Mental illnesses do really exist, but they can often be misdiagnosed. That doesn't necessarily mean they're nonexistent. People have been misdiagnosed with physical disorders, but that doesn't mean the physical disorders don't exist.
Aspergers and ADHD are particularly prone to misdiagnosis, as it's difficult to tell what's a child being awkward and hyper and what is an actual lifelong disorder. But brain scans have proven that chemical levels in the brain are noticeably different for people with various disorders.
Aspergers and ADHD are also both high-functioning disorders, meaning they can be overcome fairly well compared to more severe disorders.
