She left the subject of who would be to blame if the leaf girl got sick alone. There was no point in arguing about it. Clearly the girl thought others would believe her if she said no. Rajani had already been blamed for the actions of others once in her life. It wasn't something she wanted to go through again.
Her grey hues moved toward Constynce, taking in her expression, but the shifter left her head facing away from the leaf girl. "I don't." The times she had hurt people in the past had been for survival. Rajani couldn't regret that. "My future is already different than my past.. I just don't really know what is in it."

No regrets? Pondering that a moment, she nodded solemnly. There were some circumstances... where hurting someone else was necessary. "I suppose.. as long as you find it was necessary..." People did have different ideas of what 'necessary' meant, but she left that open in the air. Details.. would probably not help anything.
The last comment made Constynce c**k her head in thought. "You should try to see that as a good thing. That provides all the opportunity for you to make good choices." She reached out the gently brush some leaves. "I don't like what's in my future, but I know it's for the best. I'd rather not know what was going to come.."

Now the leaf girl had her attention, if only because she was curious. Rajani turned so that she was facing the darkly colored one. "Don't like it?" What was there in her future that could make her be so sure she didn't like it? "Is someone going to beat you? Lock you in a room?" Her head tilted to the side slightly as she eyed the girl.
"And if it's so bad that you don't like it.. how is it for the best?" That was what she really wanted to know.

The suggestions the shifter came up with surprised Constynce. After a moment, she shook her head, cheeks red. "It's sort of like getting locked into a room. I'm probably going to sound silly to you... It's an arranged marriage that I did not wish for.. and my betrothed is.. not one I would have chosen for myself. It will benefit the village though, combining it with another, larger village." Her eyes shifted away. "My home might not survive without the joining. It was decimated during the war with the Alkidike. ..I must go through with it for their sake. That is why it is for the best. It's just selfish of me to do otherwise."

So the girl was going to marry someone she didn't want to marry in order to help her small village survive? Rajani didn't see anything wrong with that, other than the girl didn't seem to want to be tied down. "Why does it have to be you? Are you the only girl left in your village?" She didn't think the whole weight of it should be on the one girl's shoulders. There were other ways to save a village.
"What exactly does your village need to survive on it's own?" Now she had to admit she was curious.

Blushing lightly, Constynce continued keeping her eyes to the side. "No... but I am the chieftain's granddaughter. I am to be the connection between leaders. ...I was the one offered in exchange for assistance." Ugh, how she hated the sound of that...
Closing her eyes, she paused a moment before answering. "It needs people. It needs land that is able to support crops. It needs finances. The years since the war.. we were unable to bounce back. We lost so many back then." Her eyes watered slightly, but she quickly pushed that aside. "Enough remain to keep the dream of the village becoming whole again, though. They are steeped in tradition, and do not wish to leave home." She glanced over to the shifter, and quickly back away. "I understand that there are worse situations to be in... I truly do. ..Forgive me for appearing selfish. I do not wish to.. but I cannot deny what my heart feels."

She frowned somewhat. Rajani couldn't say she was fond of the idea of arranged marriages but she could see where something like this would come into play. To save a village. So she took a deep breath. "No, it's not selfish..." It did bring up memories of talks she'd had with her mistress on the days she was more kind than others. Rajani chewed on the inside of her cheek for a time in silence before she decided to say something else.
"It could be much worse.. but you should at least strive for a friendship with the one you are to marry if there can be no love. Being friends can make things much easier." That was what her mistress had told her back then. Being friends with someone was easier than digging in your heels and resisting.

Constynce looked over at the girl with surprise, followed by an appreciative relief. That was all she had ever wanted to hear... Even if it couldn't change the circumstances, it was a comfort to have someone else verify her feelings on the matter.
Friendship with the man... She thought back on the incident in the mountains... "That.. is my hope," she admitted. She wanted things to go well, but, at this time, love didn't seem to be an option. "Thank you for listening.. er.." smiling bashfully, she pushed herself to sit up and smiled. "My name is Constynce. What is yours?"

All she could do was nod her head. If the girl was going to try to be friends then that was all that could be done. "Rajani. My name is Rajani." Ok, so she didn't dislike this leaf tribe member, but she was a far cry away from trusting her. Still, there was hope for friendship.
