Had she not been almost obsessively observant of her surroundings at all times, the girl might have been startled by the woman and her question. She neither reacted to the sound of her voice nor turned to look at her; instead, she studied the woman she'd come in with, made an educated assessment of the risk of not staying quiet, and finally redirected her attention.

"I am told that curiosity is a dangerous trait which is to be contained and focused only upon what is most worthwhile." She blinked once, face absent of expression. "Am I worthwhile, or is your curiosity unrestrained?"

The book was carefully angled to avoid any peeking before the question was answered to her satisfaction.

In answer, Clarice settled across from the girl. If she learned what the book was about, it wouldn't be from peeking. "Sounds a lot less like curiosity and more like obsession when you put it that way." The way she said obsession didn't make it sound good or bad. Maybe she knew a bit about obsession herself, the good alongside all the bad people always tut-tut over.

"I'm Clarice, the owner of this fine establishment," she holds out her hand. "Consider my curiosity unrestrained and your worth for you to decide."

A few longer moments later, and a brown-haired man who looked like he had been dragged through at least five-and-a-half coal pits sat down next to the older woman, all the seats around her already occupied by several men interested in buying her a drink. "Fine day, m'lady," there was an obligatory hat tip. "You interested in a secret or two?" He winked. Twice.

Somewhere between Bitter Creek and Blue Ridge lake, a majestic stallion grazed contentedly. A petite girl with green hair pat his neck as she tied a lead to his halter. "I'm not familiar with that particular brand, beauty, but maybe we can find your master."

Her hand paused. "Or maybe cover your brand with my own, eh? How would you like that?"

The stallion shook his black mane and steadfastly ignored her.

Unfortunately for the girl, the pure white stallion (with of course a greatly majestic black mane, save for one white streak on the forelock) was as ill-tempered as it was impatient. As she approached closer, it gave her a very specific sort of warning look, and stood its ground.

She was right to equate that definition of curiosity with obsession, something that fought to be beyond one's control. It wasn't something the girl was inclined to talk about, so she pushed the comment aside.

"I would rather not decide my own worth. I could not possibly be objective on the matter. I prefer to accept external appraisal when necessary." The woman's extended hand seemed to momentarily confuse her, before she recalled that this was a cue to return the gesture in greeting. She reached to shake her hand once, with a grip that suggested it was solely out of obligation. "My name is Milly. It is a pleasure to meet you."

The tone of her voice still implied obligation rather than any 'pleasure' in meeting her. She momentarily stalled, as though she had forgotten the next step of conversation, before recalling the subject of the book.

"It was imported from England in 1818," she began, turning the book around to display the cover. "The author is Mary Shelley. Are you familiar with her work? It is called 'Frankenstein', but the title printed here is an alternate provided by the author."

At the sight of the filthy man, the woman's smile widened and split into a cheerful laugh. This was exactly the kind of guy she'd been looking for. Always the best type to start out with - she could spot it a mile away.

"Mhmm, sure is a fine day for you, now that I'm here," she purred, leaning closer with every word she spoke. But not too close, leaving enough space to avoid hiding her cleavage from him (or the rest of the world). "I love secrets...but don't you think...maybe...I should get more than two? It's such a small number."

She pursed her lips into a pout and delicately placed her hand against his shoulder.

"Can't tempt you with some apples, can I?" She holds one out like a trophy, and wiggles it enticingly.

Good thing she has a whole sack of them.

There was enough of a commotion already in motion thanks to the side-and-sideways-saddle rider that an opportunistic shadow slipped into the saloon right behind him. There was very little remarkable about said shadow - black hat, dusty black bandana across their face, and a tattoo of a circular serpent on the hand that pulled the brim a little lower.

And in his other hand, a wanted poster whose poorly-drawn mugshot bore a very unfortunate resemblance to Mark.

He twitched, obviously not used to any sort of contact whatsoever. There was some intense nervous lip licking, which just ended up making his mouth look extraordinarily pink against the soot grey.

