The Semblance of Unity

Predestined Victim

Preacher rolled her eyes so hard they almost got stuck. "Not what I meant, Kuroda. I mean rainy Ashdown s**t. I heard about your run-in with a wannabe ghost. Sooooo spooky." That story had made the rounds of the station as possible the most ...seasonal incident thus far. Preacher was just waiting for someone to throw pumpkins off an overpass. She'd done that before.

"Tell me 'bout the s**t that happens that I can't find out about."

"It was weird as ********. You cannot deny that," Shun grumbled. It was not a good night for him. Dealing with that man who ended up vomiting all over him while he was trying to make that arrest.

He considered his options as he tried to think about how much he should tell her. She wasn't one who dreamed, but with the way the worlds were blurring together... she wasn't exactly exempt from getting involved. It all gave him a bad feeling. At the same time, she was able to do less than those who had access to magic.

"The Other Ashdown theater is run by living mannequins," he stated, going for a slightly safer topic.

"Dude. You've dealt with ********' werewolves and a dude in a sheet is really the weirdest thing?" His grumble was funny. from what Preacher gathered, it had been an unpleasant experience. She took a little glee in that; Shun was damn stuck up and while a puking ghost wasn't a cure, it was still funny.

She chewed her lip for a moment after Shun's last sentence. Living mannequins - but why? "Like do they take normal money. And who the hell goes to see a movie in that weird-a** place?"

Shun huffed out, "It was the weirdest thing within the past few weeks. Besides, the magic s**t is starting to become normal."

It was getting a little harder to truly surprise him when he saw bizarre things now. It had a tendency to be a sort of 'why am I even surprised at this' sort of resignation. That wasn't to say that other ashdown didn't throw curveballs at him anymore.

"No. Not from what I could tell, anyway. As for why, the last time I was there they showed some past events on screen. It seems to be a place for recorded events, rather than for actual entertainment."

That was what he picked up on, at least. Speaking of which, he was going to need to go back there, sometime. Maybe he would learn about something of use... Maybe even get a hint or two of what he needed to do. That was probably asking for much.

"Normal for you, maybe, Mr. I see in the ********' Dark. I'm jus' trying to get info so the next time weird s**t happens I can get prepared." If he could see in the dark, he could certainly make out her irritated expression.

"Theater sounds kind of boring, though. I dunno why anyone would wanna go over there aside from-" She waggled her fingers. "-magic. Did the past stuff have any point?"

A sigh escaped the detective. With a slow shake of his head, he said, "That is the thing... You cannot really prepare for any of this s**t. Magic, by nature, is highly unpredictable. All you can really do is to try and expect the unexpected... and know that our rules do not apply in the other side."

Shun tossed the tennis ball into the air once, catching it normally as it came back down.

"History is never pointless. It has a tendency to repeat itself in a way."

"Well, I can try. Knowing what the ******** happened thus far gives me a lil leeway for junkin' through what's to come." And no one here seemed to follow that logic. All 'magic' and 'you'll never know's. It was frustrating.

The amount of time Shun made her rolls her eyes was surely bad for her head. "God, you are so boring. Sound like a history teacher. What'd they show, though?"

"You could be kidnapped and replaced by a doppleganger. But unfortunately, there is not really anything you can do to prepare for that, or... well. Anything. You just get ******** over for a few months, or whatever," he stated flatly, "The doppleganger that takes over gains all your memories and knowledge to make the switch seamless."

It was about all he'd say about the ball right now. All this really might accomplish is making Preacher potentially paranoid about it. He would have offered preventative methods, but he knew none in that regard.

"That is about the only thing I can think of that you need to worry about, and unfortunately I know of nothing that can be done about it."

Shun let out a huff, folding his arms now.

"You are free to go to someone else for your answers. I am hardly the only one, and quite frankly, I bet Detective Lt. Mercer can provide more satisfying responses."

"Holy ********, really? That's... weird... like what's the ********' point of that?" Changelings or some fae s**t, clearly. "Wait, are you one?" She held out her hands in the shape of a cross, an awkward movement with her umbrella. She was pretty sure no gods existed, but traditional imagery had to have some kinda value.

Then she dropped her hand. "Well, if you were, I couldn't tell so it doesn't matter." Preacher shrugged. "Real helpful, Shun." She dragged her fingers through her wet hair.

"Well, yeah. Mercer's already helped me out, y'know. You didn't even answer some a my questions." He had, in fact ignored some of them. "Are you gonna stay out here all night chucking balls with your mind?"

Shun just sort of gave her a look. Whether or not she could currently see it didn't matter to him.

"No. But if I were one, I would not admit it anyway," he stated flatly. He seriously doubted that hand gesture she made would do anything against any of the otherworld creatures. If it did work, he'd be legitimately surprised about it.

"Well then he can continue to help you out," he grumbled, "As for the balls, I planned on keeping at it for awhile longer. I need to improve."

"Orrrrrr... you could just be more forth-comin', just a bit. Just the tip never hurt no one." Preacher winked cheekily. "I'm sure you can find my number if ya feel like bein' more open." Or she could find his. It was probably in some directory somewhere at the station.

"Anyway, have fun playin' with your balls all night." Her lips twitched and she had to swallow a laugh. Wiggling her fingers at him, she turned to go.
