Shiranai was fascinated by Aiyana, the first real stranger that Shiranai had the opportunity to speak with. While she had met many strangers in her life, both visitors to see her herd leader and stranger she had stumbled upon in her travels, she had never really spent much time speaking with them. Part of the reason was her own natural inclination for solitude while another was the warning voice in the back of her head (that sounded suspiciously like her mother-hen of a brother) that warned against strangers. She was slight of built and a poor runner and as a result would not do well in attempts to flee danger or, goodness forbid, defend herself. It was nice, though, knowing that a kind mare like Aiyana could live on her own (or near enough it appears) and still be well.
"Have you been in this area long?" she ventured to ask. "I imagine it would be hard to travel very far being, well," she stopped and blushed, gesturing to the mare's heavily pregnant belly.

Aiyana listened to the birds in the trees, letting the other mare think of what to say next. It was really a beautiful day today, she really thought it was a good day to just relax. When Shiranai finally spoke, she thought about how long she had been here. True, it had been long enough that she was pregnant, but not long enough that they had finished setting up roots here. They were still working on getting people for their herd, something that she knew would take a little more time.
"We have been here a bit, but only a little longer than I am pregnant. I look forward to when there is lots more life here. You are right though, I cannot go very far at the moment, being pregnant. How long has your family lived where you do?"she asked the other.

Shiranai wondered how long pregnancy were meant to last; none of the mares had been pregnant in so long that she had never really had a chance to consider it. Several of the stallion at home had mates who lived with their own families and she knew, almost blushing at the thought, that Moir was hoping for foals soon but they had yet to be so lucky.
Shiranai hummed at the question, relaxing more as she spoke of home. Aiyana was so patient and calming that it was easy to speak with her. "For as long as I can recall," she admitted, albeit sheepishly that she did not know the exact time. "Mother said that they have lived on the mountaintop for as long as she had been with them. Orchu, our herd leader, had already had grandchildren my mother's age by the time she had joined. It has been many years since then, though, and the herd gets larger and larger each year." It had stagnated for awhile, shortly after Shiranai's birth when Orchu had taken an extended trip to warmer weathers for his health. The herd had been left under the guidance of his second-in-command Auri, who was as brave and true as a mare could but but much more cautious of strangers. "I was one of the youngest until recently," she admitted. "I think that is why my older brother treat me like I can break at any moment."

Aiyana listened as Shiranai spoke about a little bit about her own herd, it had definitely existed longer than she has been alive. Her family's herd had been like that too, around for quite awhile...before disaster had taken them. She took a calming breath, willing herself not to cry as she thought about it, as she had wept before. Her eyes did get a little misty, however, looking upon the younger mare with a soft smile.
"I am sure he just wants to make sure that you are safe. My own brother, he is the same way. Ever since we met, he has been looking out for me, making sure I am happy. It sounds like your herd is one of those that have been around awhile. Hopefully you will be able to have more children there soon enough, so it can grow once more,"she spoke.

Shiranai had done something wrong. She tried not to fidget but noticed the obvious forlorn turn Aiyana's mood had taken as she had spoken about her family. She tried not to let it show, however, not wanting to point out the sudden shift of mood. Shiranai disliked seeing others in a poor mood and her own social awkwardness showed through in these times. She never knew how to handle herself and she always feared she would make the situation worse.
She soldiered forward. "I have four siblings actually, and Silhouette isn't even the oldest but he's the most protective, for sure. I don't get to see my other siblings that often," she admitted, a little sad at the thought. Mother and Father didn't live together and much past adulthood, most of their siblings had scattered or chosen to live with one or the other.

Aiyana caught the small fidget, even if the other tried not to let it show. She wondered if she had mentioned something that she shouldn't have. Running over her words in her head, the pink haired mare realized she probably saw the tears clinging to her eyes. She gave the other a reassuring smile, letting her know that it was alright.
"If you are worried about my tears, please do not be. You did nothing wrong, I hope you know that. I was crying because the conversation about herds reminded me of my parents and other loved ones. I lost them when I was a child, so had wandered the lands for quite some time. My brother and my new brother are the first family I have had in awhile. I do hope you will get to see your other siblings again, family is very important,"she assured.

Shiranai ducked her head out of reflex, embarrassed that she had been caught. She had never suffered a real loss in her family and while she rarely saw her father and her siblings, she knew it was only a matter of a few days walk to their lands had she so chosen. Hearing about Aiyana's father, however, made her consider visiting them more. She held off on it for awhile, knowing that some--one--of her siblings held a grunge against their mother, and the resulting meetings always came off stilted and awkward when the topic came about. However...
"I'm sorry," she managed to mumble, unsure of what other response to give to the mare. "But I am glad that you have found brothers along the way. I don't know what I would do without mine." Despite all her grumbles about her elder brother, she knew he loved her dearly and she, the same. "Can you tell more more about your brothers?" she asked, curious about the other's family. She had already spoken at length about her own brother.

