rather then then what had happened below, though the guilt was there and it stung.
