Jordan put his potato into the bucket and picked up another one. He gave Melvin a quick glance, debated with himself a moment, then asked casually, "Something happen?"
"Thank you," he said, a little warmed by the gesture. "I'll try and be better about it myself. Don't want to get into bad habits."

He slowly worked on his peel, trying slowly and gradually to make it just one piece of skin before it broke too early.
"Poetic justice I guess. I messed with Lawr when he was with Horace thinking nothing serious was there. Even though I knew nothing was serious there between us now, same thing happened to me. Even if you think you are prepared for the worse, that you know it can happen, doesn't change how surprised you are about what you shouldn't feel."
He reached for a potato and carved right into the center. "Don't know what I was thinking." He whispered to himself.

"Ah," Jordan said, as neutrally as he could, and "Sorry that happened to you," and kept did you really think a cheater wasn't going to cheat again? back, because he'd already said as much some time ago, and Melvin was already kicking himself over it, so there really wasn't any point in picking at it. There had always been a faint awkwardness about more personal things between them, and I told you so wasn't something anyone wanted to hear, even in a stable, solid friendship.
You were thinking you were special and he was going to change for you. "Here, hand me that one, would you," he said aloud, pointing his peeler at a particularly large potato.

"No. Everyone knew better. I knew better. No point in that now."
He reached over and handed him the potato.
"So....that's what happened." And it wasn't the first time something like this reminded Melvin of his sense of disappointment and sullen compromise for Lawr.
"Maybe I should look for a place too."

It explained the direction of the conversation, anyway, and explained why Melvin was looking to mend relationships now; he'd lost the emotional support he'd pushed other people away to keep. Jordan nodded thanks and started in on the fresh potato. There was a little edge of vindictive satisfaction in having been proved right, but it was mostly drowned out by the subdued, deflated mood Melvin was in. Jordan didn't like Lawr at all, but he could still feel sympathy for what Melvin felt over the whole thing.
"Did you keep your room in the dorms?" he asked.

He shook his head "One of the many things I let go for what I thought was for something better."
He finished peeling the gouged potato and tossed it in. "I guess I can find a new one."

"It's not too hard to get a different room if you need one. As long as there's one open, nobody minds if you move. But if you need a place to crash, I got a couch," Jordan said, working on the large potato.

"Well.....I do kinda still have a room." It was just in HIS house.
"I mean for now it's a place." So he didn't HAVE to rush.

"Okay. Just saying," Jordan said, giving Melvin a sympathetic look. When he'd left, he'd badly needed someplace to go, and having a friend to help out with that had meant a lot. Melvin didn't have a lot of options left on that front, and Jordan didn't think the guy would be a bad guest if he chose to take him up on the offer, general awkwardness notwithstanding.
