"Didn't Detective Mercer tell you?" Liam asked, eyes widening. "The cage is the Enemy's trap - it is also yours. He has not escaped - but neither have you. The weakening cage is His chance to escape - but it is also yours." He glanced towards the courtyard. "Adoelle was an interesting choice of tithe."

"He did but..."There was obviously more to the Enemy defeating everyone with each cycle, it seemed. This implied that the Enemy never managed to break free in any of the other attempts. If getting out was his end game, then it made sense why he might allow the resets, or even caused it in the first place. Or why someone on their side would do it too, for that matter. "Adoelle wished for the cage to be weakened. And now it has. I take it neither she nor Michael have died in past runs, or perhaps they have not died in such a way as they did this time around," he mused, "What is the purpose of this cage? What crimes has Renard... or us, perhaps, committed to warrant this prison?"1039

Liam folded his hands in front of him. "We were trying to save our friends," he said. "And you- you were trying to stop us." The corners of his mouth quirked up into a strange, sad sort of smile. "Obviously there's more to it than that," he added.

Shun tilted his head. This was certainly curious. As Liam said, there was certainly much more to it than just that. This answer opened the door to so many more questions. "Now... why would we try to do that?"The idea of saving those they cared about alone was not inherently wrong. There had to be something there. It implied that either these friends were 'bad' or the means in which they planned on achieving their goal. Bad was an incredibly subjective term in this case. It appeared to be 'bad' enough to them, the party who tried to stop these people. He doubted he was going to get a clear picture of whether or not it was actually wrong. Liam would likely paint it in a manner that'd make it seem like they had made the error, given his ties to the Enemy. 1184

Liam shrugged like it was a stupid question. "To save the world," he replied. "Obviously."

Shun raised his brow at Liam. "You saving your friends would have destroyed the world?" he asked flatly. He sounded a bit skeptical. What the hell were they trying to pull? 1215

"If you're going to mock the concept," said Liam, crossing his arms over his chest, "then I shan't answer any more of your questions."

"I am not mocking it. I am just having trouble understanding how that could be the case. What were you doing that would cause something on that scale? On the surface, saving your friends seems like a noble cause, but it seems that doing so carried a great price," he asked, straightening up. 1269

"Some forces are not messed with, and for good reason," replied Liam. "We were unfortunately too absorbed in our work to see what we'd become."

"And what had you become?" Shun asked, cautiously. Monsters? 1279

"I think you're quite aware of that already, Detective Kuroda," said Liam, rising from his desk. "Now, if you don't mind, I believe I have a student waiting for me." He indicated the door, where an awkward shadow stood behind the frosted glass.

Shun glanced over his shoulder briefly, then nodded to Liam curtly. "Very well. Thank you for your time, Mr. Noor."1292
