The purpleblood stiffened, his shoulders heightening at the question. Of course he'd been to the city before, how else would he know that he hated it so much if he hadn't? You couldn't hold such a loathing as this for something if you hadn't at least been through it once. She didn't need to know why he hated this place so much and he really didn't owe her any sort of answer, but since she was leading him around and being congenial, he dipped his head and offered a nod.

"I have, and I know I dislike being here based on experience alone." He said, squinting at a commotion the distance. "I can't tell if the people here fight because they actually have problems to work out or if they fight because they have fists and feet at their disposal."

He grabbed his cloak and held it to himself for a moment before letting out a sigh.

"Of course I'm not! I live in the woods, where things are reigned by the laws of nature and not by the idiots currently racing around us." He grunted, shaking his head. "I don't like coming here, but I happen to need groceries and have a lusus to feed. It's a journey I don't prefer, but I must undertake."

He paused, dropping his cloak and pursing his lips.

"Though, I suppose I should be asking you a similar question. Not to say that you don't belong here, but how have you survived this long out here?" He asked, immediately regretting his choice of words. "The government presence here is obscene. You've got to be worried for your life just going out to buy shoes or something menial every day, right?"

"Oh gosh! That's an interesting characterization of the city, for sure!" It was unlikely that he'd tasted those fists and feet himself, being a purpleblood, but it was not... inaccurate. It was also not all pugilism and pain, just as Four Fronds was probably not all highbloods relaxing by a lake (or... in the woods?). "Surely they have grocery stores in Four Fronds proper, though!" she said, surprised, "And New Hemisect, too. Is our selection really that good?"

What had happened to him to give him such a skewed perspective on her fair city? Surely Bloodfest hadn't been that bad! Perhaps tonight she would find an opening to find out, but walking around wasn't conducive to that. Yet.

Ah, but he was asking her such a fascinating question! It was rare to find a highblood that understood those challenges. It was very aware of him to ask. Alarmingly aware. Perhaps - she watched him with intense and hungry interest - deviantly aware? No, it was a reasonable question. She would see how he felt about her answer.

"Oh gosh, luck, wit, strength, and my lusus." And lots of friends! "It really depends on the night, and what's going on in the world..." she said, the roaches chittering her in reproach for bragging.

It was one thing, Ma'am insisted, to 'sell yourself' in an interview and to showcase your accomplishments. But one must be modest and pleasant, as that is how a redblood succeeds. Psykgi more or less ignored her. "I get by." she said cheerily. She wasn't really one to complain!

But he did give her something interesting to sink her tusks into... "Does the government worry you? I can't imagine they have too many outposts in the deeper woods... or in the resort, really, aside from keeping the peace!"

Rastin paused, his brows contorting oddly. Were there shops in Four Fronds? He'd lived there all his life and, embarrassingly enough, he'd never entertained that thought before. Surely his lusus would have redirected him to a more convenient place when he was younger if there had been the option to do so. He mulled it over a bit longer and turned back to her.

Luck, wit, strength, and her Lusus, huh? He nodded slowly, almost knowingly, to himself. Of course, just like him, in certain ways. Without the help of CatDad to support him, he wouldn't be here either, and having your wits about yourself was always a good thing. The sentiment pleased him, in a subtle way.

"I see, I suppose as long as you're getting by, everything is alright." He replied, clasping his hands in front of himself. "I feel I should... Er, compliment you on how well you've managed to survive here. I could never live here. I would grow pale and lithe, or drop dead from the noise."

The words slid out awkwardly and left him slightly anxious. But, still, offering them felt right and somewhat good. Was this how it felt to have a non-confrontational conversation? He squinted.

"Wh-The government?" He stammered, the question sending his nerves upward again. ... His first instinct was to be completely honest and say, yes, he was worried. He didn't appreciate the idea of how violent things could be. He didn't like how the government conducted itself and how it used it's power to harm innocent people, espescially low-bloods. Furthermore, he couldn't say he was proud to be the blood color he was, solely because so many trolls in his part of the spectrum were pandered to and put on pedestals!

The purpleblood bit his tongue and clenched his jaw. It burned him, really, it did, and he wanted to look to Psykgi and say exactly what he thought. ... But he wasn't ready, and the government could be anywhere and anything in this city. He swallowed his pride and gritted his teeth.

"No." He hissed, his tone giving way to his lie as he leaned forward and looked around. "... Unless you mean, of course, here. I am currently, very very worried about the government presence here, in this city. Could we kindly drop the subject and move toward... Where ever it is you're taking me now?"

"Thank you!" She said. That was interesting - getting a compliment for surviving. Was this pity or just a general goodwill towards the lower castes? Was it to an aberrant degree? Inquiring minds needed to know!
"Gosh, you know, that's something that people really should complement other trolls on more often." she mused out loud. It made sense, after all - Alternia was harsh, and you had to be strong and smart and lucky to survive it. Congratulations should be in order, just generally.

She paused to check the street signs and make sure she was still heading in the right direction. She was. More interesting was Rastin's reaction to her question. A purpleblood worried about the government had something very interesting to hide. Or, something very interesting going on in his head. Or both. She wanted to press him, to ask him more about his apparent fear of the government and his phobia of civilization, but it was probably best to do so out of civilization itself.

