She was...Tired. For some odd reason, her hits were beginning to get lazier, which didn't sit right with her of course. So Mercy managed to find a window to take a small breath before swinging once more, not surprised when she missed yet again. "Esto tiene que ser una broma de mal gusto ..." [This has got to be some sick joke] how else was she still missing this badly? Birds should not be this hard to swing at or hit. Maybe she needed her mountain dew and Doritos? That was how she got through some of her more challenging video game sessions...

For some odd reason, she STILL couldn't hit a bird! Mercy was almost ready to just pitch a fit as the birds scratched and pecked at her. BUT alas! Mercy decided she wouldn't give up, and so she kept on swinging, glaring at her hammer like it was the weapon's fault that her aim was bad.

Mercy was almost about to give up when she heard a splat and a squwak, to which she celebrated. "Hell yeah!!!!!!! Finally!" She laughed and swung her hammer with glee all the way to the hotel. She would worry about all the damned featehrs in her hair later, for now, she was so happy that she finally made it through after so many failed attempts! It was time to redeem herself and kick some a**!

[To the hotel finally!]

She wants to scream. It seems for every bit of progress she makes, another beak or talon impedes her. The birds seem too agile for her first attempt that thrash them with her whip and she reverts back to dropping between the beam and bookcase. Why hadn't she pulled someone aside and made a plan to cover their back if they covered hers?

Where's a fire-breather when you need one? Or a flamethrower. She'd settle for some matches and a little bit of lighter fluid if it meant flambéing one damn bird.

This was a bad idea, she thinks. She should've said no. She should've made a break for it and holed herself up in her dorm room. The more she tries, the more she thinks she might end up dead here. Oddly she just finds it hilarious in that her epitaph could read, "Chosen by the Gods only to end of gored by a demonic bird from Hell. Say no, kids!"

...it's kind of roomy under this couch, she decides. She'd thrown herself under it when another blasted bird had descended upon her. Maybe they're jealous about that whole Swan Lake ballet. Which really isn't her fault. Any placation she might try, lies of writing a great play starring them, however, is long out of contention. They are after all trying to rip her to shreds. She doesn't feel sorry for them one bit.

Yeah, she's back to wanting fire. An eagle-sized shish kabob sounds awfully appealing and satisfying the longer she fails to get out of this infested hellhole. She dashes forward and presses herself against the next piece of cover she can find.

Focus. She takes in a breath and for maybe the first time in her life says a little prayer. Whether it's to Hermes or to whoever else may be listening, she doesn't know. Just let her get out of her alive, she thinks. Please. With that said, she pushes off the wall and runs.

She ducks under the first bird that comes her way. It thankfully seems more intent on someone else--there's no time to see who or even feel sympathy--and she is able to continue on. That doesn't last; she knew it wouldn't.

This time she's ready. She lifts an arm and narrows her arms as she throws her whip towards the forthcoming bird. The leather slams into the creature's wing before the tip cracks against the feathers. She has no idea if it lets out a sound; she can only see that it's flight is disrupted as it veers wildly and she finally sees the door. Finally, the path is clear.

Marisol doesn't hesitate. She throws herself into a sprint. Around her is chaos but she doesn't bother to take her eyes off the exit. She can't afford to. And the thought scares her in a way. Behind her could be someone she knows--she's sure there isn't, somehow--but even if there was, she'd have to continue running. She has to get out of here. And as she throws herself against the slightly ajar door, she finally does. Now she just has to find the hotel.

Juliet nearly panicked, faced almost immediately with a monster upon first coming throguh the portal. She had wanted to be excited, to wonder at the beauty of the Alps, to be amazed she was really in Europe, but that was not what she was first presented with. What she was first presented with was abject chaos.

One dove for her, and she brought her staff around, swinging it hard - hard enough that, to her surprise, she actually knocked the bird out oft he way, clearing her way to bolt for the hotel.

Which was exactly what she did, because that would be the best way to find somewhere to regroup and figure out what exactly was going on here.

Mal tumbled out of the flames and into snow, and a hearth, and chaos. Which isn't entirely fair, because Mal doesn't mind chaos so much. It's different now, with a sword instead of the gun that he's used to. Different enough to make a difference.

And he's not used to targets that swoop down and attack with beak and claw, and so his first swing is a little wild, doesn't quite do what he wants it to do. He has to duck and doesn't duck quite fast enough, and feels a claw score his scalp.

So much for this fur coat, unless it's got some magical blood-repelling quality, or otherwise won't permanently stain.

"Son of a bi--" Mal started, catching another-- beak or claw, he didn't know, but it definitely got him again and he ducked away from it. This swing was worse than the last. He hadn't practiced nearly enough, apparently, and he resolved that when he got back to Michigan, he was going to go beat up a whole platoon of those damn dummies.

If he got back, maybe, instead of when.

Third time's the damn charm, he thought.

Mal managed (finally) to herd his group of civilians through the calf high snow and to safety at the hotel. He hoped it was fortified enough to do; the birds were not like the kind of thing he had imagined, even while he'd been shuffling step by step toward the uncanny fire in the hearth.

(Uncanny, he decided, was the word he was going to use for this kind of stuff. It was easier to think of.)

Diryas broke for the hotel as soon as he was across the hearth, deciding he would have to wait until later to be quietly amazed at the lack of harm from the fire. Sure, his trust in Hestia had been well-placed, but there was believing and there was seeing. And seeing had been really quite incredible. For right now, however, he was going to have to deal with the birds converging on those coming out of the portal.

He hoped Zebulon was behind him but couldn't afford to stop and check, ducking under fallen beams and clambering over larger rubble. The assault of the birds above him reminded him of a book he couldn't quite recall the name of, and he filed that away for later thought, too.

Was it just him, or was the addition of the birds making it even more difficult that it should be to find his way through the damage? Diryas had to stop and turn back from a couple of false starts when he found himself face-to-face with a beam he couldn't squeeze his frame around or a pile of chairs too unstable to climb over. All the while the birds were diving at him, leaving bloody cuts behind.
