A wave of relief washed over Brian as Misha entered. He hadn't checked to be sure who was following who and regretted it somewhat as he stood in the abandoned inn. Now, at least, he knew where two of his friends were; the ones who he'd been wishing someone would look out for.
Of course, this relief was coupled with the knowledge that Misha was bound to cause trouble. He smiled at her and nodded. "Hello again."
He should have known that Misha would know everyone present! he rolled his eyes and looped an arm around Beth to keep her standing. Frankly he had forgotten she was clinging at all. Beth was a touchy-feely type and he might have been horrified about it were he not so fond of her. 794

"If it's birds, I'll hold myself responsible." And he hadn't even had to deal with them as personally as everyone else had, having been knocked out for a majority of the trip and all. But he'd seen enough to not want to deal with them again, and heard even more.
Shifting his hammer on his shoulder, almost fidgeting. Impatient to find out what was going on, expect, not really. There was a certain accumulating air of dread spreading throughout the chosen that was impossible not to react to, even if he hadn't felt it himself. On the other hand, Rose's hopeful theory of taming wild and mystical beasts could be exciting.
Another new face, and Ed offered a small nod in greeting before the woman that entered behind her, the one that offered a wink and blown kiss actually had him smiling back at her. "Misha, you're in good spirits." He was fine, but that was probably obvious. She was a little too cheerful given the circumstances, but it wasn't the first time he'd seen her trying to hide less favorable emotions behind a happy mask.

Once they've organized inside the abandoned building, Griffin narrows his eyes thoughtfully, stroking his chin as he surveys the raggedy lot of them.
"Hmm. We will go about this slowly, carefully. Work in teams -- of two or three. Pick up any bedrolls, abandoned clothing, rations, backpacks. Be careful of any tracks; if we take a closer look at those, we might be able to figure out if anyone or anything else came into camp and caused trouble. Generally just try not to step on anything or mess it all up, yes?"
Griffin's eyebrows go up at that last, and with his silky accent and comfortable posture, it's hard to tell if he's actually worried about them putting their feet in anything important, or if he's merely teasing -- but there is a faint glimmer in his eye.

It was time for business all over again. At the mention of "groups of two or three" he looked between Beth and Misha. No, he told himself. He was being over-protective and there was no reason to. They were all going to be in the same building. Thus, he turned to Beth and offered her a smile.
"What do you say?" he said, "Should we go backpack-digging? Or... broken-window-searching?" Those were his two first thoughts, and they were a little cinematic. Maybe they'd find a map or otherwise telling paper in the backpacks? Or maybe something had come in through a window. At this point he had no idea where the line between reality and supernatural cliche was drawn.
"How many people were sent out here, Griffin?" Brian asked. A part of him told him to call the Ares Chosen "Sir" but in the end didn't think it was necessary. Not unless Griffin asked for it, he supposed. 966

Misha is, of course, acknowledged and invited. 8P
Character Name:Brian Watterly Brief description of character: A passionate, competent leader-type with a bit of difficulty expressing the emotions he feels. Deity: Zeus Weapon: Bow (balanced ranged) HP: 47/47 Minicert:
With a bit of a grumble, eyes raking over familiar faces and then away, Asher opted to explore within the abandoned building -- idly kicking at some abandoned pants to see what might be hidden within. His movements were still sluggish, slow, weighed down by the heat in the air, eyes cutting sideways to Ed as he poked his way around.
"This is a bit..." he hesitated over the words, squinting into the leg of the pants. "Less...exciting, than the last adventure out?"
Character Name:Asher Zimmerman Brief description of character: Asher is a kinetic young man who has a hard time sitting still for long stretches of time. He is impulsive and dismissive, and covers up any self-consciousness with sarcasm.
It was a good thing that Brian was holding onto Beth as, upon seeing Misha, she started waving the woman over, the windmilling of her arm tugging her slightly off balance. She returned Misha's one-armed embrace happily. Quietly promising herself to catch up with her once the business part of their trip was done, she watched Misha move to Brian's side and greet him as well. Asher hadn't done anything more than give her a look, so she resolved to leave him on his own for awhile, no matter how concerned she was. Their other two companions seemed nice enough. When the blonde (Edward, was that what Misha had said?) who might have been offended by her on some unremembered occasion cracked a smile at Misha, Beth smiled in relief as well. She would trust her friend's recommendations.
When Griffin gave them their instructions, Beth was sure to put her serious business face on, perhaps looking a bit comical to those who knew her to be both warm and nervous. She had no idea how to deal with a crime scene, and so turned to her friend, the cop. "I'm not sure! How do you normally run through a crime scene?" She was genuinely curious. She knew those procedural crime shows made up half of their imagery for the drama and iconic striving. She scrunched up her nose, trying to think of the most common sense thing to do. If she were smart, what would she suggest? "Well, the backpacks sound less dangerous than broken glass, so that's where I would go. I suppose we could always recycle what we find? If they brought it, they probably thought they would need it, right?" She leaned down to grab the nearest back pack, letting her hand slide from Brian, though kept it held out in case she needed to be grabbed.
Character Name:Beth Almasy Brief description of character: A sweet but skittish beauty who's lived in the lap of luxury her whole life, Beth doesn't quite know what she's doing. She's always willing to support and cheer on her friends, mostly so she doesn't actually have to lift a finger.
Brian laughed slightly. That was a common misconception.
"The CSIs go through the crime scene for evidence. We just do the initial walkthrough," he admitted. The cops were the ones to get the first glimpse, gather the basic information, and take photos of any evidence visible to the naked eye. He supposed his duty to search through people's purses and personal belongings was helping him here, though. If only he had gloves! "Careful so nothing sticks you."
Considering Beth seemed a bit uneasy at the thought of falling over, Brian stayed nearby and counted the backpacks before beginning to rifle carefully through the one beside Beth. He was meticulous and careful in his work and hoped it wasn't costing anybody precious time.