"Oh gosh, I forgot to tell you?" she said, moving a strand of hair out of her face, "How silly of me!" she giggled, "There's a spice shop - we're almost there - and I hear they have a really wide selection of good quality organic top-selected spices... And see, there it is!"

And there it was. A few blocks away squatted a spice shop shaped like a fungus for whatever artistic reason. It glowed with a warm light in the streetlit, slightly wet night, and as they came closer Psykgi could see that it clearly displayed - artfully - a wide range of spices. They were arranged both in their whole and ground up forms, situated in gleaming glazed pottery bowls against a flowing, luxurious backdrop of fine cloth. It was definitely a spice shop.

And there, on the door, written in neat fountain-pen penmanship in indigo ink, was an equally clear sign:

"No Lowbloods Served"

Inquiring minds had every right to know, but Rastin wouldn't say anything further. His compliments, like his insults and the majority of the words he spoke, were always genuine and fueled by the active desire to say them. His feeling were his own, even if they were haphazardly and begrudgingly handled by the teenager who felt them. He rubbed the back of his head.

"I agree. We could all benefit from being more positive to one another." He replied, a subtle hue of purple dusting his cheeks. "... However, I don't see people changing how they treat each other without some kind of drastic change, and I don't want to be a part of something like that."

The hair on the back of his neck pricked on end. He could sense that she was growing more curious and, with every fiber of his being, he prayed that she wouldn't ask him anything further. This wasn't a safe place to talk about whys and whos, or discuss anything at all. He wanted to keep his head attached to his body for as long as possible.

"Oh, that sounds pleasant." He said, his expression softening and flexing as Psykgi pointed the shop out. It certainly looked and smelled like a spice shop from this position on the street, but something about it seemed odd. He paused, his eyes glancing to and fro for a reason why, and happened to linger upon the door sign just long enough to read it.

Then, his attention darted to Psykgi.

"There is no possible way that we could go into this shop together." He quipped, shaking his head. "I'm sorry that you've taken me all this way and been so kind as to point it out to me, but if you would like to go shopping with me, I would much rather go somewhere where we would both be safe."

That wasn't exactly what he meant, but he wasn't wrong.

"Not necessarily!" she said, "It's not like they'd be serving me, I'd just be walking in with you. No harm done." to either of them. "And I'd get to see just how good they are..."

He was startlingly reluctant, though. It wasn't as though she had much at stake here, she could find out about this establishment at a different time, with a different person. If he wasn't going to test it out for her...

"Or... gosh, is it that time of night? Theres several lovely teahouses along the way. We could have lunch, if you haven't had it already, and see if they sell stock."

... She could at least sit him down and begin to observe her specimen.

No harm done his black-wearing-gray-purpleblood behind. He was not going to deal with some hemo-racist shop clerk following them around the entire time or, hell to be more to the point, dealing with anywhere that was hemo-biased to begin with. It burned a small, angry space in his chest that she, even if he couldn't be entirely certain that it was her intention by showing him this shop, would assume that he'd want to be brought to a store that only catered to the higher castes. He bit the inside of his lip and, once again, shook his head.

"Lunch does sound nice, but perhaps we could find something on the way to the spice shop I usually go to?" He said, his expression stern, but not in any way cruel or angry. "And, while I understand that you might like to see how good they are, I can assure you that you can find exactly what they have elsewhere in a more accepting shop. After all, just because it's wrapped in luxury, does not mean it's contents are any different than if it were contained in cheap plastic or newspaper."

His cloak swayed behind him as he walked back to the main street and flowed to a stop as he paused, again, to speak.

"And, if you're inclined to know, I prefer the places that put true effort into what they do and show dedication to their craft." He added, giving a glance to the shop beside them. "Not places that tote themselves about as fancy and upscale without having to lift more than a finger's worth of effort."

Did he really think that she didn't know that? Maybe he did. Psykgi didn't particularly feel like disabusing him of the notion. Again, investigating the truth of their advertising would be for another time.

"The two don't have to be completely exclusive." she said, moving on with a carefree shrug, "Anyway, though..." she gestured to the remains of his spice parcel, and the symbol on it, "If that's where you usually go, then there is definitely a teahouse on the way!"

Eventually, indeed, such a place indeed resolved itself. It was a bamboo paneled place with a modest view of the streets and the boardwalk. It smelled of herbs, steam, and food. And - perhaps more telling - there were lower bloods there. No redbloods as far as she could see - yellow was the lowest caste she could see through the window - but that was hardly surprising and didn't particularly matter to her.

"Lets eat here."

Rastin mentally shrugged off her following comment and held his hand in from of himself as he moved forward. It was best to move on from the subject, before he allowed himself to delve too far into his beliefs and grievances about the society he was thrust into. If anything could be said further, however, it seemed to him like a case of him not wanting anything to do with the high status that he'd been born into and her on the opposite side of the spectrum being curious as to what she could be being kept from. Both of them, in his opinion, seemed better off not trying to be curious about anything at all and just sticking to themselves. It was always safer along that path.