Aiyana's pale green eyes held a gentle warmth to them as she looked to the other mare. She knew the other had not meant to make her cry, she had just been innocently talking about her herd. The pink haired mare hoped that the other would get to spend more time with her family. She felt Yamka lower one of her wings to gently pat her cheek quickly. A soft neigh of thanks came from her, letting her familiar know she appreciated. When the other mentioned brothers, she wondered where she got the idea she had more than one, when she realized what happened. The mare sweatdropped, she had accidentally made a mistake when she was speaking.
"Opps, I seem to have messed up with my words, please forgive me. I meant to say my mate and my new brother, silly me. To answer your question, Hoshi is very protective of me. He wants to make sure I am happy, that is very important to him. He and I met when we both stopped to get a drink. We got to talking and seemed to connect pretty quickly, like we had known each other our whole lives,"she spoke fondly.

Shiranai couldn't help but peer curiously at the bat, silently finding its little wings absolutely adorable. Her herd had no flying familiars, only a multiple of wolves and, of course, Rami. "Wherever did you meet your familiar?" she asked, feeling bold. Aiyana had been so accommodating of her questions and so kind that she hoped she wouldn't mind another question. "She just seems so wonderful of a companion."
Shiranai offered a smile and a small, soft tinkering laugh at the mare's misspoken words. "Oh, that is no worry. It happens to all of us." Shiranai herself did not speak enough for it to be an occurrence but many of the boisterous members of her extended family would be quite infamous for their mistakes. "That is a fortuitous meeting then. I can't imagine meeting someone and feeling that instant connection like that."

Aiyana saw Shiranai's eyes look in the direction of her hair, figuring she was looking at Yamka. Her next question to her seemed to confirm her suspicions, which brought a smile to her lips once more. She wondered if the other had ever seen a familiar like her's before. The pink haired mare knew that many Soquili had a bonded familiar like she had, each different in their own way. Both Hoshi and Star had birds for their bonded, while she had a bat. She was just about to speak about her meeting with her friend, when she heard the other mare laugh. She thought it was quite a musical sound, which seemed to widen the smile on her face. Then she waited as the other spoke a little more, her own head nodding softly.
"Yes, I would say it was quite a wonderful encounter to have. You see, I had never had a brother before I met him. Back with my family, it had been sisters, no brothers when it came to siblings. So it is nice to have a big brother to look after me, even if I am an adult now. My mate is protective of me too and we connected pretty quickly too. As for Yamka, I had hidden myself in a cave when I was but a filly. She called the cave home at the time, so she wondered why someone had come into her home. When she came to investigate, I explained that I was scared, so she stayed with me,"she recalled.

Shiranai eyes the soft furred bat and had the irrational urge to nudge the small creature. She perked up at Aiyana's story, her ears flickering back and forth in interest. "You have lived quite the interesting life then," she commented, nodding. She did not comment on why the other mare might have been hiding; the world could be a scary place as Shiranai was slowly finding out for herself. Perhaps Silhouette's worrying wasn't just him being overprotective. "That is quite fortunate that you managed to stumble onto a familiar like that. Wolves are the most common familiar of my herd, though our Elder's companion is a bear."
Rami the bear suited the silent Orchu, Shiranai always thought, though Shiranai had a personal fondness for another familiar that she decided to voice. "My favorite is a wolf named Nana though. She follows around Demon, another member of our herd," she explained. "But she is the sweetest wolf. She will come and nap by me sometimes in the afternoon when her partner isn't around," she chirped, uncharacteristically cheery at the thought of the small wolf huddles against her side.

Aiyana could tell from the mannerisms of the other that she was enjoying the story, even before she spoke again. When she thought about it, Shiranai was right, she had had quite a life. All of it had started the night that changed her life forever, the night her family was taken in a fire. She looked up into the sky for a moment, thinking of them again, as sometimes happened. Taking a deep breath, she brought her head back down and focused her pale green orbs on the other mare. Listening, she nodded when the other spoke about how advantageous it was to find her familiar. Then the other spoke about a wolf that she liked and she could tell how much she liked the wolf.
"I agree, having Yamka really helps me a lot. She can get a bird's eye view for me and check things when I cannot. It sounds like you really like your herdmate's wolf, it sounds really nice. Maybe you can find one of your own, you never know what might be out there,"she pointed out to her.

Shiranai nodded in agreement, a smile on a face, and she knew her mannerisms were loosening the longer she talked to the other mare. Aiyana was simple so comforting and friendly that Shiranai couldn't help but relax a little more into the sweet smelling valley and enjoy the tickle of fresh grass against her sides.
"That does sound very helpful," she agreed. "I had often wondered what it would be like to fly, myself. Do you not think it would be quite marvelous? None of my family has wings, though," she said. "But I have always managed that the view would be quite beautiful from above."

Aiyana was glad to see the other seemed to be calming down, able to enjoy the conversation. She wasn't sure if it was the beauty around them or just the fact of her own demeanor. Well, whatever it was, she was also enjoying the company of the others while the boys were temporarily away. When the other spoke about flying, a smile came to her lips once more. Flying was a wonderful thing that she certainly enjoyed getting to do. Being pregnant, she couldn't really do it a lot right now, so she definitely missed it right now.
"It is a wonderful feeling being up in the sky, if you ask me. The wind in your mane and tail, being to see a view that others usually cannot. I love flying, I kind of miss being able to do it more often right now,"she answered.
