The door doesn't respond to Zac jiggling the doorknob, but when Temperance knocks the door swings open, revealing the other-library. There was an endless expanse of the pink-tinted sky, misty rain still falling.

Temperance startled comically when the doors opened, looking from them to Zac and back with all the nervous twitch of a rabbit. The imposing building held sky - not the sky of outside, but a different one, although it continued to rain.

"I... I don't see any books, Zac," she said dubiously. Temperance didn't see any librarians, either, and maybe that was a good thing.

“…Huh.” Zac said looking at her in wonder, and then back at the open door.

“Thank you…Library.” He said to the building in general before blinking back to her.
“I… did say it was kinda different.” He said and took a cautious step forward hoping the door wouldn’t slam in his face. “Come on.” He said.

He was already fishing in his bag for the roll of twine and the chalk. He started with the chalk though, bringing out two thick pieces of colorful sidewalk chalk. “Pink or Blue?” He offered.

“Hopefully the library won’t be offended since it should wipe right off, but I thought since I’m searching for a particular book, I should be careful that I could find my way back again.”

Temperance could only assume Zac knew what the ******** he was doing, so she followed him, eyes tracking up to the sky. "Different... yes..." She looked back at Zac as he offered her chalk and tentatively took the pink one. It was a nice, soothing color, even if it was sadly too girly for her.

"Makes it feel like we've entered the Labyrinth of Daedalus, or, uh, Minos." Architect or king? Temperance never could remember. "W-wait the library gets offended?" She supposed it shouldn't come as a surprise, considering their locale, but it still did. Temperance realized that Zac had thanked the library.

"Uh, uh... thanks for letting us in, library...san?"

There is a faint rumbling, which then calms.

There are two paths open before Temperance and Zac: left, sporting many tumble-down shelves, and right, fairly clean and stable.

He flinched at the rumbling – hopefully that had just been these two paths opening rather than the library proving offended by the chalk.

He glanced back and forth between the two sides.
“Well.” He said aloud. “I’m guessing that I’m looking for an older book, so…” He turned slightly towards the far more tumbled down part.

“It, seems like what’s organized would be newer, right?” He glanced at Temperance as though looing for assurance about his current chain of thought.

The neat organized path seemed very, well, polite but at the same time it was other Ashdown.

Temperance looked down each path, then to Zac.

"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood. And, sorry I could not travel both and be one traveler, long I stood. Though I guess this is a library, not a wood, but the principle stands. Maybe we will be grateful for 'taking the road less traveled'?" She didn't know about newer books versus older books - a library could be going through reconstruction at any time. The tumbled-down path looked more.. organic, in a way she felt suited this place.

"What are you looking for?"

“Um” He started. “I’m looking for a particular book that Heliodora requested.” He admitted. It was true, though why she requested it he was leaving out for right now.

“I’m looking for the first time that all this happened. Like… the first time that Heliodora took her place in Other Ashdown and… and yeah.” He rolled his shoulders in something like a shrug.

She was absolutely right though, the divergent paths were like that poem. He really hoped they were making the right choice, but there was only one way to find out.

“Let’s go.” He nodded and pressed a chalk into her hand.
“Just in case.” He said, before heading into the tumble down path of books and tables.

As the pair progress down the path of tumble-down books, things only get more ramshackle. Doors hang off their hinges, the odd cloth tapestry lays limp and moth-eaten. The books are quite old, many of them in foreign languages. That doesn't matter in this library, though.

There is a green book that seems very familiar to Zac: A History of Ash Town. There is also a selection of books in what appears to be Mandarin Chinese that draw the eye, and one more whose spines bear the foreboding image of an open eye.

Turning in a slow circle, Temperance looked at all the books laid out before her. "I bet we're gonna be here forever." Everything was in utter disrepair, falling apart - she was worried if she mishandled a book, it would crumble into nothing!

"I have no idea who this Heliodora is, but we're looking for a history book, right?" Her hand hovered over the History of Ash Town and stopped. If they were looking for the beginning... just which beginning? Ashdown hadn't been in this spot forever. The world was millions upon millions of years old so... when was the beginning. She moved along, instead turning to the books in Chinese. Temperance didn't know Chinese beyond a very short semester where she learned exceedingly little, but this was a magic library.

Or something. She couldn't really explain her logic other than vaguely remembering that Chinese was among the oldest languages - that counted for something, surely. Gingerly, she pulled out one of the books and opened it.

“Not forever I hope but MAN

He stared at the books with wonder in his eyes. He let his own gaze flick between the familiar book title and the far more….eerie collection denoted only with an open eye.
The book it reminded him of at least, that was written well after the founding of Ashdown as far as he was aware. So while he reached for it for a moment, he drew his hand back and turned instead to the forbidding ‘open eye’ collection.

He knew all too well he might regret this terribly. But a collection also felt like it denoted a longer history.

“Wish me luck.” He said and picked out one of the books with the Eye on the spine.

No, not forever at all.

The Semblance of Unity
"I'll give it a try," someone says doubtfully, and as Temperance turns to look the library fades away for the interior of Blackfriars: they're on one of the higher levels, the bookplates noticeably Dewey and not Congressional at all. The speaker is a young man, almond eyes, small mouth, in an oversized sweater. "Someone's got to do something about Michael, anyway."

"I don't know that it's a good idea," says a dark-haired girl with a prominent nose and coppery skin. "Sunny said--"

"Does it matter what she said? We're all going to die anyway, and you know it--"

Heliodora is there, on two feet, with masses of curly dark hair.

"So the stars are fixed, immobile," she says. "So they're going to... fix me in place?"

Michael nods. He looks much better when not a water-logged corpse. "I don't know what it means, though," he says. "If Adoelle's the crown..."

"Crowns can pass between people," says Heliodora. "Like swords can."

It was still so strange to see moments he hadn’t been present for, to be looking through something, or someone else’s eyes. What he’d learned from that though made his stomach sink more than a little.

The stars were fixed.

What Heliodora had added to that though, that the sword, and the crown could pass between people? That made him think, there wasn’t perhaps enough to form any solid thought that he could work for yet but it certainly planted seeds.

If this wasn’t ‘the’ book, then he had to be close, right?
“I think, I’m actually maybe close to what I need.” He said softly, he wanted to make sure Temperance knew that.
“If you, um, saw anything interesting, we should talk about it too, I mean, it might not be anything but it might be too.”

Temperance startled, jerking back a bit. She turned and was no longer in the library, but Blackfriars. Her gut twisted. Of all places, it had to be here. She wasn't sure this was what they were looking for - hell, if what Zac needed came up and bit her on the nose she doubted she'd recognize it. Pretty useless, she thought sardonically.

"I don't think this is it, Zac..." Somehow his voice filtered to her through the static of the memory. Maybe he was on to something. She could close her book but... who was Michael and Sunny? Temperance flipped a new page.

Temperance turns the page, but the memory only replays. It seems she'll have to try another book if she wants more information.

The next book in the series lays atop a book entitled Of Anglo-Saxon Runes and next to a small pile of what appear to be very shiny gemstones.
