[☾ ✦ S ☾ ✦] Earthling Watching [☾ ✦ S ☾ ✦] [- 653 words -] [- -] He was old enough now to wander on his own, he insisted as much with his family. As always, his mother seemed keen to warn him to stay safe while his father made a big deal about the dangers of the world. His sister always wanted to tag along, but sometimes he could get out on his own. Like today.
He recalled the girl he met the other day, the one with the dark skin and light spots. He knew she was some sort of hybrid upon first sight, and she confirmed it almost immediately. A shifter mixed with a matori, water and night. Her skin was like the stars, and she stood out among everyone just like he did. Even if he wasn't a hybrid, his skin stood out too. He immediately felt drawn to her because she was just like him. Different. Unique. Startling.
He was often a wonder to those in the village where they lived. Unlike his sisters who had warmer skin, his was icy blue from the north. His hair also was blue, which made them realize he wasn't from around there. But when they saw his crystals and his eyes, they began to stare. He was a hybrid, still not quite welcome in the world they lived in. The fact he was an abnormal hybrid, one many had never seen before, caused even more headaches. Add that Tynn had made a name for herself, shadowing him in her chaos and troublemaking, and he was left feeling abnormal and different.
He felt alone outside of his family, and struggled often to make friends.
Those younglings he did play with tended to show him a good front, but would badmouth him behind his back. More than once he would be approaching from a corner and heard their words, and he could only grind his teeth into a grin and bare it. They always knew they were caught, but pretended it was nothing just as he pretended he didn't hear. However, he heard, he remembered, and he grew frustrated and angry. It was only his sister, Elna, that helped sooth his wrath. She was the balm to his anger, through her consideration and love she helped him survive in the world he felt so detached from.
Yet, the fact he saw the stary girl caused him to grow interested, and soon obsessed. He wanted to see her again, and maybe other abnormal hybrids. So he began to see the market, to wait and wonder if anything new would pass by. Occasionally he would see a fire mixed with a matori, or a leaf mixed with a wind. But nothing so abnormal like himself and the girl. He was patient, and he was dedicated, so a little failure didn't really upset him in the long run. And hey, as long as he stuck around, he might actually see Ondine again. Then he could ask her how she was so strong in the face of being so different and alone.
As he continued to watch the Leaf, Shifter, and occasional Wind earthlings wander through the market, Liio thought over his life. He knew it was pretty strange, having parents from so far away, but he was proud of it as well. He was different, but that didn't make him weak or less. It made him strong. He came from a strong line that walked both sides of life, and he knew he could learn from both sides as well. All of these normal earthlings only experienced their life, whereas he was going to experience more.
Liio grinned, and decided there was no point people watching. He would someday hunt down others like him. He would someday learn from them, learn their story, and use it to grow on his own as well.
For now, he would focus on his family, and growing physically so he could explore the world on his own.

[☾ ✦ S ☾ ✦] Ice Cold Home [☾ ✦ S ☾ ✦] [- 875 words -] [- -] Snow had been a novelty for a relatively short amount of time. It was bright, and beautiful, and looked like little crystals sparkling across the land. Crunching through the slow was satisfying, and one could even attempt to swim if they found a deep enough bank to dive into. The cool air was relaxing, and tended to still the land so it felt like time was at a standstill. Yet, as Liio lost his honeymooned glasses he began to see the truth of the lands to the north.
They were an absolute drag and tended to be more trouble than what they were worth.
He now could understand why his mother traveled south. In the south, where the winds and the grasses introduced constant motion, the world was filled with life. There were creatures everywhere, making sounds that filled the night like the sky filled with stars. Here in the north it was the cold wind that howled, and not much else. It was a lonely place, and Liio felt so left out despite being surrounded by those he seemed to match with. But then again, those who lived in the ice tended to be just as cold, and he could really tell.
In the south, the mainlanders sometimes made him feel inferior. In the north, it was clear that they saw him as lesser. It was the cold shoulder, the stares and scowls, and the harsh words that made it clear. They didn't think he belonged, at least those who were not made of the same blood as he. His grandmother did enough, but she couldn't protect him from the truth.
He wasn't at home.
It was hard for him to accept the thought. He knew that this snow covered world was partially his home. At least, it was where his mother came from. But it also was some place he had never been, and never gotten used to. He tried, sure, but it just wasn't sticking. As he walked through the town, bundled up in layers that restricted his body and heated him just as much as it chilled his fingers, Liio felt lost. So, he wandered and watched his breath fill the air, wondering if this was his place or if he needed to go somewhere else. He felt alone everywhere, at least when he wasn't with his family. But he felt so much more alone in the wind and the chill of the air.
Liio approached the market, which was much more subdued than the one back home. There weren't a mix of cultures, but mostly Ice earthlings and a handful of Wind who seemed to have settled in the north. From what he learned, they mixed often together. They were a shared tribe unlike the Leaf and Shifters he was accustomed to. They shared their government and their laws, but it seemed one side was much more keen on ruling over the other. He didn't get it, but he was happy he was half Ice. At least that allowed them to tolerate him, or so he assumed. He wasn't sure if that would be the case otherwise.
Walking to one of the many merchants, he caught sight of a ice pelt. They sold a bunch of furs in this area, but this pelt seemed smaller and thinner than the rest. He had a little coin from his parents, and had been encouraged to buy souvenirs in case they didn't return. To purchase this fur, which would keep him warm but not too warm if he were to return to Jauhar, would be a worthy investment. And so, he stood on his toes and pointed it out, nodding and paying the coin needed before wrapping it in his arms and walking away. There was no time for idle chit-chat, he simply wanted his purchase and wanted to go. Besides, the merchant seemed just as keen to push him away for the more well off buyers, who might pick up the fancy fur cloaks.
That was a bit tasteless, in his opinion. Thank goodness his sisters and mother didn't insist on such flashy items.
Wandering back, Liio really found the place disinteresting. The only redeeming thing was those new birds that were recently discovered. Birds that were claimed to be decentness from the great goddess, and ones that they could use to fly just like the Kinfa of Tale. Liio wished there were more around that he could see, he really wouldn't mind catching one of his own as well. It'd be such a rare thing to return with a great bird of the mountain. The young boy paused in his steps at the thought and quickly corrected himself.
It'd be such a rare thing to fly home on a great bird of the mountain.
Oh, to see the looks on everyone as he flew atop, proud and above them all. The boy grinned, kicking the snow a bit before adjusting his hold on his fur pelt. He'd have to try and find one before he returned home, maybe his mother or father would help him catch one. For now, he needed to get back before his nose froze. Then, he'd devise a plan to make one of those birds his own.
