"A little less on the cacti," Brian said. What had Misha been like as a child, he wondered? Probably one of those ones your family friends told you was going to be trouble with boys, before they were even able to talk properly. He'd always thought that that was a little weird.
"Tex?" he repeated, but with a strong, exaggerated Southern accent. "Yeah, of course." He turned away slightly then and shook his head. "Damn Yank."
After a moment of silence, he turned back to Misha with a smile. "My mom was born in New York anyway. I'm half-scum. At least that's how they act if you tell them." He afforded a little chuckle. 1,122

Misha wrinkled her nose and rolled her eyes, then suddenly crossed them for him and grinned. "Funny how that works," she replied lightly. "People get all sorts of pre-conceived notions about places and people." She lifted their linked hands and shifted and pulled them a bit until they rested on her knee. The insides of her wrist was exposed and her forearm, all of it faintly lit by the ambient lingering light, looking golden. "My mom is full-on Lebanese. You can imagine what that gets her sometimes." She shrugged it off, dismissing it with a proud smile. "She's the best, though. Speaking of New York, she took me up there when I was eight for my very first Broadway show. Have you ever been to New York?"

Brian laughed at the facial expression, his head throwing back briefly, and then returned his gaze to Misha. "Yeah, it's true. People talk about 'Yankees' like they're all rich leftists and 'rednecks' like they're all white trash yokels." He shrugged. People said some s**t about cops too. That didn't mean it was true.
"Oh, really?" He glanced down at their hands only briefly, having barely registered the move. He was a little amazed that he hadn't copped-up and released himself. Well. He'd been surprising himself a lot lately. "I'd noticed you were bilingual. I mean, at least bilingual. Is it born-and-raised?"
On the mention of Broadway he nodded. "Yeah, I've been. My mom's from the city. I can't say I've ever been to Broadway, though. I mean, down the street, sure, but my dad and I always went and did something else when mom and the girls got 'ladylike,' as my dad would say. To be honest, I've always been curious." He laughed slightly as if that was an embarrassing secret. 1,309

"Tri-lingual. I'll try anything once." A wicked little smirk flashed over her expression before settling back to warm amusement. She squeezed his hand. "Seriously, though, I speak three languages. French, Arabic, and English. Born and raised with them, too, which made for some fun times in kindergarten, let me tell you. Code-switching five-year-olds are adorable... Or not. My poor teachers." She tipped her head to one side then and Misha studied Brian's face for a moment. "Curious is good. It's how we find out things. I hereby give you permission to ask me anything..." She suddenly leaned closer and dropped her voice to a whisper, light and teasing, "If you ask, I'll even take you to a Broadway show."

"Oh!" Well then, trilingual! Not many people could boast that, although admittedly it was a lot easier to learn a language when you were a toddler than as a teen. It seemed like the world had been catching on to that in the last decade or so.
"I was brought up speaking Spanish and English. I'm half-Spanish." People always acted surprised when he said that, like he should be proud to be as fair as he was. They also liked to confuse "Spanish" with-- well. Anyway. Being bilingual had helped a lot in his career.
Something about Misha's whisper caused a shiver to run through him. He rolled his eyes to the sky and closed them as he shook his head. When he opened them again he was looking straight at Misha, grinning.
"I'll keep that in mind," he answered silkily, and then chuckled and let his his forehead fall against Misha's for a moment. Favorite color? Favorite scent? Favorite poooo--nnnnope. Nope nope. He shook his head again, kissed her nose, and pulled back. "You're trouble, you know that?" He had a feeling she did. 1,508

His unexpected kiss, that moment of direct affection and the first initiated by him, melted her a bit and Misha resisted the urge to snuggle in and rest her head on his shoulder in a mixture of gratitude and attraction. Because Misha had eyes and would never deny the good looks of a man like Brian. She could, however, behave and realize that planting a rewarding smooch directly on that mouth would likely send him running... Or into heart failure. She could not smother the smile completely, though, and she studied him from under her dark lashes. "You think so?" she murmured. "Then are you sure you're safe out here alone with me?" It was light. It was teasing. It was non-committal. Except that it was also warm and close and she was still leaning just that slight bit forward.

