Class Choice

For the longest time he thought he wanted to do exactly what his sister did. They were twins after all so why wouldn't he like what she liked? Do what she did? But after training with Shura for a few weeks, and being exhausted beyond belief, Dovian wasn't so sure he wanted to be a fighter. Not in the same sense that his sister did. he skill would be nice to know but he didn't see himself taking it farther than a skill to have handy in case things got bad.

He thought at first that his sister would be upset that he didn't want to do the same thing, but the more he thought about it the more he realized she would likely be relieved. It meant that she wouldn't have to slow her workouts for him and that she wouldn't need to worry so much about his getting hurt. Not like their first time trying to train. Of course that had mostly been his fault since he had stepped in front of his sibling's fist. Dovian knew he likely would have done the same thing if he were able to do it all over again. It worried him that Shura might not stop hitting the girl if she had started.

Now he sat in his room making something once more. He'd become quite good at making things lately. When he had free time he usually stayed inside so that he could tinker around with different materials. Dovian had asked his dad for some cheap stuff so that he could practice on it. So far he was good at making thin gloves and arm bracers. He could even sew in some designs. Nothing too fancy though. His skills for that hadn't improved that much. Dovian was working on it though. He wanted to be able to sew a fancy design into a pair of gloves for his sister eventually.

He might even see about making things for his mom to wear. He noticed that she had changed her outfit recently. Or really her shoes. Normally she wore boots everywhere but now she was wearing something a bit more... girly.

And that was when it dawned on him. Instead of trying to become a brawler like his sister, he could he a weapon maker. Or a tailor. What was the right word for something like that? A blacksmith!

The boy smiled to himself as he thought about the whole thing. Being a blacksmith would mean that he would get to make weapons and armor all the time for people. It would also give him the skills to work metals and leathers. He could just picture making a set of gauntlets out of tough leather for his sister. He could brand the leather and sew it with a large needle so that they really stood out. Dovian would also be able to make a trident for his mother that would really tell the story of who she was. Etching couldn't be too hard could it? Maybe he would have to give it a try at some point. Did he have the right tools though? Not likely.

"I'll have to ask dad about getting some tools." Dovian looked to the materials he had at his side and then grinned. There was no blacksmith in the small village that they lived in but he could ask to be sent to one so that he could learn. Of course that meant that he would have to be away from his family. If his sister would allow it. A chuckle left him. Dovian suspected that he may need to take Shura with him or have the blacksmith come to him. Neither option bothered him. In truth he enjoyed having his sister around. He always had someone to talk to and look out for him.

Giving his full attention back to his task he wondered if he might be able to make the design that was sewn into them a bit more fancy. If he could then he could use that as an example of his skills and hopefully impress his potential mentor. It would mean a lot to him to get the best teacher but he would be willing to settle for learning the basics from a run of the mill blacksmith. After all, he would need to start somewhere. It wasn't like what his sister needed. He didn't have to worry about correcting his stance or follow through once learned a certain way. All he wanted to learn was how to work leather and melt the metals needed to create things. If he could figure that out then he would be doing good.

Since he would eventually be working with metals then he would need to keep up his training so that he could build up the muscle he would need. Dovian didn't imagine that working metals would be easy and having the extra muscle to get it to do what he wanted would be useful. So that meant that he would have to ask his sister to work with him more on the muscle end of training rather than the endurance side. He appreciated being able to outrun the gaggle of giggling girls but he'd appreciate the muscle to do his job more. "Won't Shuu just love that." He laughed to himself. His poor sister would have to slow her physical workouts more than her running to help him out.

Thinking About What Mom Said
Prentice

Recently there had been a gathering that everyone had gone to, even he and his sister, but at the time he hadn't paid much attention to it. Or even what it was for. It wasn't until they had returned home that he'd noticed the way his mother seemed to be frantic in making sure she knew where both he and his twin sister were almost at all times. They always had to have one of the family beasts with them or weren't allowed to go too far from home in general. Not that he had any desire to go that far. So when he'd asked about the odd behavior he got an answer that had concerned him.

At the gathering there had been a commotion, one that had caused people to become restless and uneasy but he'd not been able to see it or even tell what it was. Dovian learned that it had been a creature that was known simply as the Dretch. His mother said that they were a strange bug-like mage. Of course he had mentioned that the Alkidike's were supposed to be bug-like and wondered if it had been them. (Yes, Dovian was naive.) The reaction his mother had to that confused him even farther. Mostly because she had pressed her lips together and had paused long enough like she was remembering something or choosing her words wisely. It had made the young man that much more curious as well. But when she shook her head his mother had told him that the Dretch were something different altogether.

What he had gathered from the conversation then was that they were something that everyone feared. Even the mighty Alks. Even his mother and father. So now he had to wonder if there was a reason the weird bug-like mages were stealing people. Were they lonely? Did they need them for something? Or was the answer something more sinister?

A shiver ran it's course through him and he paled a little. What if one of the Dretch wanted to take him or his sister? What if they took off with one of his parents? It was certainly enough to make him want to stay home and know where everyone in the family were. That feeling made him understand his mother's odd behavior. Not that he could blame her after hearing her reasons and having time to think about it all.

