"Do you mean nanobots or golems?" Mark said between two mouthfuls of cupcakes already. It sounded more like 'Du uff nano or gogo?'

He swallowed. "Yeah so the GPS is pretty standard, you also get the tablet, I guess, even though it's just Deus-owned, so mostly everyone is just on a rental lease and it comes with voice messaging and e-mail." He was on full tech mode, picking out a third cupcake. "If you open up the tracking app, there's a feature to search for different categories, like strong Fear signals on island, Joy and so on. It's not so good with picking up runes underwater, and I just fixed all that weird crystal stuff that was going on, but yeah it'll track any active tagged droids, even though only like five people actually have working ones, and I think Lucky exploded one?"

Mark thought about telling the part where people would probably be quite upset if Caroline disassembled any droids but decided it wasn't really that important. He picked out a forth cupcake and tossed it entirely on reflex to Lucky, entirely in a great mood because he had gotten money and cupcakes. It was a bad idea mentioning the word 'cult' in front of Lucky, and he was trying to divert topics. "What'cha looking to find exactly?"

The part about being 'Deus-owned' was immediately scrubbed from her memory, largely for the sake of her own mental health, as she hurriedly snatched up her half of the exchange.

"Robots," she reiterated, her unblinking stare fixated on the screen. "An umbrella term that references any machines which are semi-autonomous at a minimum, created and programmed to perform predetermined tasks, actions, or duties. Industrial, personal nano, bio, android...et cetera."

This was possibly the first time she'd sounded almost uncannily like Mimsy to anyone who knew her.

"Want any robots." She flopped back onto her bed, screen held above her head, and mindlessly pat the extra space next to her, inviting them to sit (or lay, the debate had never really been settled). "What else--I mean, what's good to find here? Aside from that. You got any adventures on here?"

Her eyes pulled away from the screen long enough to glance at Lucky for half a second. "What's he mean, 'exploded one'? Wait--oh my god, can we go blow s**t up? Not this--this is mine. Other people's s**t."

If Lucky hadn't been sure Caroline and Mimsy were related, he was now. "Don't, uh, don't worry about it."

"Well when you put it that way, of course it sounds bad," Lucky countered Mark, though he made no effort to defend his involvement in the fate of the missing/exploded droid. He may have looked on at Caroline's shiny new tablet just a little jealously, at least until Mark curveballed at cupcake at him. He barely managed to catch it, dropping the cell phone in the process.

"HEY. I only blow things up accidentally," he insisted again at Caroline's pointed look.

"In a controlled environment," Mark amended, though it wasn't clear who's part of the conversation he was amending. "Bro, I tell people I blow up things accidentally, and nobody ever believes me, way ahead of you."

His head was halfway into processing a funny joke involving blowing other things (yes, in that way), but the threesome was looking less and less appealing after his fifth cupcake. "Yeah sure we can test the gps out, is there anything in particular you want to blow up?"

She was a trainee what could go wrong. Besides, "We can bring Lucky as our demolitions expert, he's great at that kind of stuff. "

All that Caroline took away from these arguments about the explosions being accidental was that explosions were entirely feasible, as long as they were the wink-nudge sort of accident. That was manageable, and this was something she wanted to get in on.

"Wooo!" She sprung up from the bed, tablet clutched to her chest, and made a victorious fistpump above her head. "Let's go make 'accidents' together!"

After eagerly pushing past them to get out of her room and into the hallway, she turned and gestured for them to hurry up. She wasn't wearing any shoes, and didn't seem at all interested in changing that.

"So let's--uh, what's there to blow up? One of those...the training dummies? Rocks? A house?"

"We could," Mark started amicably, still incredibly pleased he had been treated so well. This was probably only the second time in his life he had actually been offered cupcakes that didn't cause him to grow double D's, "or we could find something to explode. Usually the Sun trainees are pretty good about volunteering for that kind of stuff -"

Suddenly the Death Assistant pause, and developed a sort of sly expression. Honestly, it just looked like he was thinking way too hard (which he was). "Wait a minute, I have an even greater idea. You see I'm supposed to go on a mission later today, and it requires ah, exploding stuff, and I need some help on board, and I know Lucky loves missions."

The gave her a reassuring thumbs up.

"I don't know about this. They're still taking the last one out of my pay," Lucky lamented from beside Caroline.

Lucky gave Mark an incredulous look at the idea, but relented after a few seconds and glanced away. "Okay. Fine. I mean, I don't think I can leave both of you alone together unsupervised."

"A mission?" Her nose scrunched up in vague disgust. It sounded like work, work for people she didn't especially want to working for in the first place, and a 'no' was on the tip of her tongue until she remembered the reason he'd suggested it.

"Oh. Oh! s**t! You're taking us to--we're going to blow up a Death Star."

That made plenty of sense, considering the context.

"Okay, Rebels. C'mon then." Despite having no idea where they were going, she seemed to be trying to lead their Rebellion by urging them along. While pulling on Mark's arm and reaching for Lucky's, she leaned towards the latter to 'reassure' him. "You're coming but--listen, maybe your daddy had you thinking something different about me, but I'm--I don't need supervising. You're funny!"

She gave him a playful nudge with her shoulder.

Despite being roped into a pseudo-friendship loop, Mark tried to edge as far away as possible from whatever Caroline was insinuating to Lucky. He wanted none of that.

"Rebel pilots," he corrected, wanting to correct the part about blowing up am actual Death Star but not having the heart to. "You guys are the pilots I mean, I am one-hundred percent Jedi Master all up in here."

He stood up, and looked at his phone, and then sighed. "Okay see you guys there in fifteen at the Lighthouse, bring oh I dunno, bring something warm to dress. And something nice."

