“We can absolutely start with kibble time.” He grinned. “I’m sure the will like you, its just seeing who feels most comfortable with you. I… It’s maybe silly but I feel like you know when a cat chooses you.” He shrugged looing sheepish. “But yes, we hold books all the time, so I see no problem holding one we might have to put back! I’m sure you’ll be an amazing cat-mom too, I can tell you like them, and you seem really earnest about learning about them!” “Here… I’ll take one of our business cards, and I’ll put down the address of the vet we use.”

She nodded vigorously, absolutely convinced that he knew what he was talking about. He was an expert, obviously, and she'd listen attentively to anything he could teach her. "Yes! I believe you! I really hope one will choose me, I mean, it'd be eminently heartbreaking if I went both to kibble time and the shelter and no-one even liked me," she looked intensely worried as she revealed her biggest fear to him. "Cats are good at reading people right? Maybe they won't think I'm good enough, because I don't know anything." The warm weight of Mogget helped bring her back to the moment and away from her worries; carefully, she adjusted him so he wouldn't slip and sent the kitty a warm smile. Oh, she really did hope a cat would choose her. "Cheers, that would be eminently fantastic!" Trusty vets were important, definitely. "Should I call the store to set kibble time up or do you, um, want my number?"

“Cat’s are good at reading people.” He agreed. “But I think Mogget is a good example for how you’ll get judged, it doesn’t mean that all of them will act like him mind you, but one of them will decide that you are the perfect human for them.” He nodded. “Here…let me give you my number.” He said and fished in his pocket, pulling out a little notebook and jotting a number in it – paused, then added a second before pulling the page out. One was Zac with a number; the other was ‘Vet’ -Doctor Dow and a number. “Sometimes the vet gets some animals that are dropped off because they got hurt, but have no owner. It’s another good place to meet little furry friends.

That was right; Mogget had liked her straight off, even though had someone asked her before she set a foot in the store she would've sworn that no cat would. But she'd been proved wrong and in the best way possible - it occurred to her that perhaps her fears over not being chosen might be proven wrong as well, as long as she had the courage to try and challenge them. So courageous she'd try to be, for the sake of having a fluffy, soft kitty of her own! She almost automatically reached for the note with numbers before remembering that she had her arms full of precious cargo; "that sounds good - there are so many options I never knew about! There was no reason to look into it when I knew I couldn't get a pet anyway, but now all the roads are open and..." she sighed happily before continuing in a slightly more sheepish tone; "How do I set Mister Mogget down safely so I can pocket the paper? Well, bag it since I have no pockets in this dress, but bag it sounds a bit off I reckon."

“Here.” He said with a grin, and carefully stepped forward, dropping a shoulder to let the cat twist in her arms and climb onto his shoulders where he stood, a slight precarious balance as he twisted and settled himself. “Just like so.” He grinned. “Better?” he said and offered her the slip of paper again. “Otherwise, when you have one of your own just crouch to let them jump down, or set them down if they don’t decide to jump first. You’ll want to mind the back claws if you’re not familiar with them, they aren’t as sharp as the front ones but they can really pack a punch”

Isobel gave a small spontaneous clap of joy at seeing Mogget's maneuver; "He's so smart! And you two are so, what's it called, well co-ordinated? You know the meaning of each other's moves so well, it's absolutely brilliant." She clasped her hands, twisting them in their own grip in an unconscious gesture, but still smiling widely at Zac and his cat. They were absolutely marvellous! She was sure that even if she looked, she'd find no-one more exemplary of the bond between human and cat than those two. "Yes, cheers!" Untangling her hands, she reached out and took the paper, giving it a quick look before safely stashing it in her bag for later use. She was nodding along to his explanation as she did, storing it in her mind for later use; "that seems like a good idea, yes." Then she took a deep breath and did her best to look Zac in the eyes so she could properly impart the genuineness of her words to him: "and thank you so very much for letting me hold Mister Mogget and all the help and encouragement on getting a cat myself and holding the book for me and the vet number. I, åh, I don't know if that's normal for working in a bookshop or not, but it really helped me find the courage needed for getting a pet!" She looked serious and steel-set, almost as if she expected him to disagree with her, but the words had come from her heart. She just hoped they'd come across properly and she hadn't bungled it. endejester I almost wrote 'but the words had come from her kokoro'.... /gazes into the distance/

“I know that you’ll run into some people who are more gruff, but I think you were incredibly polite and very nice, so I think you’ll find most people react the same way I have, I really do.” He nodded to encourage here. “Come on, Let’s get you the books you actually came in for as well and then we can get you checked out and I’ll give you a bag that will make –everything- easier to carry.” He gave her a wide smile. She really was sweet, he’d have to see if he couldn’t get her time to Meet Autumn, he thought that Isobel seeing the ‘birds’ and things that appeared as Autumn sang would …one day at least, knock her socks off. But he had no intent of exposing her to the stranger side of the town before he had to.

Would they? Isobel wasn't sure, even with his assurance, but it was a nice thought at the very least. And kind of him to say it - she gave him a genuine smile, cheeks slightly blushing, and was very glad she'd worked up the courage to ask him for help instead of just trying to find what she wanted herself. Speaking of... "Yes, that sounds splendid!" She bounced slightly on her heels and clasped her hands once again, eager to follow. "I was thinking if you had some books on gardening? Beginner's, please, or maybe some practical magic books. Or magical creatures? Oh or maybe folk-legends or something. Well probably not all of that at once, but yes..."

She might have caught a momentary flicker on his face, a change of emotions that he quickly brushed away when she brought up the practical guide to magic. He was tempted to offer her the actual book ‘Practical Magic’ but that would be rude. “You’ve got it!” He nodded. “Let’s start over here in the gardening section. After that we can go to the Occult section and see if we have anything that fits, if not I’ll take you over to Folk lore and mythology, alright?” He turned and led the way, Mogget making his own way by jumping to the top of a book shelf and doing a cat-jog towards the secions mentioned before.

"Yes sir!" She gave a quirky little salute before catching herself - had that been too weird? Åh, she had no clue. But it was too late now and steeling herself to be more socially savvy in the rest of conversation, Isobel went to follow after Zac. She could with honesty say this was the best store visit she'd ever had; Zac had been so nice and Mister Mogget was absolutely magnificent, the best and fluffiest and cutest cat she'd ever seen, bar none. She hadn't even thought of a pet since moving, but now there was a burning want inside her for a fluffy kitty of her own. One that would cuddle with her every day and purr and knead in happiness! She could only hope she'd be able to persuade her mum and then come back to Bibliophile later for kibble time - because surely there would be a cat out there that would choose her. Surely.
