As she marked, as she brushed the glyph onto the surface of the pendant, it faded from the air. Gloom was laying on her, head on his paws and watching with glowing eyes. "It is good," he told her, his tail swishing from side to side slowly. For once the shadowed creature did not seem all that young and childish. There was knowledge in his eyes, in his voice, when he spoke next. "The dust binds it, makes it mean something." Gloom slid from her lap to the jar that read shelter. "Spread it across it," the pendant and the ink, "then hold y'hand over it. Gloom will help, will show y'the magic."

Breathe out.America picked up the little jar and carefully tapped its dust over the wet ink. Inhaling deeply, she held her hand over the pendant.

Gloom's form shifted and grew, something a little larger than he had been before. His body, dark and shadowy, pressed up against America's arm. His head laid across the back of her of hand. "There is safety in shadows," he said quietly. The restaurant darkened, as if the shadows were listening. "In y'mind think about shelter, about safety, about y'secret place, y'safe haven." His shadows curled around America, a cool trickle against her skin. Gloom was bolstering her, his magic pushing and enveloping her own, encouraging it to bubble up and burst out. "Push it into the pendant, into the glyph."

The darkening room barely even registered, it felt right that the shadows would deepen and surround her. Gloom's words filled her head, summoning up the part of her that ran and hid, that sought out the secret, hidden places to feel safe. To feel like she had a place, her own, safe from all the hurts, large and small, that other places had to offer. It is exactly large enough, perfectly hidden, and it is dark but that has never held her fear. America can feel her magic for the first time, moved by Gloom's and building and building into a small, powerful focus. The girl exhaled and pushed that power and those feelings into the pendant, her gaze fixed on the lines of the glyph.

There was silence aside from the swish of his tail and America's breathing. The pendant glowed as magic was pushed into it, as her intent and will made the glyph burn into the pendant. For a moment it glowed under her hand, shadows pulled in from around them, and then it fizzled. Drifting away like smoke, a scent lingered in the air. Something that would inexplicably smell of home, of safety, of all the things that reminded America of security. Gloom was still resting his head on her hand but the shadows pulled away. As they did, his magic retreated from hers; America no longer caught up in it but that sense of wonder would remain all the same. "Take a look at it," he chittered, nudging her hand a bit.

Magic is real. The thought swirled along with the scent of fresh turned earth and a storm in the wind, laundry drying on the line. The power eased back, but the awareness of it thudded through her. "Dang..." she huffed with a laugh. "Helluva artsn'crafts."
Turning her hand to better accommodate Gloom's head, gently scritching his jaw, America reached out with her free hand to pick up the pendant. She held it up in the dim light.

"Y'did the magic, America friend." Gloom let out that rumble that was him purring when she scritched under his jaw. "Y'made y'self a safe place." He only gave her a nudge, no more. The glyph was burned into the pendant and glowed faintly before it faded away entirely. It was simply marked now. "Squeeze it tight," he said, "think about hiding."

A safe place? That she'd made for herself. Her smile grew inexplicably shy for a moment, before the feeling retreated behind her sense of accomplishment. She'd learned to do something new and magical, though what that something was... America wrapped her hand around the stone, and thought about those small, dark places. The ones that were a little wild and very secret and all hers. The sanctuaries of a small, lonely child and a young woman who still longed to run and hide away.

The moment she did, the moment her will and thoughts were focused, shadows erupted around them both. They were entirely hidden in them, a cloud darkness all around, but America would be able to see through it because it was her magic. "Y'can use this to hide," he chittered, going back to her lap and then up to her shoulders. Gloom was back to comfortable shoulder riding size. "... it's stronger here than y'side." A nose pressed to her cheek. "Think about leaving to make it go away."

Looking, she gave a small laugh. "Like a hidey-hole, right in my pocket." She rubbed her thumb along the surface of the pendant, and wondered what Prudie would have said. Probably something a fair bit damning, about folks that have things to hide. America smiled widely. She didn't have to hide, she just liked to. But she liked the rest of the world too much to hide for long, and so it was easy to summon up the feeling of stepping out, from the cozy little space and into the fresh air and elements. The girl inhaled again only to let it out in another laugh. "That was amazing! I did that?"

"Yes! Just like that." Gloom was still purring, a low pleased rumble America could feel. "Y'did it, Gloom just helped a little." He was very pleased with what he had taught her, what she had done. "Y'can use it to run away but y'might have to give it up." Glowing eyes peered at the pendant closely. "The magics will a fade with use. Y'need to redo it again later." The same steps. "American friend will be safer with this and y'can learn more later. Different glyphs do different things. Just practice. Y'new to magics, they'll make y'tired." lizbot congratulations! america has learned
glyph magic - the knowledge of how to use will and symbols to imbue an item with a desired ability. in this case, america has learned the shadow shield glyph. the item marked with this glyph will allow the user to hide within a small pocket of shadows, blocking them from being seen and protecting against a single attack. the user can hide one other person with them. the item may be tossed at the ground and used as an escape, disorienting a foe, or tossed at another person to protect them but the item will be sacrificed and another must be made.
the magic will fade with repeated use and will need to be refreshed. it can later be upgraded to be more effective.

"You're a real good teacher, Gloom Friend," America stated with quiet gratitude. Elsewhere in the room, there was a rude sound from Mr. Bitterberry that was possibly a sort of grudging agreement. The girl sat straighter, her expression both thoughtful and bright as this new piece of assurance and safety. Her own magic. Earned and learned. "I'll practice a lot, much as I'm able." America nodded. The idea that learning and practicing this could lead to more made it impossible to stop smiling. "You've opened a great big door for me, haven't you just?" She gazed down at the pendant for a long moment and then slipped the pendant into her pocket, would have to get a sturdy chain of sorts for it later. Curling in a bit, she pressed her face against Gloom's shadowy fur. "Thank you, Gloom Friend."

There was a bit of a chitter, a little bit of preening. Gloom was happy with this, happy that America had learned magics. "Y'can learn anything," he said insistently. "This place is magic and y'are magic now." The shadow creature curled around her, head tucked under her chin. "M'always y'friend. Friends don't need thanks; friends help."

"Doesn't mean I won't be grateful when you do, hun," America laughed. "You know, I've been thinking for over a year now, I probably won't go to school again and carry on learning stuff." Careful not to dislodge him, the girl began placing the remaining supplies back into her bag. "But this is better than any other sorta learning I was picturing. Will I be able to make this sorta thing for other folks too? Or is it a... hmmm...something a person's gotta make for themselves, thing?"

"School ..." Gloom got a wide-eyed look at the mention of that because it was a people thing and he liked hearing about people things. "... y'can teach others but they gotta find their own things. Y'special stuff is just for ya." There was an eager swish to his tail. "Y'think ... y'can show me y'place? Tell me about school? I'll show ya a way out back to the other side too!" lizbot we can end on your post! thanks for playing with gloom, america! enjoy your new magic!