Mark and his lead would be waiting there, Caelius seemed to have acquired a newer coat as all the little gold pieces were looking super lustrous. Upon seeing Lucky arrive, the Death lead promptly left to the portal, leaving Mark hanging half-sentence trying to explain something about how to change an e-mail password.

"Oh thank god," the Death assistant sighed, closing his laptop in relief. "Grab a headset, I bought some pizza hotpockets and want to warm them before they blow up the microwave again."

"We're dressing nice for demolitions?" Lucky called after the disappearing form of Mark.

***

Fifteen minutes later, Lucky was dressed about as well as Mark could have hoped, in a striped sweater and slacks that had miraculously avoided bloodstains, burns, and unsightly gouging or slashes through the material. 'Nice' as a description may have been a stretch, but he'd managed to just barely end up 'passably average'.

He hadn't even taken more than a few steps into the portal room of the lighthouse when he sensed trouble. Lucky took one look at Caelius and froze, only moving again when the danger had passed and entered the portal instead. He began backing toward the door of the lighthouse. "So I've changed my mind, you two need no supervision with explosives or anything else. Have fun microwaving your hotpockets --"

Lucky attempted at this point to turn around and leave, only to run right into Caroline.

To adequately suit the look of the Rebellion, Caroline opted to reuse a fair number of things from the clothing she'd worn in the zombie apocalypse. The goggles atop her head, short jacket, and long fur-lined boots said 'space rebel' well enough; the Hunter coat she'd acquired after said apocalypse didn't, however, and was hanging out of the satchel that she'd carelessly shoved it into.

Had she arrived a moment sooner, there was a good chance that her reaction to the Death Lead would not have differed much from Lucky's. Instead, she found a clearly nervous Lucky that had no real reason to be, as far as she could tell.

"Told ya we don't need supervision, but you're still--" She'd looped her arm around his shoulders to pull him into the room with her, flashed a toothy smile at Mark, then stopped just through the door to glance at Lucky again. "Uh, you're still coming to blow up a Death Star. Don't know about the hot pockets--that's...okay, it's not an innuendo is it? 'Cause that's something you're still not invited for."

"Pizza hotpockets," Mark repeated, now doing a search on his hacked-phone Google to make sure he wasn't going crazy. "Wait what the heck is a Virginia hot-"

- His second cellphone suddenly buzzed rather noisily and he looked at that at the same time too. "Okay suit up, we're going in." He tossed Caroline a spare headset and a basic runic trap gun to borrow, while giving Lucky just a thumbs up.

It was freezing on the other side, a roaring snowstorm in the middle of what looked like a highway. There were no cars on the highway itself where they were standing, though a sign next to them read CITY OF DETROIT NEXT FIVE EXITS.

"Cool," Mark said over the headset, still not explaining why he asked them to dress nice. "So we're gonna blow up this highway, come and help me set up explosives all the way down it, as far as possible."

He unzipped a duffel bag and began to hand out what looked like miniature runic daggers.

Lucky stared longingly at the door from around Caroline's arm as she herded him back toward the portal.

"Ugh. No. I hope not. Listen can we just agree to never mention any of this ever again to anyone," he rambled to Caroline. He grabbed a headset as they passed them and put it on, hoping it would drown out any more innuendo discussion involving him and... them.

Mark received the least enthusiastic thumbs up back before following him into the portal.

Lucky immediately regretted his outfit as soon as they stepped through. He wrapped his scarf around his face and trudged through the snow to where Mark had dumped his duffel bag. Detroit, he reaad off the sign. Wasn't that an American city? What were they doing blowing up a freeway somewhere so.... out in the open? Maybe it was better not to ask.

Lucky turned one of the daggers over in his gloved hand - carefully. "Huh. Interesting design for explosives."

The sharp chill of the air through the portal was jarring, but it somehow only managed to energize her even more.

"HOTH," Caroline excitedly proclaimed, just before squealing with delight through her smile, ignoring the almost instantaneous ache of her teeth from the cold. She could read, of course, and was therefore not totally blind to their obvious approximate location, but none of that really fit the narrative that she was trying to force here.

After sliding her goggles down over her eyes, she moved to get right to work as instructed, unable to keep herself from grinning in spite of what was surely a detriment to her comfort. The fact that they were blowing up a highway gave her no pause, which one could assume had something to do with the sheer excellence of participating in an explosion that size.

"These the charges? New tech?" She asked, trying to speak over the wind. "Haven't seen anything like 'em yet either, definitely interesting--ooh Mark, can we both trigger the detonator?"

Lucky wasn't being uninvited from the detonation itself out of selfishness or neglect; it was truly an act of compassion, since he'd seemed so nervous about being implicated in even more explosions.

"Lucky, can you save the commentary for oh, I dunno, when we inevitably get captured and questioned because every moment you're here I risk my entire existence." Mark tried to say this all in once sentence, but it came out as three different sentences thanks to the strange and abrupt cold. "And who the heck ordered a snowstorm here, it was scheduled for light rain."

He opened his mouth to say something as Caroline commented on the new tech and then just stopped and quietly handed her a few more explosives. "Uh, you can trigger it I mean this is like my everyday job. Controlled explosives I mean."

Mark searched at the very bottom of the bag and gave Caroline what was very obviously an extremely shiny red button that could not be mistaken for design in any shape or form. "Sometimes my boss handles the explosives," he explained, "And the two button design just wasn't doing it."

The wind got surprisingly chillier, enough to nearly knock the three off the roads itself. There was a loud roar overhead, though whatever it was was highly obstructed by the snow. "s**t s**t they're coming. Put the rest anywhere and hide!"
