Sylvia tilted her head, one side of her mouth pulling back. “Well, that’s good, I guess.” It still didn’t leave her feeling super confident or overly pleased with her performance, but she tried, again, to remind herself that this was her first real experience not just with a weapon, but with fighting in general.
Marisol was clearly a bit more practiced. She was hard to read, always shifting and moving, and Sylvia didn’t know how to read that yet, or really how to execute it herself. Trying to block anything was hardly on her mind, but even if she had been thinking about it, she could hardly succeed if she didn’t know where a hit was coming from.
Sylvia’s knee buckled when the next hit connected, harder than she’d expected, much harder than any of the hits she’d previously taken, and she grunted. Her eyes narrowed and she pursed her lips as she tried to even her breathing again, pushing herself back up with the staff in her hands. She stepped back to try and buy a moment of time before evaluating where she wanted to move next. She circled around Marisol’s side and went to strike her arm, but her grip faltered and she gave a heavy sigh.
“Oh, I wish I had any idea what I was doing. Why didn’t my parents make me take up fencing or something?” Which wasn’t exactly like working with a staff, she imagined, but at least it would have been something.Sylvia's Health: 26/50 Damage: (3 = 50%) 3 Weapon: Staff (balanced melee; base 6 damage)anemosagkelos [ FINALLY, almost a month later--! ; n; Sorry, love. ]

"What is it you do, Sylvia?" Marisol asked as the woman reacted far stronger to the tap than she'd expected. She straightened, giving little notice to the woman's attack as she considered how to help. There'd been no interest in teaching someone--hell, she was still learning herself--but now that she saw how out of her element the woman was... She had to at least try. And starting with finding out more about her, that might help. Marisol's Health: 35 - 3 = 32 HP Damage Dealt: 50% x 4 = 2 DMG

Sylvia was a bit taken aback by the question, pausing to give Marisol a curious glance. “Uh,” she stammered slightly. She wasn’t sure if this was a play to distract her (if so, it was working), or just an honest question. She liked to think the best of people, so she would assume the second. She had yet to actually tell anyone about her life before the Prytaneum, however, and for some reason she was feeling strange about giving out such information. It took her a moment to collect herself and get over it.
“Well, I’m a marriage counselor.” She stepped back from the next hit, luckily just a tap. She wasn’t sure how that might have become a curiosity of Marisol’s, but since she had shared, she was now curious. “And you?” Her face was concentrated despite her question as she gave her spear another try. Whatever it was she did differently, it seemed to work as she made a solid connection, a small smile crossing her lips.Sylvia's Health: 24/50 Damage: (5 = 100%) 6 Weapon: Staff (balanced melee; base 6 damage)

"Ballerina, principal dancer to be precise," she replied as she took in the information of Sylvia's profession. She grunted as the staff collided with her side. It was a much harder and more connected hit than anything precious and the weight behind it caught her off-guard. " Nice hit," she complimented. "Just act like this is a session. You're in control and you're helping me work out?" she suggested. "Or at least relax a bit. This is a practice room for a reason." Marisol's Health: 32 - 6 = 26 HP Damage Dealt: 200% x 4 = 8 DMG

Sylvia scoffed lightly, “Well, no wonder you know what you’re doing!” She did smile and give a nod of thanks when Marisol complimented her hit. It only took a moment for Marisol to recuperate and deliver her response – another impressive hit.
She chuckled a bit as she tried to shake it off. “That might be easier if my entire job weren’t centered around trying to avoid conflict.” Or, at the very least, resolving it. It wasn’t entirely the same thing. But perhaps Marisol had a point, about trying to feel more in control, at least.
A sigh, “I know, I’m just entirely out of my element. I’m not sure how to adjust…” Oddly enough, her next hit was fairly solid as well, and may have hit harder than she thought. She blinked, and almost commented, but she wasn’t willing to jinx it.Sylvia's Health: 16/50 Damage: (6 = 200%) 12 Weapon: Staff (balanced melee; base 6 damage)

