Utakan BakaTulip I greatly dislkie when people think to like R/C is to hate Erik. Well not everyone's that smart, Baka dear. They think to like one thing is to hate the other. I adore Erik The Persian moreso, oddly but it's sweet to see R/C. Though I do like E/C SOMETIMES. I don't read fanfics anymore. PotO got me off those horrid things. I roleplay as Erik alot (with Painted_Black as my Christine) but usually our roleplays end with Christine going with Raoul instead. Which, hey, is how it's supposed to go. It's a rarity that we have the "omghappyending" thing for those RPs. The fanfics I see scare me so much! Plus they have waaaay too much Raoul bashing...

Plus at one point there was an uprise in RaoulxErik fics. And I like shounen-ai and all, but for the love of all that is sacred and wonderful, you do NOT write that kind of pairing and not go insane! There was one fanfic which was ErikxKhanum. And omg ew. Just ew. But really, every fic I have seen has been "omg Raoul beats on Christine and she runs away to return to Erik!" or something about Raoul having a concubine. I know men had their little misstresses on the side, but Raoul's personality is too sheltered and feminine to be a lusty man. And why get a whore when he went through hell to have Christine?

Raoul almost always is. I think the hardest character for anyone to play is Raoul because half the phans hate him and see him as some guy going after Christine for tail when in truth he was madly in love with her and would've rather died than not have her as his wife.
I never read Progeny. I gave up on finding those books after reading You Are Not Alone and Phantom of Manhatten. I'll just stick to the original and Phantom.

Utakan Raoul almost always is. I think the hardest character for anyone to play is Raoul because half the phans hate him and see him as some guy going after Christine for tail when in truth he was madly in love with her and would've rather died than not have her as his wife. When I make my movie I'm going to do everything I can to make that abundantly clear. Progeny DID make me cry... but only I think because, I'll just say it, Christine died in it and it gave some excuse for how Raoul ended up in a wheelchair. But seriously no phic (save for Phantom which I'm halfway through and have two people bugging me to read it, one of whom I have to get to the read Leroux first) has ever written Erik or Raoul in character or Christine... or anyone!

Well in PoM Christine died too, but her death was utter bullshit. But really the entire book was just that.
I think no one can really get them right because we all have our desire to BE Christine and thus many people use her as a Mary Sue, twisting her personality to liken to the player. Erik's hard because, let's face it, you can't play an insane guy right. Well, I kinda can do that, but only because I like playing crazy people. Raoul for aforementioned reasoning.

It's the same way in phic. Raoul gets the short end of the stick and Christine is morphed into a self-insert so that the author can fulfill her fantasy of being swept off by Erik. I like playing/writing Raoul, but because of the raging bias I tend to lean more towards the writing now.
I've never really got it, though. What's wrong with R/C? Erik aside, it's a really cute pairing. You'd think there'd be more phangirls out there interested in that.

I think it's because of the pity held to Erik. Then again, most phans are done in by the musical more than the book, so they see Erik as a half-ugly man seeking love. Not the raging, hideous corpse of a murderer he actually is. Bleeding hearts unite to think pity can equal love and so they strive to relieve "poor pitiful Erik" of his loneliness. And screw Raoul over.
They think "well Raoul had his chance with her and lost" which is not true. Many are under the assumption he only went after Christine because she was onstage and earning fame. By all rights it was a COINCIDENCE and by Christine's word "we were childhood sweethearts" we can conjuncture that they were in love BEFORE then and had been seperated for years for whatever.
Erik, for all his glory, is a liar and a schemer. We love him, but by God Christine has every right to blow him off for deceiving her and causing harm just to get her, against her will. You don't fall in love with a man who holds your fiancee's life in his hands, forcing you to marry him instead so your beloved can live.
Anyone who loves a man despite that probably deserves the psychotic b*****d.

I just wanna note that 2 out of the 3 times Christine was in Erik's lair was because he drugged her. After she got behind the mirror he drugged her and on the stage he shoved a chloroformed rag over her face. The middle time... I think it was because she had made a promise that she would come back and see him if he let her go and she is a self described "honest girl". Also it was probably again to protect Raoul... even though she was mad at him at the time.

After she got behind the mirror he drugged her and on the stage he shoved a chloroformed rag over her face. The middle time... I think it was because she had made a promise that she would come back and see him if he let her go and she is a self described "honest girl". Also it was probably again to protect Raoul... even though she was mad at him at the time. I'm pretty sure she goes back several times in between the first and last times, actually, but it is because she promised she would to protect Raoul. As for phics, I have nothing against a good R/C phic, but the thing about them is that whoever the writer wants Christine to end up with, hte other guy is portrayed as badly as possible. ie - Raoul would belittle Christine, use her, etc, or Erik would only show his terrribly murderous lustful side, but not the pitiable, in love side. NO phic has ever shown both. (At least, not that I've read) SO while I don't mind R/C, I hate reading about Erik like that, so I don't.

There are too many "Mary Sues" out there and they really bother me. ie. "Me and my friend are transported back in time, can we save Erik?" Those ones are the worst. Ok, so lets just say you are transported back in time, heres what would happen:
1) You can't "save" Erik
2) He WILL NOT fall in love with you
3) And theres a good chance that if they knew the true, Gaston Leroux Erik, they would run away.
And there are so many other ones out there that are just as bad. ie "Erik in highschool", "Erik is brought to the future", "Christine realizes she love Erik" etc.
In short, 99% (There is a 1% that aren't bad...but only 1%) of the fanfics suck and most are just repeats of other fanfics that suck.