Everyone quieted down as Griffin started speaking up, and Ed listened along with the rest of them. When they were dismissed, instructions given, the bouncer glanced around at his fellows before Asher's voice, closer than he'd been expecting it, drew his attention down to him.
"You'd know better than I would," he commented idly, nudging at a pile of knapsacks with the heavy end of his hammer. "Though it's certainly starting out considerably more subdued." Head tilting, he examined a few of the contents that had spilled from one of the disturbed packs, then glanced up to Asher, brows arched.
"You're looking miserable today." There was no bite or tease to it, just an observation.

Having watched to see Brian taking Beth under his wing, Misha nodded to herself and hid her softer, fonder smile by turning her head to study a broken window. Safety in numbers was good and she knew she felt safe with friends so... As it followed. It also pleased her more than a little to earn an actual smile from Edward.
After a few moments of staring at the window, however, she realized that she had absolutely no idea what she was looking at and laughed under her breath sheepishly. She noticed there was no glass on the inside of the inn, though. According to CSI: Miami, that meant whatever broke it came from inside and was heading outwards.
Which solved nothing.
Chewing on her bottom lip thoughtfully, she tiptoed over to a pile of fabric. She sank into an easy crouch beside it, set her buckler down on the floor next to her, and began gingerly lifting pieces of what appeared to be clothing and towels and sleeping bags to peer beneath.

"How many people were sent out here, Griffin?"
"Eight Chosen were sent out to investigate." Griff smiled briefly at Brian. Sir, apparently, was not necessary.

Asher's idle kicking stirred the abandoned pants enough for him to see chewed edges and wear and tear that did not look like something from normal use.

Beth must have grabbed at the backpack at a bad place because a cascade of small items spilled out of it as she lifted; mascara, sunscreen, bug spray, aloe vera, and a couple of expensive tubes of BB cream and other sundries clattered to the ground in a bright spill of containers.
The backpack Brian rifled through, by contrast, had marks on the outside, but it looked like it had been blundered into by something with claws that may or may not have gotten tangled. There was a first aid kit inside of this one, extra bandages, and some remedies for bug bites and sunburn.

Nudging the pile tipped it over, and brought a distinctive odor to Ed's nose; something had peed, either on the knapsacks or near enough to them that the tipping pile made the smell waft up.

There wasn't much beneath the pieces, but if she looked at each bit as she touched it, Misha'd find that the haphazard nature of the pile of cloth meant that everything was varying degrees of scuffed and dirty, and a few pieces had new holes where things had been pushed through the cloth from the inside, tearing outward.

