The silence that followed his question was answer enough for Mikree. There was no scoffing, no scowling, no smacking. Just silence. He felt Reyes move and turned to look at him, his expression a bit of a surprise. No words came out of his open mouth, though, which prompted Mikree to smile. Not his usual grin, not a cocky smirk. Just a smile, one that hopefully conveyed he didn't mind Reyes had no verbal reply.

Then the dark lion's demeanor changed and they were back on track in their mission. He gave a quiet 'mm' to let him know he had heard and took the smack with as much grace and gusto as he could, letting the hit send his head flying to the side even though it was barely a love tap. He grimaced and closed his eyes, lifting a paw as he cowered before Reyes as the other lion snarled and ranted at him. Holding the pose until Reyes left, he slowly lifted his head to watch him speak with their target.

A few lions he had spoken to earlier approached him to ask if he was okay, but he had to keep up with the charade. He waved them off, nursing his cheek that had been hit, but watched Reyes with a glare. He was surprised that there was actually a little stab of jealousy that crept into his chest, although he couldn't quite place why. He knew this was just a mission, he knew they had orders to kill this lion. He also knew he had no say over Reyes and didn't plan on every having any. Perhaps it was because their relationship had changed a bit recently, no longer simply commander and soldier. He felt that Reyes was finally starting to look at him as an adult that could handle things, not some scrappy kid who had a lot to learn still. Perhaps that was where it was stemming from.

In any case, he slowly left the dancing area and slipped into the shadows, the golden jewelry the only real indicator of where he was as it caught the firelight from time to time. Their mission was in full swing now and he had to sulk a bit while keeping a close eye on Reyes. He'd give him a signal when he was ready, when their target was completely distracted.

"Oh~ Your royal highness, you mustn't say such things, not where others can hear you." Reyes feigned surprise with a laugh that Mikree would have obviously known was fake as the drunken body nudged against his side as they were lead farther away from the crowds by the darker of the two.

This wasn't his first time on one of these kinds of missions, but there was something fun in the way that he had attention showered on him and the affection of the grand duke for the moment. It was almost a shame really. He didn't that bad, but then again, neither did Reyes on the surface. He knew his paws were stained with unseen blood, washed away by alcohol and cold nights alone, but they lingered as voices. This man was no different.

There was a passing glance over the fading glow of the fire as they moved to lay beneath a tree, side by side, a little too close for Reyes' comfort which he showed by giving a short 'tsk' and scooting away. This only made the grand duke grin. He thought this was a game. The crowds had vanished, but their sounds still echoed, joyful as always over everything else, joined by the soulful chirps of the crickets that sung along. In the distance the sound of drums still played as Reyes' heart beat in time, still coming down from whatever Mikree had done to him.

Stealth. It was the one thing Mikree had always been bad at. He was just too loud of a lion to be quiet for long. Tonight, though, it wasn't bad if he made a little noise because it was drowned out by the party goers and the music.

Quietly he crept along in the shadows, disappearing from the thoughts and minds of those who had approached him after he had been 'hit'. He was following Reyes and the duke, but not so close as to alert their prey to his presence.

Finally Reyes settled down with the older lion, who seemed to be very involved in getting as close as he could to his commander. The commander, not his. Ugh...that was a thought he didn't need to entertain right now.

He shrugged off the pelt so it wouldn't get in his way before taking up position in some tall grass beside the tree the two had picked to lay under. Now all he had to do was wait for the signal and it would be lights out for this guy.

A grey paw raised to nudge Reyes' cloak up in a vain attempt to get the 'merchant' out of the pale fur off of him. "Care to dance for me?" The duke's voice slurred, clearly out of his element, but still enjoying the company, which he intended to enjoy to the fullest.

The request and effort earned a sly grin from the commander who allowed the motion, tilting his head sideways as a chuckle exited Reyes' mouth. He locked his eyes in the darkness, giving a shallow nod of approval that could have easily been mistaken for a dip of his head before looking back to the duke. There was really no reason to speak again. Everything would be over and done within a minute, the duke would be dead and the two 'merchants' would be gone. And while the Empress' reputation would come under attack, she would feign ignorance and denounce the fake pride the two Blackwatch agents were supposedly from.

Still, Reyes chose to speak. "Of course."

Mikree was bad at being quiet and he was also pretty awful at waiting, too. When he was alone it was easier, but when he had to go on a stakeout mission with someone he always ended up talking with them, despite their orders to remain silent. As he waited for the signal his claws dug into the dirt beneath him, which disturbed a cricket that hopped up onto his paw. It chirped a few times before bounding away, brown eyes following it until it disappeared.

Reyes' quiet chuckle brought his gaze back to the two lions under the tree and he barely caught the nod with the look. Phew...that would have been s**t if he had missed it. Once the dark lion stood he readied himself, waiting until his shot was completely clear before attacking.

No roar left him, no sound but the grass rustling and heavy paws pounding the dirt once, twice, and then he was airborne. The duke didn't even have time to acknowledge the noise before Mikree was on him, he full weight landing directly on his head. The blow stunned the old lion into silence and stillness, which allowed Mikree to use his momentum to roll the lion over and sink his teeth into his throat.

A quick jerk of his head and blood gushed from the mortal wound, no sound able to escape now even if the duke had been able to try. Mikree spat aside the mouthful of flesh and fur, dancing out of the way of the blood as it pooled at his paws. He was certainly messy now, but he had avoided the worst of it.

"Time to skedaddle," he said, glancing at Reyes with a bloody grin.
