"... why would-" There was a chitter that went through the entire village; nervous squeaks and shuffling. "We are nothing like that!"

Finally Per skittered forward, black eyes looking up at Temperance. He truly was nothing more than a squirrel even if his paws seemed far more dexterous.

"We can promise you this," he said, "but in return we need you to get the emblem."

Their collective protestations were not unexpected, but a girl had to be safe. Well, mostly safe. Temperance shrugged and looked down at little Per.

"Emblem?" Okay, now this really was a video game. There were emblems and fetch quests - but everyone needed a break from the main story quest sometimes. "Um... where is the emblem, what does it look like and, um, what does it do?"

"It changes what it is," Per replied, "and is hidden near the water. There is a symbol always on it." His paw moved in the dirt, drawing something that very crudely looked like a shield.

"You can hear it when you get close to it, like cicadas. With it we can protect ourselves, keep everyone safe."

"The water," Per repeated. "The big water that turns red soon." He scrambled around Temperance, heading towards one of the trees and sat at the roots.

"You have to be back before that happens." There was a flick of tail, clearly pausing. "... thank you." Then he was climbing up the tree and disappearing into the leaves along with the rest of the brethren.