Brian was pleased to see Misha smiling. It felt like some sort of personal triumph to have done something Misha didn't seem to expect. She was the queen of surprises, and he'd only known her a week or so. He was a little ashamed to admit, even to himself, that he really did enjoy the unpredictability of her. It was bad for his job, unpredictability. It was the last thing you wanted and the one thing that always had you sprinting down the street and jumping over fences and dodging into back yards. It was why they taught you things like target glancing and evasive maneuvers.
Somehow, on Misha, it was a good thing.
It made him want to play along.
Misha peered up at him from beneath her eyelashes, and he tilted and inclined his head slightly himself.
"Is that a threat?" he asked. His voice was deep and husky. With what may well have seemed like no hesitation at all, he leaned in closer. It was not quite a kiss, and not quite an attempt at one, but he was close. He was very, very close. He could feel Misha's breath on him. He could feel the heat of her. It was a blatant tease and he had no idea what she was going to do in return, wasn't even sure she was attracted to him, but all of the unknowns somehow invigorated him. 1,747

"Don't know. I mean..." Misha released a soft sigh, reveling in the heat and the surprising playfulness Brian was offering her. It was another unexpected aspect of him, she considered. On the mountain, he radiated competence and seriousness and focus - except when she prodded him into laughter. She never would have guessed he could match her like this. She was not complaining. Not one bit. In fact, she tightened her fingers on his and, with a gentle but insistent tug, drew him even closer to her. Much like the setting sun moment earlier, it was increasingly hard to tell where she began and he ended. Their body heat melded, raising her internal temperature further. Their mouths were even closer and Misha kept her lashes lowered as her gaze turned almost inward and her movements became instinctual. Her tongue flicked out to wet her upper lip and Brian felt the faintest brush as a result. Then, swiftly and smoothly, she shifted forward and twisted slightly. Her full lips pressed against the corner of his own mouth for an instant before she slid past, cheek to cheek. Misha only stopped when her mouth was close enough to his ear for him to hear her short, fluttery breathing. "Threat implies you wouldn't enjoy it," she finally whispered in a painfully velvet tone. He hadn't been sure what to expect, but that was half of the fun. One of his guesses had been approximately this. Of course his brain prodded him and reminded him that there was a chance, just a chance, of something more. He reminded it that he knew better. Misha seemed to prefer to tease.
Brian fell into the tug more easily than he might have imagined of himself and instinctively dipped his nose. He was a tall man, after all, and Misha was barefooted. The soft brush of what he couldn't discern as lip or tongue caused a gentle chin rise, though, and a definite rise in his heart rate. He should have guessed, though, and when Misha kissed the corner of his lips and disappeared she was liable to hear all of the air leave him. His eyes closed for just a moment.
Damn her and her power over him!
Her breath tickled his ear and send a pleasant tremor down his spine. Words might have served him, but instinct said to first nuzzle slightly against her cheek. Secondly it asserted that he respond to her assumption. The young man lifted his chain again, but this time exhaled softly on Misha's own ear and nibbled it slightly. Would it be effective? He had no idea. That was also half of the fun.
With that done he found himself grinning and chuckled. They were twisted oddly out here on the beach, and as much as he'd hate to admit it he felt the heat in the tops of his ears and in the contact between their palms and the pulses in their throats. 2,021

As a small whimper escaped her at the feel of his teeth against her earlobe, Misha told herself there was absolutely no shame in reacting to Brian's actions. The man clearly had skills, if not necessarily game, and, if she were honest... Her teasing had been done partially to see how he would react, half hoping he would react favorably. Favorably was proving to be an understatement and she felt goosebumps spring to life along her arms and the back of her neck. A delightful shiver slithered down her spine. Who would have thought? What a pleasant surprise indeed... Misha tipped her head slightly more to one side, offering more of her neck to him, savoring the feel of his breath on her skin. When he drew back and chuckled instead of pursuing the opportunity, though, she made a strangely eloquent noise in the back of her throat. He started this but he was most certainly not allowed to finish it until she gave him permission. With that thought firmly in mind, she firmly drew him even closer. A tug brought his hand forward and a deft twist of her own in his loosened the hold abruptly until she could settle his palm flat against her hip beneath the heavy fabric of her sweatshirt. She pressed her hand down atop his then to keep him in place. Then, with a little hum, Misha leaned in further until her lips brushed the strong curved turning of his jawline just beneath his ear. A little further and her soft lips caught his earlobe before her teeth returned his earlier delicate nibble. Only then did she pull back with a soft, shakey giggle. Not all the way. Just enough to give a bit of breathing room. "Well, hello," she whispered.

