He flashed a grin at Jeremiah, lighthearted and relaxed, though it morphed into surprise a second later.
"Wait, there is? Which one? I've read all of his books but the latest, you'd think I would have noticed there was someone that was reminiscent of you..." Nathaniel was momentarily lost in thought, sorting through all of Algernon Mercer's characters inside of his head.
He followed Jeremiah outside, hoisting the basket of supplies up onto his hip as he went, smiling a little at the cat purring happily on his owner's shoulders.
"Oh, well," said Nathaniel, slightly embarrassed of all of the compliments. "I mean, that's a pretty far off dream. I have a few houseplants, and some succulents that I've been growing - the cacti is probably growing the nicest - but it'd be good to have an actual garden. The most I have is the square foot of space just outside my complex."
Which was hardly anything at all, considering multiple people - and dogs - had stepped in it by now.

Jeremiah's lips twitched when he watched the expression flit across Nathaniel's face as he tried to think about which character it was that was based on him. "Oh there is definitely one that is reminiscent of me but it's not necessarily obvious." Especially considering it was the female detective that worked with Red Herring. A skeptic turned believer, having found herself part of something she never had realized was possible. Never mind that, in a twist, Jeremiah had ended up with one of her abilities. She never missed her target and neither did Jeremiah. Hellbine was deposited onto his perch on the veranda (which was covered in both soft flowering moss and viney flowers) and Jeremiah tilted his head for Nathaniel to follow him down into the garden. "Well perhaps you should think about opening up your own nursery? Someday, at least, and not just having your own garden. You have a passion, Nathaniel, and pursuing that is never wrong." His head tilted to the side. "Though I may ask about perhaps getting some cuttings of your succulents. They're good to have around the house and I've not got many."

Nathaniel was still trying to discern which character Algernon had based off of Jeremiah, trailing after the man in question with all of their supplies. He'd read all of the books; it was just a matter of putting the pieces together until they fit properly.
It successfully distracted him until they went outside, and then Nathaniel's attention was caught by the garden, sprawling and beautiful, the familiar scents of fresh herbs, air, and fauna reaching his nose. He breathed it all in, closing his eyes momentarily, and just let everything ease around him, sweeping across his senses.
This was what he loved. This familiarity, and open air and plants and everything all at once.
Nathaniel turned his head to smile at Jeremiah. "Maybe one day," he said wistfully, glancing at the garden again. "Right now I don't have the money, but it would be nice, y'know. If one day I could make it."
He stooped to rummage in the basket of things.
"You can have some of my succulents if I can steal some of your seeds."

Nathaniel would figure it out eventually. That or he'd see the badger key chain on Jeremiah's house keys someday and really click (because the female lead had a nickname of badger). The smile on the young man's face was certainly helpful because it was always nice to see someone else be able to appreciate his garden. "Perhaps one day I'll help you make it happen." Jeremiah certainly meant it, if only because he knew Nathaniel. Then, of course, he was looking for the spot that he had picked out, gesturing for the young man to come over with the testing supplies. "Just let me know which ones you want and I can gather them for you. I recommend orchids if you want a challenge." Making them bloom more than a couple times a year could be done but it was not easy and required the right conditions. kuropeco think we can ftb soon? pick up another RP after this > : 3

Nathaniel just wanted to bask in Jeremiah's garden; it was like a small place of respite from the rest of the world, open and flourishing and beautiful, everything bright and wonderful. He breathed it in again and then again, inhaling all of the familiar scents before he turned to Jeremiah again.
"I'd appreciate that," he said, a little ruefully, because Nathaniel was certain his achieving that would never happen, but the sentiment was nice anyway.
"Orchids, yes." Nathaniel pointed a finger at a patch in the corner. "They're beautiful once they bloom. Maybe some lilies at some point, when I have more space, or irises. Some irises smell like rootbeer, did you know?"
He stooped and picked up the basket again.
"All right," said Nathaniel, "Let's get to work."
