The soft glow that grew across his companion's cheeks and spread to his ears did not go unnoticed. Of course, he wouldn't comment on it, since he was still learning about Sajahka, his ticks and likes and dislikes, and he truly didn't want to push any wrong buttons. The delicate little peace he had here was perfect, and he would simply enjoy the fact that he caused a gentle, positive reaction.

"Swimming? Perfect, I think that is one of the things I'm best at! I even have stories about me and the sea and how I swam for hours and hours... But eh, it's a long story and you probably don't wanna hear about that." Pushing that memory to the back of his mind, Xewai eagerly picked up a piece of the melon that Sajahka cut up, taking a huge bite. He really didn't think he had much to do coming up soon so...

"Honestly, I think I'm free until I decide to do something else. After you arrived her, it was planned that we worked with you to get you on your feet or until you're ready to head out. If you plan to stay a while, then all my time will be dedicated to you and what you want to do. Oh, and Nyko too, once he's up and about readily. So.. Yeah, I'm free right after this, if you really wanted. We should wait a while though; swimming too soon after eating gives you cramps."

Sajah grunted around a mouthful. A temporary stand-in for an answer until he had downed several more. Without a tongue to taste with, Sajah was not much of a food connoisseur. Beyond that, what he was used to was ‘whatever was left’ for the slaves to eat: stale bread, old or expiring fruits and vegetables, and the cheapest staple product that could be cooked into gruel. His best experiences with edibles were when he stole visits to Nyko and got ‘treats’ from the kitchens—few and far between.

After downing enough food to satisfy the immediate hunger pains, he slowed down, ‘savoring’ more for a moment longer before reaching for the paper again.

i like to listen

‘Long’ stories filled silences and allowed him to learn more about the person he was with besides. In this case, between being the one who had carried through his and Nyko’s rescue and what tidbits of his personality Sajah had seen so far, he was more than interested in learning what he could about the man across from him. But, for starters, since the man had said he was free to begin immediately:

hello

Freeing up both hands temporarily, he tapped to the paper, indicating the word before signing, «Hello.» He took up the charcoal again, adding after it: my name is S A J A H K A, and followed it with a slow, careful repeat of the sentence with its adjoining hand motions. «My name is S - A - J - A - H - K - A.»

He likes to listen.. He likes to listen!! Xewai couldn't hide the grin forming on his face when he read that. He loved to talk and tell stories and make people smile. Maybe, just maybe, he could make Sajahka smile or be amazed by his own stories and once the language barrier was solved, he could listen to some of his. That would be simply amazing!

But before he could start, Sajahka began to write again and began to sign. He watched closely, trying to memorize the movements. Then, he attempted to mimic, shoving a huge spoonful of the eggs into his mouth before repeating the motions back to Sajahka. 'Hello' was easy enough to get on the first try, but the rest was harder.

"My name is... S... A... J... A... Uh... Shoot..." He tried to repeat it back but as he stated, he was a slow learner, and the 'H' was forgotten.. "Ah... Okay, We'll finish eating then you can show me again. Maybe I should sketch it out to practice! Like, making a drawn guide for letters..."

As disappointed as he was for not getting it on the first try, he still smiled back again at Sajahka, picking up another melon piece and biting into it with a loud crunch.

"I'm still so amazed by this... You have the whole letter system? Maybe you should show me all of that first, and I can sketch it and practice it all out first! That way I can study it, but... Darn, then you'd have to spell everything out until I learn more words."

Sajah hadn’t expected Xewai to actually attempt to mimic the gestures immediately. They were eating, after all, and for one just beginning, a full sentence of gesture — which, unlike simply a different ‘language’, was an entire different method of communication — was not something that could be picked up after one glance. Not to mention, Xewai did not need to learn to gesture them at all himself, only recognize them. Thus, when the man even tried, Sajah was surprised, and impressed by the effort.

Sajahka nodded. He did have a letter system. It had come later, since as a young child, when he had first began his attempts at crafting communication with Nyko, he had not even begun to learn his letters. But, he had one. After learning to read and write at least on a very basic level, it had seemed worth the effort, and useful in particular for indicating new words, or specifying names, which had no symbol of their own.

He did as suggested, though, eating while Xe did and happily finishing the rest of his prepared portion and several slices of melon. He hadn’t intended to stay much longer than for breakfast and whatever that brought, but Nyko was still healing, and he couldn’t imagine better company in a strange place than one so eager to communicate with him.

Thus, once through with his food, he wiped his hands clean, and began to spell out the alphabet, as well as a few quick key words which would be useful for the other man to recognize for rudimentary communication.

Breakfast went down real quick one he finally stopped talking and he took a moment to clear the melon rinds and dishes from the table. They would have to be cleaned later outside of his home, but for now they could sit in the little wash bin under the counter.

Table cleaned, he returned to sit across from Saj, grabbing a fresh sheet of parchment and a lengthier bit of charcoal. As Sajahka went through each letter, he drew a quick hand reflecting each one. It was sloppy and rough, but it really only mattered whether he could read it, and he could. So.. Good enough!

"Alright... So just a few more.. Yes, no, maybe, here, there, and stop and go and... Perfect~ Absolutely perfect! Let's go! The Ocean is calling our names!