"Hm? ... I've never noticed this place before." He mused, his lips giving a slight pucker as he surveyed the establishment. "It looks decent and open... I don't see why we shouldn't."

He moved toward the door and took an extra look for any indication that it could be trouble, and slowly nodded.

"Yes, we'll eat here, and then move right along." He said, more so to keep track of his goal than anything else, and held the door open for Psykgi. "After you."

Entering was easy enough. They were led to a quaint, clean little table, and presented with a dizzying array of teas on a menu. "Oooh!" Psykgi said, sorting through the list of blends, including the outright bizzare ones with references to military weaponry and bodily injury. It was trying to stand out. "Look at this ginger-lemon one! It has notes of clove, too and some other spices... doesn't that sound delightfully spicy?"

Rastin found himself staring bullets into the menu. W-what kind of place was this? Tea wasn't something that should be associated with violence and weaponry! It was a peaceful, restful thing, not a tool for war. He shook his head and fought the urge to grumble.

"Hrm... I'm actually looking more into this... Mint chamomile variety." He said, tapping the menu idly with his finger. "I feel the need to calm down after all of this activity, lest my blood pressure rise any higher. However, if you would like to get two separate pots, I don't see any reason against it."

His eyes wandered down to the food section of the menu and mulled over the selections there.

"What do you think would be good for food?" He asked. "I don't know much about city eating. I rarely come out here for more than a quick shopping trip, so I've never really stopped to eat anywhere out here..."

"That sounds delicious!" Psykgi said. Chamomile and mint! "I'll try it next time. But we'll get two pots, and maybe we can have a taste - there are just so many options!"

But on to the less interesting options. "Sandwiches are always nice." Psy said, nodding at the menu, "Pastries... Scones are always delicious. Dumplings are great, too - they fry them up and season them and they are so good."

She continued to scroll down the menu. "... or, gosh, really anything on here." She made her own selection - a salad with fruit that she could share with her lusus - and eyed Rastin with amused interest. "What do people eat outside of the city, then?"

Rastin nodded. He wouldn't say he liked the idea of ginger and lemon together, as both were strong sour and spicy flavors, but it couldn't hurt to give a new tea a try. After all, the more variety he had, the more options he could buy and the more tea he could drink. The idea pleased him.

"A sandwich sounds alright, but I'm not up for something big." He replied, making a slight face. He really ate like a bird, so anything too big would have him waddling home like he'd been gut-punched. He didn't want to have that. "Oh, but dumplings... I haven't had those in ages, I keep forgetting I've got the recipe for them. Why don't we order a set of those to share?"

His lips puckered at her question. She had such a look about her. It was slightly off-putting.

"Well, I can't speak for everyone, but I can answer for what I eat." He sighed, placing his menu aside and adjusting his position. "I make my meals at home, usually from my own garden and from things I buy from shopping trips. I rarely eat out, and if I happen to, I prefer cafes and quiet spaces."

He paused, looking toward the street, and arched a brow at her.

"How about you? What do you like to eat and where do you typically go when you're out and about?" He asked.

"Sure." sharing was fine with her. If she had too much, Ma'am could always take care of it, or she could bring it home with her, and all of her other shopping. And all the new fantastic and juicy informational tidbits about this purpleblood.

A very productive day.

"Sounds mostly vegetarian." she commented, "And also a lot of work. Gosh, you must be so hard working... are you?"

"Well, normally I eat fruit - it's nice, portable, and it keeps so nicely! And, if it doesn't keep, my Ma is always happy to take care of it for me." Or, sometimes, she ate it if it was just a little ripe, but not everyone understood how very sweet slightly overdone fruit could be. It was probably an aquired, cockroach-child taste.

"And occasionally some of those readymade meals? The sort you put into the radiation-heat box and POOF, a delicous meal?" she made a 'poofing' hand gesture and giggled, "... But when I eat out, I like to explore. And, often, I've been invited somewhere, so theres really no usual for that!"

It was now Rastin's turn to make to make an amused face, even if it were only slight. Vegetarian? No necessarily. He still bought meat and did a fair bit of side trading for things he thought might be good to try. Sure, he spent most of his time and life digging and planting, but that didn't mean he didn't have tastes in other things. He clasped his hands.

"I like to think that I am. I do garden most of the time." He said, nodding. "With that kind of work you've got all sorts of lifting and bending you need to do. Not to mention dirt. It's certainly taxing and not for trolls who prefer lazing about."

He almost smiled when she spoke about fruit, only almost, and acknowledged her lusus. He could imagine that having a lusus like that had to be useful when it came to leftovers. But, then again, CatDad was known for wolfing down everything and anything if it came rolling toward his mouth. Was this a trait all lusii possessed? Perhaps. He let the thought linger a bit.

"What are readymade meals?" He asked, his pensive expression turning into that of mild disgust and confusion. That sounded a bit odd to him. "And as for invitiations... I've never been the sort to accept those. Not at least until now, because I'm older. As a child, I never would have gone out for a casual dinner with anyone I don't think..."
