Jeremiah just gave Thorne a small smile, the slightest twitch upwards of his lips. There was no need for thanks, the look said, because this was a given. If Thorne needed Jeremiah for something, then he would obviously be there no matter what. Bonds had been formed, ties that now existed that had not in the past, and they meant more than blood. When one spilled blood with another it always meant more. He paused a moment, keys in the ignition but not turned on. Jeremiah is silent for more than a few moments, the space of several heartbeats. "... you still tell him," he said quietly, "because you will hurt him more when he finds out later." There is a look there on his face as his gaze is elsewhere and it's only there for a few precious seconds. It is pain but the kind that comes from causing it to someone else. For failing when all it would have taken was words. "It will hurt worse if you don't," he added, "because then you will feel as if you have failed him and that? That is the worst feeling."

Thorne exhaled softly against the headrest, the adams apple of his throat bobbing up and down as he swallowed, opened his eyes, and let them fall to Jeremiah. The darkness rose up around them. There was something raw here, like the truth of everything scratched too closely. Came to the surface too fast, and he didn't know what to do with it, with any of it.
But he trusted Jeremiah. He trusted him more than most in this town. And when he spoke and his eyes faltered and Thorne realized that Jeremiah surely spoke from experience, from a feeling just like the one buzzing in his chest, he feels something grow heavy inside of him. Heavy as lead, an iron anchor, a dead weight.
"That's such a terrible answer," Thorne responded, but his tone suggested he understood. He understood. He turned to look out the car window, the light catching on his jagged lines, his sharp angles. "But I will," he said softly, as though if he spoke it out loud, he would believe himself.
"I want to be someone he deserves," Thorne said like a confession, "I want to be - something good for him. Even if he leaves." He paused, his breath stalling in his throat. "But selfishly, hopelessly, I want him to stay. Even through everything, all of these terrible truths. I want him to stay."

It is not often that Jeremiah opened up and shared like this, not in the slightest. Yet there is, as he said, a kindred spirit in Thorne that he can sense and he will help as best he can. Especially when the similarities pile up. If he asked, he wondered if Thorne would say the same about checking for life after the nightmares have faded. "Then you have to stand by that. To do anything less is to not be worthy of him." The vehicle is started up with a sigh, Jeremiah's bright glowing eyes focusing on Thorne in the rear view mirror a moment. "... and besides, there's always a selfish side of love: wanting him to stay through all the darkness." A deliberately broad term because darkness covered so much. Yet it was incredibly appropriate. "Just remember that the odds are he wants the same for you. To be good for you, to look out for you, to be someone you deserve." It had been touched upon earlier. "... so make him feel like that and everything will work out." There was a huff, a breath of laughter that didn't quite fully escape. "Beyond that? Steal him away if necessary and get out for a little while. It helps to remember that there is a world and a life outside of what we deal with here."

Thorne blinks at Jeremiah, his eyes half-lidded, and a guttural sound dropping in his throat. He wants to reply more, but his head is starting to feel heavy, the words drilling into an opened, vulnerable part of him.
"I..." He starts, stops, tries again, "I'll remember that. Thank you - really." He looks over at Jeremiah, and it's there, an expression that tells the older man he's not sure how to respond, but the meaning of the detectives words cuts deep enough that it will stay. That he will remember. His eyes dip, and he folds his hands and unfolds them, running his fingers over the intricate patterns of his tattoos to keep himself awake a little longer.
He let out a laugh. "I think some of his roots are here," he said softly, "But I'll take him somewhere one day. Somewhere far away, and maybe then..."
He trails off, bites away the words.
"Maybe by then I'll be worthy too."azuredreams good to end on ur post? * V*

Jeremiah gives Thorne a smile. A true smile, albeit it small because other smiles are reserved for Algie and no one else. The road is in front of him, lit by the headlights of the car. It starts to rain as he approaches Coalsmoke. "I'm sure you will be, Thorne. Besides," glowing eyes glance over towards him, "it does not matter where his roots are. If his home is with you then that's where he'll be. You just have to find that out." There was more that could be said but the points had been made and others were better left unspoken. Especially when Thorne already understood and Coalsmoke ready to take him back for the rest of the night.