"Conversation seems to be helping," she chuckled as the next hit nearly made her topple over. Rather than fight it, she went with the flow and fell into a one-hand cartwheel that let her land on her feet. Maybe that tumbling class had some benefits after all. She attempted a half hearted attack from the position but realized it left her at a vulnerability. With merely a skim of the practice dagger against Sylvia's thigh, she hopped back and returned to where she'd been previously. "Just remember, here, we can try new things and be terrible," she encouraged. Once they were out in a real battle, those options could leave them in dire situations. Sylvia shook her head with a somewhat bemused smile, “Apparently.” She was relieved when Marisol’s next hit wasn’t as intense as a few of her others, though she handled it much more gracefully than Sylvia would have. She’d probably have fallen over rather than figured out a way to roll. Perhaps she should practice that.
She nodded in agreement. It was true, this was a better place to experiment and try things out than anywhere. It would be a bad idea, usually, to try new things when they would have immediate consequences. Unless you were MacGyver or something. With that in mind, she decided to work on levels again and went for a lunge towards Marisol’s hip. Unfortunately, it didn’t go as well as her previous hit.
Maybe she needed conversation after all. “So, uh, when did you start dancing?”Sylvia's Health: 14/50 Damage: (2 = 50%) 3 Weapon: Staff (balanced melee; base 6 damage)

"As soon as I could stand," she replied, "though I think that happens when your mother is a dance teacher." A minor shrug. Honestly it'd started as a way to keep her from going on business trips with her father--in hindsight, it hadn't worked out like her mother expect at all. It'd benefited her though; she'd learned two trades. She ducked down, sliding forward on the ball of her right foot, to touch the dagger against Sylvia's hip. Then quickly popped back up and danced a few steps back. "When did you decide to be a therapist?" Marisol's Health: 14 - 2 = 12 HP Damage Dealt: 200% x 4 = 8 DMG

Sylvia chuckled a bit, “Yeah, that sounds about right.” Not that she would really know – neither of her parents were in such a field. Sylvia hadn’t attended ‘bring your child to work’ until she was late in elementary school.
Marisol had clearly recovered from her misstep earlier as she delivered a good hit to Sylvia’s hip, unfortunately finding the edge of the bone so that she was more affected than she might be otherwise. Sylvia jumped back a bit and rubbed at her hip for a moment, puffing out a breath, “I’m not really sure I remember a definitive moment.” She gripped her staff again and swinging it forward, making a good, solid connection with Marisol’s shoulder. “It was years of sorting out what I wanted to do, though helping people was sort of always in my repertoire.” A shrug, which turned into a sort of stretch as she rocked her head back and forth on her neck.
“I may have to give in soon. This is a great first run, but I’m… getting a bit winded.” And sore, frankly, but that wasn’t a surprise with an entirely new workout…Sylvia's Health: 8/50 Damage: (5 = 100%) 6 Weapon: Staff (balanced melee; base 6 damage)

Marisol straightened as she dropped her arms to her sides. There was a familiar burning in her lungs and she could feel a pressure on the tendons in her wrist that leaked into the knuckles of her hand. It wasn't dissimilar from a writer's cramp and she knew if she was beginning to feel worn, Sylvia was probably damn near exhausted. "I think we can call this an end," she responded, "I think in the end you even came out ahead." As for life, "It's always good to help people though of us, you're probably nicer than me." The laughter in her voice could've meant that was a joke or maybe she was just amused. Either way it did seem like a compliment. Once she was reasonably sure the other woman wasn't going to sucker punch her, she dropped to the floor and began to stretch. With one leg out in front, she bent backwards then took a hold of her foot and held it up behind her head. Needless to say, they probably weren't stretches the other woman should follow. When Marisol called the match, Sylvia took a deep breath and huffed it out, “Oh, thank goodness.” She clearly wasn’t used to this sort of exercise, and she was still a little frustrated that she wasn’t quite getting the hang of things. Some of her hits had been solid, but it felt more like luck than anything – it would take some time to feel fluid. Lots of practice, she imagined. For now, however, she wasn’t going to worry about that. On her next breath out, Sylvia bent at the hips and let her top half just hang there, gravity stretching out her spine and beginning to offer the delicious release of tension she’d been holding probably through the entire fight.
The comment-that-was-sort-of-a-compliment made Sylvia peek up briefly, one eyebrow lifted curiously. She wasn’t sure exactly how to respond to it. Marisol seemed like a perfectly nice person, though perhaps that was because they were on the same team (even if, in this circumstance, they were set up as opponents). Still, for the sake of curiosity, she asked, “What makes you say that?”
After another moment of hanging, Sylvia began to slowly lift herself up – which allowed her a view, finally, of the stretches Marisol was doing. Well, if she’d had any doubts about the woman being a ballerina, that certainly would have put them to rest. Sylvia had done some gymnastics when she was little, but she hadn’t been able to stretch like that in yeeears. “Man, I wish I could still stretch like that...” Just watching Marisol made her hurt a little bit. As it was, she reached her arms up and stretched from side to side, then folded her arms behind her head and stretched them as well, doing what few stretches she could.

