Table 5

A laugh swept through her lips before one corner hitched up in a smirk, as she turned towards the voice. Blue hair wasn't exactly what she'd expected but it looked good on him, she had to admit.

"Looks can be deceiving," she teased, precisely because it was a cliche. One that always garnered laughs and was written off as a joke. "What would yours say?"

Table 8

"You need to win the lotto to buy the apartments I'm thinking of." Asher said it breezily: squinting at Mal instead of Dahl as he did, like he was slowly working his way through a map of the area to narrow it down to a specific block.

"They're building luxury places all along the high line. That's where I want to be; not too far from the marke -- and with a view, high enough up to see the river. Does that past your test, professor?"

Gretta - Table 4

Gretta took a seat and immediately dished herself up a plate - it was loaded mostly with vegetables and chicken, though she absolutely ladled herself a bowl of soup and took a piece of crusty bread.

She poured a glass of wine (for curiosity's sake) as well as some lemonade.

Gretta picked at her food while she glanced around the room.

Table 5

He gave the ball another spin as he transferred the points of contact from his palms to the tips of his fingers as he pretended to deliberate on the question. Smiling with his eyes and mouth, he stared her down as he answered, "Everything has a price." Followed by a perfunctory wink.

He settled down and nodded his thanks to the staff that filled his water glass. He is surrounded by the new crop of Chosen and it was a mixed crowd. New connections and experience to harvest.

Table 8

"Not a professor," was all Mal said, gesturing with his empty fork. "Just curious. Do I have to spin the beach ball now?"

It was a bit of a juvenile thing-- beach balls? But it'd keep conversation moving, at least. He caught sight of Gretta at another table; he'd have to go over and say hello to her later, maybe, or at least during dessert.

Table 8

"Not true - could have been born into money, I suppose." Clearly Asher had not. Dahl hadn't either, for the most part, but he had it now.

He turned to Mal. "If the beach ball calls to you," he said dryly.

Table 8

"Ay," he said, and rolled his eyes before putting his fork down and reaching for the beach ball to spin it. "Heaven forbid I break tradition so quickly."

He spun it with a neat flick of his wrist, and read the side it came up on. "Would you rather spend a week in a space station or an undersea lab?"

Mal stopped, frowning at the beach ball. "I'd rather neither, but if I absolutely had to, space it is. I'd rather explosive decompression than compression, I guess. And the view would be better, or maybe clearer?"

Table 8

"...I really hope these aren't primer questions." Asher shook his head as he stabbed at more food, still leaning in on one elbow -- his eyes narrowed at the idea. Apparently he didn't want to live in either location. "But at least the undersea one's on earth..."

Table 8

"My preference is to go pop rather than splat, that's all." Mal shrugged at Asher, and nodded at Dahl. "What about you? Space station or under the ocean?"

Table 8

He took a bite of something: a beet, maybe. Whatever it was, it was disgusting. He swallowed it anyway. "Can't I choose neither?" To be honest, Dahl had no preference. He just didn't feel too strongly about most things. Idly, he reached over and rolled the ball, tapping one side.

"Would you rather be blind or deaf?" He paused. "Easy - deaf, though I'd prefer no smell even more." His job had dealt with listening and hearing, but it was all about sight. And touch, he supposed. Dahl wasn't exactly being scintillating company, he knew, but he felt off-kilter, out of his element.

Zebulon - Table 4

"s**t, this is a little fancy, innit?"

When Zebulon entered The Hearth, he had to admit he was a little stunned. This was their dining hall? Or not. The name hardly seemed appropriate. This was better than any dining hall he had been in any school ever, and well, he had been in a lot of schools. That came with the whole doctorate territory.

He turned towards Diryas after a moment, face cracking into a grin before he briskly walked to settle himself at a nearby table. Eagerly, he snatched at the choices that were offered to him. He grabbed chicken, potatoes, vegetables of all sorts, bread, and even a little bit of soup despite not being a soup fan; he was probably overdoing it, but in the moment, Zebulon didn't seem to particularly care.

He also seemed to be a little too involved in the selection of food to notice the beach ball, at least at the moment.

It was while he was eating a piece of bread that he caught their table mate looking around the room. If she looked in his direction, he lifted an arm and offered a, "Hey," and a friendly wave.

Mathilda - Table 11

Mathilda gazed around the room adoringly. Though she had seen it during the tour, it was even more beautiful now. There were several tables with occupants, but Mathilda sat down at an empty one, towards the end. Even when there wasn't food being served, she wanted to be here. Glancing at the food, she added some potatoes to her plate. Looking down, she held her necklace with the symbol of her Chosen God in between her fingers.

"Ares, huh."

She had become docile, these past few years, out of her game. And so far, she had only seen males being Ares chosen. It was interesting.

"To each there own. Guess I gotta make the best of this."

Looking at her pendant again, she took a bite and glanced up at the beach ball.

"The heck is that?"

Table 11

"They're icebreakers."

Isaiah settled into the seat next to Mathilda and began to pile food onto his own plate. His metabolism was one that required constant intake, and he was always happy to oblige.

"Seems like the staff here really wants us to get to know each other." After he'd taken his first bite, he reached for the beach ball then thrust it towards Mathilda so that she could read the question he'd chosen for her.

Table 8

"I'm with you completely." It was kind of impressive to watch Asher eat; working his way methodically through everything in front of him and then dropping more onto his plate. No faces here: apparently Asher ate everything.

"I don't know what I'd do with myself, blind, and deaf -- well, I'd probably end up getting crushed under an eighteen wheeler or something." He tipped his head a little, eyes dragging more solidly onto Dahl to consider the way he moved, his quiet grace, and maybe that finally kicked him a little. Asher sat up just a little straighter, arm sliding off the table. "It's a bum deal either way."

Table 5

"That, I can agree with," she returned with her own wink. She turned back to her plate, taking a small bite of chicken and chewing politely. The food was nearly as good as her father's home cooked meals. Once she swallowed, she turned to her dinner companion.

"I'm Marisol Whelan," she introduced herself, "a chosen of Hermes." She had a feeling he wasn't chosen by the same god as she was but she didn't want to make a guess quite yet. Instead, she paused and waited for him to introduce himself.
