“I’m not! I mean, well I mean I wasn’t, but Dad said…” He rubbed his neck looking troubled. “He mentioned you were, but that I’d have to ask YOU about it, and then Autumn got hurt and, I guess it just never seemed like a good time to talk to you about it.” He let his shoulders slump, eyes shifting away, ashamed and a little embarrassed. “… I was worried maybe I was I was making things weird between you two, I mean I’m not blood, I’m not even adopted… My mother is still around. Then, after I moved out you moved in, and that was…good, and I thought maybe it was because I wasn’t there anymore you know? It’s stupid… emotions can be stupid. It just seemed like things went better when I was…gone.”

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.Alg didn't say it aloud, not wanting to make Zac think he didn't believe him, but the young man's vehement defense rung a bit like Alg had hit the nail on the head. He and Jeremiah had talked about it too, Jeremiah knew how Algie felt, and at no point had he said he was uncomfortable with the other. Perhaps though, whatever Jeremiah did say to Zac, that the young man translated it wrong in his mind. "I think you're reading into things a bit too much." Alg gave him a small smile, "Nothing's weird. Jeremiah is still your father. And our relationship and how it happened had nothing to do with you being around- or not being around." Alg sighed, especially at him calling emotions stupid, "Emotions aren't stupid, we just sometimes have to parse them for our own biases and find the logic in a situation." He leaned back in his chair, "And the logical approach, instead of assuming and feeling bad for no reason, is just to come and talk to me if you have a problem."

He wasn’t protesting too much, he remembered the conversation well enough, but he could admit that while it had come off rather badly, especially given everything else he was dealing with, that the intentions might have been good, that the phrasing might just have been all too human. Dad’s…should not be so human, it wasn’t fair “Well, between Black friars and painting research, and Autumn talking me into moving in with her I’ll admit this has been some of the first free time. I mean, not including your business trip turned wedding.” He didn’t feel like adding that talking with others had done very little for his bad feelings on other fronts, it seemed like that dark mood had great hooks sunk into him and still pulled at him. “As long as you’ll consider telling me if I make you feel… off, or if I do anything that doesn’t sit well with you, alright?” “On a lighter note?” He said and fished for his note book. “And um, ignoring the interview with Mr. Kuroda… um, Ashdown! The other Ashdown, What have your experiences been like? What um, what thoughts do you have on it? Do you think there is a logic to why any of us get chosen or, anything like that?”

"I will tell you, so long as you promise to come to me-" Instead of letting some misconception or assumption of Alg's mood and views keep him away, "-with the same." Talk of the book, the interview, was an easy change. He leaned back, "I don't think any of us are special. I think we're victims of circumstance. Whether it be being in the wrong place at the wrong time-" Alg shrugged, "Or fate. Either way I don't think it's us so much as this place." Ashdown. "Otherwise why would the magic fade when we left?"

He nodded his agreement to talk. It made no sense to assume anything about each other. “That, painting that looks like Dad still bothers me a little.” He admitted. “That we might be caught in some kind of loop so long s we’re here. I, I did have a thought though.” He added. “The story that we got told about the dad picture, I was thinking, if that story is true even a little. What if he took the roll that, um, that maybe someone like Michael had.” He rolled his shoulders in a shrug. “I was thinking, wondering kind of, if we should talk to the um, Were’s, moon-shifters or, the proper term you know? What if one of them can take over what Michael was doing, I was wondering if that was important. I mean he –nearly- made it home, if we’d done things just a little different, I just wonder what we might have learned, but regardless it seems like it means that even if they did take over that roll that they could come home here again.”

Algie found himself in a very peculiar position. A position where he didn't quite want to share his full opinion, but at the same time in some bits of this, had essentially prevented himself from pursuing. "I was warned that I shouldn't pursue the artist. Me personally," Alg's face was a bit hard at the thought, for many reasons, besides that he was already fairly positive that he knew who it was even if it wasn't confirmed. He only knew one artist who hated him. The worst part was that if he was correct in his assumption, than he had no desire to pursue it either, "The artist will never be receptive of me. And never was... in any," his hand flipped, "version." He adjusted his glasses a bit and rubbed his head, "Why are we trying to fill the roles that have been laid down before if they always fail?" Learning from mistakes was one thing, but perhaps in their knowledge of things they were over complicating the truth? Sunny had said something similar to him, the more they knew, the more they inadvertently fell into the same patterns. "What's your ultimate goal Zac? Is this some other plan of yours to intervene on your father's deal? Michael's dead. He's not coming back. The deal has been broken- though I suppose he has come back-" In a very grim sense.