Beth's eyes widened as she recognized the bottles and tubes and tins that fell. She reasoned that none of it was very helpful in their search for answers, but could potentially be very handy to have themselves. Her outstretched hand folded back towards the bag, though she teetered a bit dangerously, and started putting the items back into the back pack. An idea formed in her mind, and she reached into her various pockets and started putting her own stash of beauty items into the side pouches of the bag she held.
Part of her warned that if someone were to recognize the bag, she might be in trouble, but a better part of her thought there was no harm in giving themselves the best chance to succeed. And perhaps she could reunite the owner with some of their misplaced valuables. She slung the bag over her shoulder and turned to Brian, saying, "Well, it doesn't seem like they expected much danger. Whoever this was, they had my kind of priorities. Makeup, bug spray, sunscreen. Not necessarily what I would pack for a potentially perilous mission." Of course, she had learned from her mistakes last time, and had brought similar items with her on a jaunt that she knew from experience might lead straight into the belly of the beast. So she didn't think she was necessarily one to judge.
She then looked at the bag Brian held and pressed a delicate hand to her mouth. "Is that...do you think maybe it was just a wood animal? At least the first aid kit could be handy!"
Beth looked over at Misha, but couldn't quite see what her friend had found. In any case, she was more or less stuck in her position, crouched next to Brian, for fear of falling over.
Character Name:Beth Almasy Brief description of character: A sweet but skittish beauty who's lived in the lap of luxury her whole life, Beth doesn't quite know what she's doing. She's always willing to support and cheer on her friends, mostly so she doesn't actually have to lift a finger.
The filth of the clothing she touched was only slightly off-putting once she spotted the ragged tears. Misha's eyes widened, huge and grey in her heart-shaped face, and she bit down on her lower lip. She fingered a fraying edge. Then she draped the item over her left forearm and reached for another piece and another. Each one had the same sort of strange holes. Other than the filth and the rips, everything seemed to be fairly new.
Not a single tear she found was thorugh a worn-thin bit of fabric. Misha swallowed. She had no idea what that meant other than... The people wearing these items had voluntarily torn them off their own bodies. What if it was a flesh-eating bacteria or something? Cursing under her breath, she quickly dumped the items on her arm into the curved side of her buckler and picked it up like a large and rather gruesome serving dish. She flowed to her feet with barely a totter.
"Brian?" she called. "Can I get a second pair of eyes on this?" Her skin itched. "It looks like someone either was in a big hurry to get some and couldn't be bothered with buttons or..." She trailed off, looking at him with clear concern.
"Hey, I found some uh... interesting wear and tear," Brian said. Admittedly, it was mostly tear. "It was just kind of put up over here with the others, though. Like it happened outside." He turned to Beth then and regarded her makeup but didn't quite react. He recognized some of the products from his sisters' vanity but that didn't mean he knew what they were.
The terrible smell that wafted up from the other pile of bags made him wrinkle his nose and turn.
"I think, uh..."
Misha grabbed his attention. Clothes? Clothes. Ripped from the inside. Something inside bursting out.
Werewolves. That was what Brian thought. It was going to be werewolves this time. One of the campers, someone with medical supplies, had been attacked in the woods. Their bag had been torn, but they'd escaped. Then they'd come back, turned in the night, potentially killed their fellow Chosen and then dove out of a window.
The people in the woods were going to be attacked by werewolves and there was absolutely nothing he could do to warn them.
"Okay, this is gonna sound insane, but... when did you lose contact? And when was the last full moon?" He already felt like a fool, but what else were they supposed to do but postulate? There was enough evidence to ask, and if he was right? If he was right and said nothing, they'd be under-prepared-- no. No, no. Someone else would just come up with it first, he wasn't all that smart.
He stood from his crouch and began to search for human or animal tracks first near the broken window, then back toward the main area of the room, then over by the door...

Beth's glance went from Misha to Brian and back again. She felt her stomach twist at the sudden tension in both of her friends. The fear in Misha's voice, trying to be hidden behind her glibness, made her swallow any words that might have played along. At Brian's sudden change in tact and focus, Beth took in a sharp breath. Based on what they had discovered, it was a logical conclusion. She tried to think back to if there were records of lycanthropy in Greek myth. "Are werewolves, like, a thing? I mean, after metal birds, I would accept practically anything. And I want to say there's precedent for shape shifting in the myth. But..." She stuttered to a stop. "Usually that was from eating something enchanted or...as a punishment for sins." Quietly, she wondered what kind of sins Chosen of the gods might commit to be changed into animals.

Misha looked down at the clothing piled in her buckler and then back at Brian and his sudden, deep interest in the floor. She muttered another low curse, French this time, and strode across the room to dump the clothing recklessly at Griffin's feet. She looked up to meet the handsome weaponsmaster's eyes and there was a sharp intelligence there for an instant as she sized him up. Then she huffed a breath, shook her head, and turned around again to return to Beth's side. Her newly emptied buckler hung loosely from her fingers. Her free hand rubbed at Beth's elbow. "I've been reading some, too," she admitted, "and... Wasn't there a story about a king feeding his son to the gods or something? I can't keep the names straight."
She shook her head and watched Brian searching in silence for a moment. Then she forced a smile at Beth before twisting to share it with Griffin. "So did everyone carry ID on them when you sent them out? We should be finding those at least. What about their Chosen badges? Don't those protect us against enchantment?"
