her smile turned to a grin when she succeeded. She handed him back his coins and closed up her purse in victory. She turned back to him to continue talking, though; an idea she was not very used to yet.

"I won't sell them," she assured him. He seemed curious, though, about the process of oyster shucking. She patted her pockets and rifled through her bag to see if she had her tools with her, but no. She had left them at home. When one lived so close to the short it became pointless to carry so much around with you.

"You, uh..." she made a fist with one hand and an oyster out of the other and mimed the process of prying it open. "Then, you eat." She did, anyway. It was no fair to the creature for you to kill it for its shiny belly aches and then toss it back into the sea for the fish.

"Really? What do they taste like exactly, cause they look really odd to me. I'm used to eating insects and fish and the like but not bivalves." Though he would if that meant more pearls. "How do you cook them exactly..they sort of look like they would shrivel into nothing? Do they? Do they come out like a chip when you cook them?"

It was food and he was a male, what could he say, the culinary arts were delightful.

On a more serious note, he was glad she would not sell the two he had given her, he had felt right doing it. He wasn't sure why he had, pretty girl, pretty pearls, and she worked hard selling them, she should get to enjoy it.

Trelenwy smiled. "Not at all," she said, "but you can. Steam or roast or fry or grill. They don't taste like anything else." She might have sat what with the conversation that had started, but she didn't want to invite herself and be punished. "A little bit like their home, maybe." Oysters did, after all, seem to take on a tinge of their own water.

"You have to cook them in the shell, otherwise... maybe." She had always known how to cook, so she hadn't made that mistake. She made a closed hand, her fingers flat above her thumb, and then popped them open, making an appropriate 'pop' sound with her lips. They were done when they popped open! Unless you cooked them on the half-shell of course.

Theriar blinked, that was kind of cool, a food that conviniently popped open when it was ready to eat. "Salty tasting then? How interesting," he had to admit that on the face of it they didn't look very appetizing but they were probably good for you like the greens no one really wanted to eat. It would be a different food to be sure, he should try it. "I would like to know how to catch them..but I'm afraid I cannot swim... is it terribly easy?"

More to the point should he trust her not to drown him once he got in the water..she was pretty small but he was not fond of wet anything.

Trelenwy nodded and then gestured in the direction of the shore with her head. "Some aren't out so far. Swimming is easy."

She was going to add that 'kids do it' but that might be insulting. This man must not have grown up around water was all. He clearly didn't know that oysters were mostly stationary either.

"Come." She motioned for the man to follow and strightened her back, starting off toward the beach. "Come!"

Theriar swallowed, made a slight face at her retreating back, tucked away his treasures, slung the small pack over his shoulder and hurried after her. Fear fizzled down his limbs at the concept of giving his body up to the whims of the ravaging waves..it seemed so peaceful on shore..where you could you know see the things that wanted to eat you rather easily...was swimming really worth it?

His feet slid slightly in the sand..not even the earth here was solid. He huffed a little and marched onward to his fate, following her to the shore line and watching the waves with fascinated wariness.

Now was the time to get in the water but he felt rooted like the great trees of his homeland.

She walked ahead of him to the beach, only turning to regard him when they had arrived. He had actually bee following! A smile crossed her face and then she set her basket down, leaning to pull up her skirt and tie it at her hip. Wet clothes were not for bartering in. She picked up her basket once more and began out into the water, only ankle-deep at first and then halfway up her calves, then finally to her knees. This man was so large, surely it would be half as deep for him!

"Come," she said. She knew what fear looked like, and more importantly she knew what it felt like. It didn't have to be reasonable. So the man was afraid of water. That was fine. She would help him. She threw out her arms as if to catch a child, and then brought them into herself a few times, beckoning him closer.

He convinced himself to get about a foot away from the roiling death trap, he had been stupid, he shouldn't have asked to learn to swim, now he looked like an idiot. He stared with stony silence, most unhappy.

Then she did the odd gesture with her arms and his yellow eyes fixed on hers. Surely if someone as diminutive and gentle as she could step into the waves and not be swallowed by them, so could he. Then again, she was a siren where he might as well been a rock, firmly of the earth and firmly bent on sinking to a watery grave.

