So Rob did recognize him. Ernst nodded a greeting back, but turned to the work at hand himself. He was able to pick it up again now, when Rob dropped it carefully, but wasn't sure how long he'd be able to keep that up. Lucky there was such a large group, then.
He grinned at the compliment and the summary. "Yeah, well, I have to admit I'm not the best at actually striking those birds down. Figure I can leave that to some other fine folk." He was at least contributing with this part, right? Sure, maybe using this beast of a shield just to hide himself and shovel snow out of the way was a coward's move...but at least he was surviving. And he could protect the people around him, as long as they didn't expect him to take down a bird himself.

Jan watched the others discuss what was going on with curiosity. When the subject of bird killing came up he was careful not to mention that he really really enjoyed it if he was honest, keeping that to himself instead. It'd be easier to push the line that he felt sorry for the birds.
"I hope there aren't hikers out on the mountain either." he said. "Or people we haven't found. This little plan could have quite the incidental death toll of people we don't even know are here. Making an avalanche is no small decision."
If one even happened, which he wasn't sure would, it was after all the end of summer and the snow was somewhat thin on the ground. Even back in the UK, it would have been at least somewhat drier than usual this time of year.

Tara bit her lip a little at the subject of taking down the birds. She'd been getting more efficient at it, but still couldn't help wishing there was a place they could move the birds where they would be able to live peacefully.
"Can we do more searches in the area for other lost tourists and hikers? Maybe staff that worked at the hotel and lodge might know if there are others unaccounted for?" Any digital records of bookings might not be accessible but... wasn't anything hand-written these days? She leaned down again to push the speaker up a bit further, but found herself slipping a bit in the snow and only managed an extremely short distance--while nearly falling face-first into the white stuff, much to her embarrassment.

Getting to his feet, Rob went over to Tara and helped her to her feet. "I'm sure they've done their research. You know, done some searches and made sure no-one was left in the lodge or on the slopes." He left unsaid any talk of acceptable collateral damage.
With a grunt he hefted the bulky speaker and lugged it a little bit further up the slope before collapsing and letting his burden fall to the snow. He leaned back in the snow and peered upslope. "The end is near, friends -- I think our goal is in sight."

"Not in sight enough for me," was all Mal said as he picked up the speaker again. He had a feeling he was getting indents in his hands and they would be in the shape of the speakers. And the sinking, somewhat unreal feeling that they'd be there for a lot longer than he thought.
After all, this was only the second trail. He'd for sure go and help with at least one more, unless they had all been moved by the time they finished this one. God (gods?) knew it was possible.
He set the speaker down and moved away from it, rubbing his fingers to try to get some circulation back. "This is like when the handles of shopping bags cut in too deep."

She gave Rob a quick, "Thanks," when he helped her up, and she brushed off some of the snow that had gotten higher up on her legs. His assurance that others had done the searches helped a little, sure but... "I'll ask around the hotel after we get these speakers in place... I just want to be sure."
She fidgeted a bit, really, really not keen to the idea to leave any proverbial--or even literal--stone unturned in terms of making sure people were safe as possible out here. Maybe she was being overly nervous about it, sure, but... could anyone really blame her?
Wanting some outlet for the forming nervous energy, Tara managed to hoist the speaker up into her arms and carry it... actually a pretty good distance this time. She was huffing and puffing when she finally had to put it down... but the end was in sight. She looked back to Mal with a grin. "Look, see, almost there! Just a little further on this one."
Glancing around, she frowned. "Anyone know how many other speakers have been set yet..?"

Davor had, eventually, moved onto another slope after giving himself a guilty little break. The guilt only increased once he reached the intermediate trail and saw just how much farther they'd had to go on this one compared to where he'd just come from -- but hey, look at just how far they had gotten. He trudged on upwards to reach them, hoping his approaching figure wouldn't be too noticeable and knowing it would be. Would they think he'd been slacking this whole time, only coming to help finish the job once they'd done all the hard work? Ah, how his mind reeled with worries.
Fortunately, someone had given him a nice chance to explain. Clearing his throat and trying his best to enunciate through his accent, Davor spoke up. "We have just finished Rabbit," he raised an arm to Ernst in greeting, his good arm of course, before trying to sidle his way into the rest of the group moving the speaker upwards. Figuring some help was better than just sheepishly playing the messenger, he put all his renewed strength into hefting the speaker the very last bit.

Help was help, regardless of whom it came from or when. So when another Chosen moved in to bring the speaker the last stretch, Tara was all grins. Especially since he brought good news! "So that's at least two of five now done, unless there's more finished?"
She looked about, unsure if anyone else knew the answer to that, but she rubbed her hands together and flexed her fingers to try and shake the sting and cold out of them. "I'm going to head back down and see if any of the other speakers still need to be moved up."
Progress was progress, though. They were getting stuff into position, and soon as it was all done... well. They could rest once they got back to the campus, she figured. Taking a breath to steady herself, she began a brisk walk back down the slope, hoping to hurry up and help out with another section. The sooner they got this done, the better.

Ahh, his dear friend. Ernst met the man with a grin, happy to let him join in on the, uh, fun. "Bunny's done, too," added Ernst, smacking his hand into Davor's happily in a clumsy high five, even if that was not quite what the man had intended with the wave. It was a little overwhelming how much progress they'd made - although it was a bit disappointing that there seemed to be such a small crew helping out.
It was what it was, he supposed. With any luck, everyone else was playing keep away with the birds. He leaned on the speaker for a moment, checking to ensure it was plugged into the power supply, before following everyone else back down. This wasn't really what he wanted to be doing, but the sooner it gone done, the sooner they could get back to campus and harass Hestia, or whoever, about what the hell had gone wrong. He'd have bugged Brynn, but she seemed pretty busy right now.