"L-like how many extra secrets?" The last syllable ended up extremely high pitched. "I mean - I got at least ten, but I also got a real big secret. Women, money, treasure. Even the old settlers here had no clue, and I'll share it to you for the small price of securing us a ride out."

Unfortunately horses did not understand any form of English, no matter how polite the words were, and after a little more intimidating posturing it simply wandered off, half a saddle still dragging behind it. In short, the answer was probably no.

"Eh, leave him," said a voice from behind, a red-haired man with a single earring on one ear. He was well dressed, and well-traveled. "He'll come back eventually. You can't win them all."

He was frowning a bit, but upon seeing the newcomer, gave a gentle smile."I'm the town sheriff by the way, you can call me Ben. Fancy a ride, little lady to your destination of choice?"

"Ohh..." As she drew out the word in 'thought', she trailed her hand a little lower. "How about nine in all? Mmm, that's a good number. Best number there is. But the women and the money and the treasure's got to be part of it. I want all that. I'll make it worth your while, and you'll get any kind of ride you need from me. Personally."

Not sure that he could take the hint, she dropped her hand to his thigh and gave it a gentle squeeze.

Theoretically, Mark was standing there, however, the in person suspect lacked any defining facial features other than lips, thanks to being entirely covered in about two weeks worth of dirt and grime.

Before the newcomer could seek out this theoretical "Mark", another hand grabbed his hand. It was a slender hand, a woman's, and it also had the same circular tattoo.

"Hello," said the woman, and while her voice gave it away, she looked almost young enough to be just a lass, dressed layers of fancy pink and white, long blonde curls nearly touching her knees. "Can I interest you in a night for two?"

He nearly jumped out of his seat, and skin, chair scraping loudly against the boarded floor. "I'm-I'm Mark-" he suddenly exclaimed, continuing in the same high-pitched tone, "And it's short for Marksman, because I'm the best shot around." He wasn't actually wearing a holster for any gun.

At this point most of the others offering drinks had wandered off a little disgruntled, others to speak to each other in comforting patterns of speech. Taking this as an opportunity, Mark scooted a little closer. "Right secrets, nine secrets. Okay here's nine: that guy over there has only one eye and is the worst shot around, that woman over there slept with the bartender last night, that guy sitting next to her was shot in the leg once, the guy outside never pays his tab, that lady talking to the other lass, Clarice, she's got a mean temper that one if you upset her, I've never seen that guy in the corner before, and I lost a horse once."

He counted his fingers just to make sure. "Right so the big one. First we gotta procure rides, at least two, one for each of us. It'll be a big trek, and we'll need an extra to help, anyone will do."

The was briefly the sound of gunfire outside, but it didn't seem to affect Mark at all.

"We'll need it make it past Adder territory, if we can do that, then we're golden. Then we'll split it, half-half. You bring the provisions upfront though, and well after that," he trailed off, doing that weird double wink thing again.

If only robot horses could understand english, though. They certainly had the computing power for it. The girl dejectedly tossed the apple in a slow arc, landing a couple of feet ahead of the horse. Even if the horse didn't eat it, maybe it would step on it and splatter.

A less interesting version of the youtube series of objects versing a hydraulic press, for sure.

"You can certainly at least try to win them all," the girl groused. "I'm not sure where to go, actually. D'you know anywhere with a good drink? And nicer horses?"

She offered a weak smile. "Call me Tria."

He offered Tria a hand up to the saddle. "Well, you're definitely new around here. The only people who come to this part of town are vagrants or no-goods and you don't seem like either. Lady lucks' on your side though, Bitter Creek is just a ride straight down this way, the townsfolk are mostly good, clean people and we can at least get you a nice place to stay. You'll fit-"

- And that was about as much warning as she got as his left eyesocket burst almost comically red, and he fell backwards from the horse, unmoving. An arrow was permanently lodged where his eye should have been.

They were strange, masked men, covered entirely in white snake tattoos against their tanned skin. The masks seemed to depict twisted illustrations of different animals. They wasted no time in grabbing the deceased's body, immediately carving it into separate pieces, taking off the masks to reveal individually sharpened teeth underneath.

Tria had to option to stay and watch, or to take the horse and leave.
