"I don't mean what you can necessarily do on both sides, Shun, but what you can do here specifically. The abilities we have on both sides are unique to each of us but magic is everything else." His hand was held up and the fire went blue and froze. No longer was it fire, it was ice and it spakled and shifted in the air as if ht was living flame.. "You can control it if you're strong enough but you can't doubt." Glowing eyes looked him Shun over, an eyebrow raising briefly. "I am a Noble of the Court, Shun, so when I say your side I mean Ashdown." Which was to say that he had a place at Court and that he carried more of other ashdown with him than he had ever done so before. "Our side remains the same, to combat the Enemy and see this all end. It's gone on long enough now." He paused a moment, nodding briefly in agreement. "Correct, while I can offer you guidance and training, I cannot give you purpose." His eyes glinted. "That's not on the table for you because, as you said, the only person who can save you is yourself."

"I know that. Just... so far I have not managed to do much more than what I stated. I managed to create a light with Heliodora's guidance, and I managed to nudge some shadows once. Beyond that, the most I have done is push my physical capabilities to scale things and leap greater lengths that I would not have been able to do otherwise, regardless of my innate abilities."And he sort of accidentally vandalized a trashcan with a pocket knife once. He was aware he should be capable of much more, and the little display of fire to ice was just an example laid out before him. Shun relaxed a little when Jeremiah clarified what he meant by the sides. There was still something there that bothered him, but he couldn't place his finger on it. Not now anyway. "That is... good to hear. I do not wish to make an enemy of you," he stated, looking up at the Chief, "Though if magic ends up prevading more in regular Ashdown soon, we all need to take more caution. And I am not just talking about the dangers of Other Ashdown. A new poster appeared in the theater. It depicted a burning stake by a rainy town."Drawing in a deep breath, the sergeant slowly nodded. Yes, he was more than aware that only he could do something about his lack of purpose. It wouldn't do for him to try and rely on anyone else for that matter. He needed to figure that out on his own, one way or another. "Very well... I am willing to learn. Whatever it may take. That is... if you do not think that I may be a lost cause. I do not wish for you to waste your time in the end."1894

"Which are things you've changed about yourself but not actually outside yourself. It's a place to start then." The gears were already turning in Jeremiah's mind, thinking of what Shun could be pushed to trying and working outside of the box. His lips twitched a bit at the mention of shadows. "Shadows like attention and play, from what I understand. As long as you're interesting they'll likely listen." Was Gloom teaching more people about shadows like he had Algie? Who knew. "We're not enemies, Shun, I've no desire to be. As for magic changing? It can happen when Heliodora dies." He said when, not if. Jeremiah expected it. "Those posters could just as easily be things that have happened instead of what's to come, you realize. Witch trials are a thing of the past, not the future." So far as he thought, in any case, but he wouldn't put it past anyone with the changes in town. Jeremiah inclined his head slightly towards Shun. "If I thought you were a lost cause I wouldn't be offering. It's not a waste of time and I should have done it sooner." He finally sighed. "You are no more a lost cause than I am." Shun nodded, "That is a way of putting it, yes. I know the steps... it just a matter of getting all the details down so that I can actually perform them."His head tilted at the tidbit about shadows. It made sense, considering what Gloom was. He was hardly the playful type, but perhaps he could keep the shadows' interests in his own way. The detective also noticed the fact that Jeremiah said 'when' and not 'if' Heliodora dies. Then again, with the way things were going, and the general agreement that the cage must fall, it was very likely the girl would perish sometime. The implications of what might happen once the cage was destroyed worried him. "I hope you are right about that."Jeremiah seemed to have more faith in him than he did in himself. He didn't consider the other man to be a lost cause in the slightest. No, he was the complete opposite as far as he was concerned. A part of him worried that in due time, his views would reflect what the fetch had said. "...Very well. Where do we begin?"2082

"There are other ways, Shun, than what I originally spoke of. They just ... require more of you and you're likely better suited to them as I was." Jeremiah shifted, his stance changing. No longer relaxed and he was holding cold fire in his hand once more. Apparently he did have faith in Shun. What he had to do was make sure that Shun had faith in himself. "To start?" A smile appeared on Jeremiah's face, his eyes glowing brightly. It was rakish and troublesome. "You either learn to block or you get really good at dodging." The ball of cold fire was bounced lightly between his hands. "Only one of these the end goal, the other is an acceptable bonus." It would definitely be coming his direction soon. final word count: 1443

Shun saw the shift in Jeremiah's stance, and he was moving a bit as well to ready himself. It was a loose one to start with, as he wasn't completely sure what was to come next, but he didn't want to be caught flatfooted here. His eyes narrowed, wary of the look Mercer was giving him now. "I can dodge."His reflexes had improved notably recently. Watching the Chief of Police carefully, he kept himself relatively loose, not wanting to lock himself up by being too tense. Once the orb of cold flames came hurling at him, he shifted to the side easily, and the ball sailed past. The detective was about to ask if that was just a warmup toss, but he soon felt a blast of cold hitting him square in the back. It didn't hurt, but he jerked forward from sheer surprise. He glanced behind, then quickly turned back to Mercer. This was going to be an experience. 2243
