Alg nodded, watching, and got ideas of his own. The large book in his hands was turned over, concentrated upon, and then as if he were pushing it in at the corners, it seemed to get smaller. The book retained the same cover, the thickness increased, but it was now just a bit bigger than his normal notebook and able to be fit in his jacket. "Good idea." The professor smiled a bit. "Which means you should be able to make yourself a barrier.. for the rain if you like." He also motioned to the calculator, "With enough mathematical justification you can probably do things with that as well. I've always been more for words." His book was waved lightly.

Chester nodded, a fleeting smile his only outward response to his success. "I'm a fan of words as well, I'm just not very good at using them." He dropped his enlarged eraser back in his bag next to his calculator, standing straighter and squinting faintly at the rain. He still didn't think he could do the whole umbrella thing. Even though he had just technically created new matter from nothing by expanding a previously defined mass, there was something different about making an entirely new physical item.
He wondered if maybe he didn't have to, if he might find something else in his bag to facilitate this assignment, but beyond levitating a piece of paper above his head—a whole other impossible problem—he didn't think anything in there would help him.
Fine. He took a breath, thinking of how nice it would be not to have to go home with inexplicably wet clothing, telling himself that he was willful enough to make an floating plastic parabola appear out of thin air, and then he stepped out from under Algernon's magic in a rush, hands fisted at his sides.
For a few seconds, nothing happened. The rain continued to fall, spotting Chester's jacket. Then it merely stopped in a small circle above his head, spattering off of something solid that grew slowly outward. It was an unremarkable translucent grey disc that wobbled every so often, but it was done. His smile this time was larger as he looked up at his handiwork, and it remained on his face even when he tried to push it down.

"There you go," Alg nodded with a small smile, "You got something there. Which means you're on the right track. As you do more you should get more comfortable." Like exercising. "It'll be easier and then you'll barely need to think about it."

"Hm."
He understood what the man was getting at, but turning down thought, even unconsciously, was as foreign to him as, well, this place. It was going to take some time. At least his umbrella was holding up.
"That sounds promising. Thank you. For the warnings and... this." He gestured skyward, almost touching his shield, but he stopped himself just before he did, not wanting to ruin anything.

"No trouble at all," Alg chuckled, watching Chester seem to falter with doubt when it came to touching it. "Just remember that will - belief - are powerful things here. So the more you doubt the lass effective and easier for someone with a stronger will to break." The professor scratched his head idly. "Like Peter Pan... 'I do believe in fairies'?"

"I will. And I'll practice whenever I'm here."
Chester swallowed and nodded. Were there actually fairies? He kept the question to himself.

Alg, now that he had company, was less keen on practicing his own magic. The damp was hardly appealing as it was but he didn't have much solid to do here as it was. Unlocking the spells of his grimoire and practicing what he'd learned so far was a bit too personal to him to do in the company of others. "I think I'm going to head back- unless you need more help?" he wasn't positive he could bring anyone else with him with his current return spell.

"No, that's fine. I'll stay." The implication that Algernon could just leave whenever he liked was intriguing, but Chester knew he would find a way back home eventually, just as he had found himself here. If they parted ways now, he might even get in a little more practice before that happened.
"Thanks again. I'll see you, I suppose? At school?"

"Yes, of course," Alg chuckled, "They actually gave me an office this year. It's a closet but feel free to drop by if you need anything." The older man gave a wave and walked. He didn't cast his return spell until he'd turned a corner and was out of sight.