"Years of being in the ballet world teach you to look out for yourself. It's not exactly the cutthroat business that television or movies want you to believe but it's definitely not a kumbaya place either," she replied once she was back into a split. "Unfortunately, I know all too well that someone's always waiting for me to slip up so they can take my place. And sometimes, you have to go on the offensive." Which was vague as hell. "Although I've never injured my competition like some dancers." Shifting into a side split, she leaned forward and rested her chin on her folded arms. It wouldn't be too long before she'd need to make a decision. There was no way she'd have time to be a ballerina and be here. And that wasn't even counting exploits. It was probably frowned upon to steal things from other chosens--she wondered if the Hermes gang could make a game out of it though--which would leave her little opportunity if she stayed. "A little time to work on limbering up and you just might be able to, if you're interested?" Marisol offered.

Sylvia wondered at Marisol’s response. On the one hand, she didn’t think that Marisol was a bad person simply because she looked out for herself and tried to make sure that she wasn’t being hunted down by her competition. On the other hand, she didn’t really know what the ballet world was like, and she couldn’t imagine what lengths Marisol could have gone to, to secure her own career. It was at least a slight relief to hear that she’d never deliberately hurt anyone. “People do that?” Sylvia wondered aloud, honestly a little flabbergasted. “How would you do that and get away with it?” Well, that was a bit of a forward question. She shook her head and waved a hand, “You don’t have to answer that.” She would remain a bit curious, but it wasn’t really something she needed to know.
Sylvia considered Marisol’s offer. It couldn’t hurt to try, she supposed. She was already trying to make sure that she kept to a decent schedule for exercise, to make sure she was ready for… whatever it was they would have to do here. Who knew, it might come in handy after all – Marisol’s grace was from her dancing, but Sylvia was sure that being limber and flexible was part of that. She shrugged at the other woman, “Sure, I suppose. It can’t hurt, right?” Well, it might hurt a little bit, but hopefully Marisol knew what she meant.

"You don't," she chuckled, amused, "if you want it to be effective, you need them to know who to watch out for." She considered for a moment, "My main rival, Pauline, had a plot to get me injured a couple seasons ago. Fortunately, for me, she was carrying on as a somewhat well-known man's mistress. I approached him and his wife, concerned for the poor girl's reputation, and she now lives in San Fransisco." That was her way of dealing with problems but there'd been a male dancer years ago that had taken the rivalry-ending-business to new extremes. "Usually things aren't that serious when it comes to rivalry, though." "Only if you tear a muscle," she teased. "We'll go slow to build up your limberness first though."

Sylvia frowned in consideration. Well, yes, she supposed that was the point of making threats or carrying them out. She was a little surprised that directors (or… whoever) tolerated the ‘competition’. Though, she supposed, they were all a part of the same culture, so perhaps it made sense. Her eyes widened some at Marisol’s story, but she couldn’t help but be amused, and ended with a chuckle. “Well, how very interesting.” Sylvia vaguely wondered how she would do in such a business. If she had to, she could probably fit into that atmosphere and do what she had to do to make it. But she was quite glad that the profession she’d chosen didn’t require such.
Sylvia gave a playful wince at the mention of a torn muscle. Those were absolutely no fun. She gave a smile and a nod, though, at the next comment. “I would appreciate that. I definitely don’t want – or need – to rush anything. I’m sure that if I get back into the habit of stretching it won’t be too long until I’m back to being nice and stretchy.”