Laying back on his bed he stared up at the ceiling of his room. Dovian started to wonder if there was a weapon that could be made to take on the Dretch and win. Obviously there had to be he just wasn't sure what it would be. Could he make it? Sure. When he had the skill level to do so, which wasn't right now. Would a bow be better matched against them? He found that he now wanted to know more about the odd creatures that inspired all of Tendaji to be fearful. Not because they fascinated him but because he wanted to make sure he could make something that could kill them. If he could then he could arm his family with such weapons and feel better about their safety. His mother might even feel better after having something like that. He knew his sister wouldn't care if the weapon could take them on or not, she likely would try to beat the Dretch into submission. Not that the idea wasn't entertaining but it did worry him. Should he make something for Shura to wear that could help her in fending the bug-like mages off? Spiked gloves maybe? Or did he need to look into etching runes into them to give them magic as well?

One thing was for sure, he definitely had questions for his teacher.

Class Quest
Prentice

(( This is a personal growth that shows Dovian has gained a bit more confidence and backbone in dealing with personal issues so that he no longer needs to rely on his twin sister to save him from uncomfortable situations.))

Since he had decided to work on making weapons and armor rather than wearing or using them he had found himself a nice place to work outside in the sunlight. A flat rock served as his table and another, more rounded one was his seat. Dovian had been using the nice quiet place for little over a week so it wasn't a secret that he was there when he wasn't training with Shura. A fact that he wished were the opposite since he sometimes had to deal with the village girls staring at him as he worked. Sometimes it was one or two of them and other times it was a whole group that had joined together to watch him tinker with different materials. What was their deal?

In all honesty Dovian didn't understand their infatuation with him. He was Oban. Well, half Leaf too but for the most part he looked Oban. Just like they did. Shouldn't his twin get more attention than him? After all she was the light skinned one and seemed to be exotic in the desert, just like their mother. Wouldn't it make more sense for the village girls to envy her and want to be just like her? Shouldn't they be clamoring to be her friend?

As he worked with a peice of leather he noticed that another girl was approaching him as many others had before. At first he assumed she was going to sit and stare for hours like the others and that coaxed a sigh out of him. Apart from being rude he wasn't sure how to get them to leave him alone. But this girl did something that the others hadn't, she actually came closer and stood practically right beside him. Dovian blinked a few times before she looked up at her with a bit of confusion.

"D-did you need something?" He asked curiously.

In truth he was a little worried that the girl might need something or need help in general. Dovian wasn't the type to ignore helping others. If he knew someone could use the extra hand then he would often give it, unless it was something he couldn't do. However, the girl smiled, giggled, and shook her head at him.

"No. I was just wondering if I could be your girlfriend."

The sentence was enough to cause the hybrid boy to drop what was in his hands and freeze in place. Dovian looked around almost instantly, subconsciously looking for his twin, but when he noticed that they were the only two around he cleared his throat.

"I'm... I'm sorry...?" Maybe he hadn't heard right. Maybe she had said something similar to what he thought he heard. Though Dovian couldn't think of anything that would sound the same.

"Can I be your girlfriend?" This time the girl reached her hand out and took his.

Dovian felt a grimace reach his features before he took his hand back gently. He hoped that she had missed his look so that he wouldn't feel bad for the involuntary reaction to her words. The boy was never really harsh. Slowly he shook his head and looked down at his own lap. He was trying to find a way to let the girl down gently but when she grabbed his hand again he pulled away more firmly.

"Please don't." He said in a calm voice.

"Oh Dovi, don't be that way." The girl seemed to chime.

That was what cemented his decision and he got up from his place on the round rock. Once he was standing upright he squared his shoulders and looked the girl in the eye. "My name is Dovian. Only my sister can call me Dovi." He needed to grow a backbone for situations like this. Shura was nowhere to be found so he had to make sure that he expressed his wishes properly.

"I'm sorry but I don't like you that way." He took a deep breath before he continued. "I don't really like you at all really. Ever since we were little you and the other girls have always bothered me even though I didn't like it." Dovian thought he was perhaps being a little too mean but it needed to be said. If it wasn't then they would simply continue to bother him. "I am trying to work on a new pair of gauntlets for my sister and I would like to be left alone so that I can get the details just right."

The girl blinked as though she had been slapped and it made Dovian feel guilty but he wasn't going to take the words back. He couldn't. The boy knew he had to stand his ground. It was obvious that his twin wouldn't always be there to speak up for him and keep unwanted attention away from him.

The village girl looked like she was starting to get tears in her eyes and Dovi had to turn his head away from her. He was a sucker for tears. When he noticed that her bottom lip started to quiver he closed his eyes and brought one hand to his face to rub at his jaw.

"I'm sorry, I know that was harsh but I really am busy." And in truth Dovian wasn't sure if he had time for a girlfriend; let alone if he wanted one.

He peeked his green eyes open and tried to see how well the girl was taking his "harsh" side. Once he noticed that she was relatively unchanged from when he'd originally closed his eyes he sighed and turned to gather his things from the flat rock that he had been using as a work table. With everything in hand Dovian turned to look at her again for just a moment then spoke again. "I do not want a girlfriend so please tell your friends to leave me be." His head gave a single firm nod and then he moved around the girl so that he could head home. He didn't think there was a point in him sticking around as his mind wasn't going to be changed.