“Interesting.” He mused frowning slightly. He wondered why they were at such odds despite the iterations, but maybe there were parts of the…tapestry that just didn’t change. Grounding points for the weave. “Who warned you?” He asked tipping his head curiously. “I wonder if these rolls we keep failing in, are because, well, you said the artist never liked you and never will, what if its like, we’re set into particular, well, anchors.” He waved his hand trying to explain the thoughts. “I mean…what if it’s these anchor points that keep repeating that almost, steer us towards failure?” He shrugged. “As for plans, I mean to find the artist, I have a feeling one of our early guesses was right but, I don’t want to just say it and be wrong.” He rolled his shoulder. “ I mean we could guess, I think with all the information we have we wouldn’t be far afield but, it just feels like it’s deceptively simple. Like, too obvious, maybe it’s just the tip of an iceberg you know?” “And I know the deal is broken, Dad said, but we also don’t know the roll they play and, we don’t know why it was so important to –really- bring them home.”

"Sunny told me. She showed me some things as well," His frown was set, "And Heliodora and those kids knew exactly what they were in for- what's coming. Much more than you or I do. They've lived it many, many times." Heliodora would die. He'd seen it. She would be the last. Alg shook his head, "To ask someone else to sit and wait to die is a cruel fate. Someone less prepared, less adept. Even if they stay and keep the enemy caged- it's all a ticking clock. They are now a target. How would replacing them change the cycle? To swap them means it's not the individual at all- you or I or them being anchor points- and it's the role. Filling it, of course, plays back into the preset cycle." Algie's brows lifted, "Did you ever think Sunny in particular wanted them to come home for her own reasons? And we all have just been playing into it because she was the only one who'll tell us anything? Playing against out human instinct to value life? Because we-" Alg sighed, "We want to save everyone. And we've already proven that we can't."

“That’s also assuming that they know what they are doing when they enter into whatever puts them in these rolls.” Zac shrugged “And yeah, I do question the motives, She’s no more human than the…the burning man who seems to enjoy hurting people so damn much.” He shook his head frustrated at the very idea of the Burning man. “… I sort of wonder, I wonder if he or …it wanted a literal heart when he offered me to make sure Jer was free of his deal.” He shook his head. “I didn’t think that he’d hurt Autumn when I said no.”

"And I don't trust that Sunny isn't something in a nice looking package, with a couple dire pleas and some tears, genuine or not, that simply wants the enemy free." Alg flipped a hand. He didn't know. "What leads do you hope the painter gives you?" Alg was curious, getting away from Sunny, "Suppose they are just like us?" Clueless.

“If we find the paintings or drawings, maybe we can find out what the names were of the people that we were before. Maybe if we learn more about who they were, who… we were, we can see some of the mistakes they might have made.” He shrugged. “I mean, I don’t think anyone or, anything is apt to tell us anything flat out. Maybe it would be too easy if they did, or could. Maybe part of the point is we need to figure it out on our own. Free will, or the illusion of it at least."

Alg nodded, "A sound plan I'd say. Good luck. I hope you find what you're looking for." He idly turned his ring with a thumb, thinking a moment before continuing, "I think I've moved away from looking into the past. We can't change it and- too much is going on around us now. Too much we aren't prepared for. So I've been more pursuing that.. and preparing myself." It didn't sound too far off from what Jeremiah was doing, learning magic and practicing. "My magic seems to increase but not in a predictable useful way so I've been more proactive about it." Alg sighed, "I'm not as quick as your father is with it. You've gone to practice with him he said. How did it go?"

“… I made a light?” He said with a small shrug that said he was less than impressed with himself. “I mean, he made a better light, mine went out the first time I did it.” He crinkled his nose and the corners of his eyes followed suit as he reflected on this personal failure. “I’m sure you’re probably better at it than me too.” He grinned as he said this though, because he sincerely thought that would be true. Maybe it was the ‘British’ part, but there was just something about the two men that fit the idea of ‘Wizard’ rather well, even for a lack of long beards tucked into enormous belts. “… Short of becoming a, Moon-shifter, I do have to admit I think it would be sort of amazing to see someone pull off an…well, do like Professor McGonnigal. Though knowing our luck we’d get stuck that way.”

Alg laughed a bit, "Did you 'Lumos'?" He rubbed his face and hid a smile behind his hand, "Because I did too." Yes they were all nerds. "I think I could do without fur. Never been much for the appeal of being an animal. But maybe we need some suits of armor in the shop-" Alg glanced around, amused, "Bring them to life to defend the place on the other side.." His brows lifted a bit. It was a joke but the idea sounded pretty bad a**.

"Maybe my Lumos failed because I'm not British enough." He teased with a rogue's grin. "If you decide to animate some suits of Armor though, please make a stop word for them? I'd hate to find myself there and be chased around like I was in the set of some Scooby-Doo movie." He still thought being able to change at will would be on the cool side, but not so much about being tied to the moon. Then again he had some strange ideas on how to be useful to his friends and loved ones as well he thought to himself.