He bit his lip, not realizing he was doing it, focused on her bright eyes, tried to keep breathing and stepped forward. His feet hit the water and he hissed like a cat. It was just a puddle, they had those in Jauhar...just a puddle..just a puddle.

He swallowed until he stood in front of her and refused to look at the mess he had just willingly walked into. He stayed very still. Trying not to dance from foot to foot cause that would lead to running out like water radaku were after him.

Trelenwy grinned broadly when the man joined her. See?! It wasn't so bad! She could remember the first time she was allowed to go in the water freely. It had been nice, almost instinctual. This man clearly had no shore-dweller in him.

She touched his arm and patted it, then turned her attention to the water and let her arm drop. She pulled from the water a little white curly shell (its owner had apparently vacated) and offered it to him.

Then she wandered away, eyes on the water, looking for an oyster. This wasn't a farm or a popular place for them to be, but they were pretty much everywhere on the shore of Matori.

He was sad to say he was rather grateful for the pat, the reminder that there was someone else out here with him. Then he was blessedly distracted by the small shell that she handed him. He looked wistfully back at his bag on the shore...he wanted to put the shell in, but if he left the water he knew he would never go back in again.

She seemed to be poking about in the shallows..and as long as it remained that way (shallow), he would be okay right? Nothing big came up this way, there were no drop holes or pinchy creatures here...he rubbed a thumb along the edge of the small white shell, finding comfort from the smooth curve.

So he watched and occasionally when she wasn't looking he sneaked a step closer so he could get a better look at what she was looking at..but never actually being able to look down all the way himself.

She shuffled about for a little while and then came up with an oyster. She was beaming when she did, and was surprised to see the man closer than he had been. His eyes ticked to the side nervously, but the grin remained.

Well, he hadn't thrown her in the water yet.

She handed him the oyster for a moment as she dug through her bag for her knife. She took it back then as if she had never given it to him and sawed the joint open with ease and popped it open. She poked around with the blade in the meat a moment, then cut the meat free.

"No pearl," she said, and she pushed her mouth over to one side and shrugged. Then her smile returned, although this time it was somewhat devilish. "Eat it? Hmm?" She offered it to him again, now just on its half-shell.

Theriar took the thing on the half shell with a resigned look. Eck. Surely this wasn't food? He put it close to his mouth, sniffed and nearly gagged. Then squinted at her. "Arn't I supposed to cook it first? You can't eat this...slime raw can you?" Ewwwwwww.

He poked the squishy looking goop and was surprised at how tough part of it was. He continued poking it waiting for it to raise up grow teeth and bite him.

"Where is its mouth?"

She giggled and pointed to the front of the animal. Around there, somewhere. Then she put the shell to her mouth, tipped it up, and slurped the oyster in. She chewed on a bit and then swallowed, and then she grinned again. This guy was amusing! He had definitely never been to the shore before, or if he had then nobody had taught him anything. Had she planned, she might have taken him swimming properly.

Theri swallowed convulsively at her. Ick..she seemed to have liked it though? He still could not wipe the look off his face.

"Guess you can eat them raw, it just didn't look like it." he hiccuped and covered his mouth with his hand. He figured that if he were to eat one..he would cook it first, at least for the first time. It wouldn't do to throw up in front of someone who could at some point become his friend. He would be okay with that, he could use a friend and she was not loud or obnoxious..so win win.

"Another?" He looked at her hopefully. This one he would eat..if he could. He would give it his best shot anyhow. He was starting to get more comfortable, his shoulders relaxing somewhat.

Trelenwy threw her head back and laughed. Such a big man, and such a weak stomach! She knew that oysters probably looked rather unsavory to outsiders, though. She had grown up around them.

"Are you sure?" Once more he had gotten a full sentence out of her. She knew men were prone to bravado, though. They wanted to show off, and show that they were just as good if not better than girls. It was silly. Everyone was the same, in that nobody was the same.

Either way, she began searching around her feet and then wandered out again to try and find another oyster. "There are more by my house." Another full sentence!
