Bo's shift in mood had been obvious, but any evidence of it was gone again as soon as Ellis noticed. He hadn't known what sort of reaction to expect, but this almost seemed... tame. Maybe they could all be friends after all.
"Yeah! We should." Ellis smiled, jumping a little in his seat as the bell marking the end of intermission began to ring. "I'm looking forward to it."
They were both quiet for the remainder of the break, sitting in what Ellis could only assume was companionable silence. Ayuu had two more numbers in the second act, a harp piece about halfway through and a solo during the finale.
And then what?
Ayuu had obviously meant for them to meet or ze wouldn't have gotten them seats right next to each other. Even though he had just agreed to hang out with Bo at some point in the future, he hadn't meant tonight.

Ze hadn't meant for them to meet tonight at all.
Still backstage, Ayuu watched the geist and the imp make their introductions, feeling none of Bo's ire and all of Ellis's nerves. When there were no raised voices or obvious disagreements, ze calmed a bit, failing to notice Bo's scowl as the lights dimmed once more and ze ducked back behind the curtain.

The rest of the concert went off without a hitch, and as he sat there in the cool, dark auditorium, Bo began to calm. To think without his brain buzzing.
What had Ayuu thought would happen tonight? Had ze truly meant to introduce him to a friend...that they could all be friends? He sighed. It might have been a little loud considering how the litch to his right glared.
The worst part was, before tonight they could have been. In theory. In truth, even that had been impossible, he just hadn't known it yet. Why was this all so... frustrating?
When the grimm took the stage for the second time, Bo held perfectly still, watching zer graceful movement and wishing things were different.

He couldn't help himself. When the show was over, Ellis shot to his feet and clapped until his hands tingled. It was only after the cheering had died down that he took a look at the geist. Bo was watching him, quiet and sedate, though when Ayuu approached he brightened immediately.
Ellis, already standing, beat him to a welcome.
"That was lovely! It was... well... very beautiful." After a moment's pause, he leaned forward, gathering zer into a hesitant hug. The grimm stiffened, the geist sighed, and Ellis felt as though he had opened a door that none of them would easily close. And he still didn't understand why.

By the time the imp and the grimm parted, Bo was standing as well. He was exhausted, his brain was full, and for the first time in his life he didn't want to speak. He tried anyway.
"You already know I loved it," he told Ayuu, smirk everpresent. "But I'm a little tired, so I'm gonna head back to the dorms." He stood tall, forgetting his current situation as he recalled another. "Oh, yeah! I think I'm a senior now! I handed in my last junior assignment right before I got here!" He swallowed and slumped slightly when Ellis smiled at the news, hating the way he soaked in that approval and held it close without thinking, as if the imp cared at all.

"That's great news!" Ayuu replied, the tension in the air around these two making zer fur stand on end. It wasn't that ze hadn't appreciated Ellis's hug, it had just been... a hug! From Ellis! And now Bo was slumping and everything ze had thought about them not righting was thrown into question. This might not have been a proper brawl, but there was more going on here than ze knew what to do with. And it was all zer fault. Ze reached out a paw, touching Bo's misty forearm.
"I'm going to go as well, after I check on a couple of my guests." Ayuu turned to Ellis, including him in zer farewells. "Thank you guys so much for coming though. I'll call you both. I promise."
And then ze was gone, off to catch up with Ela and Sothen.

Ellis felt horribly after that, but it was too late to take back what he had done. He didn't even have a chance to say goodbye to Ayuu before ze was gone, and when he turned to try to find something, anything to say to Bo, the geist's forced smile was a glare again.
"It was nice—"
That was as far as he got. Bo was gone.