Brian smiled at the whimper. He hadn't really been expecting to go this far or get this close. He didn't feel lost, though. He didn't feel like he had gone this far and was thus obligated to continue. In fact, the officer found that he rather liked it. He hadn't felt a connection like this to another person in a long time.
Having been completely oblivious to the offer or further neck-flesh, Brian was surprised to find himself being pulled again. When his fingers met warm flesh they began to move of their own accord, gently stroking and feeling the new sensation. A soft puff of air left his lungs through parted lips and he realized that he had been lingering when Misha's full lips appeared again at his jaw and trailed to his ear. A soft sound echoed in his chest at the feel of her breath and teeth so delicately applied. He heard her giggle when he was released and he grinned.
"Hello, Beautiful," he said back and turned, shifting the direction he was facing entirely to keep a point of contact at Misha's hip while he began at the gentle swell of her jawline and began to kiss across, then down her neck and up again. He hovered just beyond her lips, giving her ample room to retreat or turn her head so he would meet her cheek, and then went in for a kiss. 2,263

The thought of dodging the kiss clearly never entered Misha's mind if the way her lips pressed against his were any indication. Soft and warm and pliant, her mouth moved against his in gentle exploration. She did not push or rush but there was an element of irresistability to the kiss. Misha wanted this kiss and would not be denied. She brought her free hand up to touch his shoulder gingerly before resting it there. This? This was so very nice and she felt something inside relaxing and unwinding and he was very, very good at this. The kiss was almost chaste but it lingered and drew out for long moments. Then Misha gave a little hum of pleasure against his mouth. Her hand edged up his shoulder to brush the bared skin of his neck. She smiled but did not pull back. "Wish come true?"

Brian could not be more pleased for the kiss's lingering quality. There was no lust behind it, just some sort of emotional escalation that he rather enjoyed. They had both needed it, he felt. Hopefully they had both wanted it. He had. He wouldn't forget this one.
When the kiss finally ended, Brian smirked and spoke against Misha's lips. She was a beautiful woman, really, but she was strong too. Trustworthy. Good head on her shoulders. He liked her in all aspects, and it seemed she liked him too.
"Am I allowed to tell you after it happens?" He was teasing, of course, but that was sort of what this night had become. 2,381

"Sure. Especially if I can make it happen again." Misha shifted her hand to better cup the back of his neck and, while he could not see her smile in their current position, he certainly could hear it. She liked him, she decided with warm certainty. Anyone with eyes could see Brian was handsome but his strength and charm were the sort of things that just were - not flashy, not pushing himself forward. She trusted him. He was someone special. A good person, a good man. Leaning in a scant hairsbreadth, she allowed her lips to brush against his again, feather-light, as she added in a soft whisper, "I don't mind at all."

Rather than respond with words, Brian brought a hand up to Misha's cheek and leaned in the extra atom for their lips to connect again. There was some part of him, albeit a small part at the very back of his mind, that was screaming to know what all of this meant. The rest of him was pretty sure he knew what it meant and, honestly, he didn't mind either.
This kiss was a little more sure of itself and a little stronger, but still lacking the electric need of lust. He felt a lot for this woman, but she wasn't after him for his uniform. In fact, did she even know he had one? He was apparently pretty easy to call, but Misha had never asked. It had never seemed to matter. Their connection existed on a personal, human level rather than the surface. It felt like he's known her forever, not the short while he actually had.
His eyes had fluttered shut at the kiss' inception as his lips pressed against Misha's and the warm fuzzies that had developed in his chest at even seeing the woman still held strong. 2,573
