" She's a young woman." Alg's voice took on a slight growl, "A young woman who made a choice. Someone who has bloody parents-" His voice had risen a moment, pointing outside, "-who I'm sure would appreciate you implying that their child is an ancient being. I'm fairly sure her mother remembers giving birth to her." Alg had seen her memories, seen her in other's memories, felt her connections to the people she cared about and her conviction in her choice. She may have always made the choice, time and time again, but she was always herself - a person - when she did it. The implication that she was anything less than a human being made him genuinely angry. He huffed, "I sure as hell hope they haven't let you talk to those kid's families." Yes, he was possibly a bit fond of Heliodora, and a bit defensive.

This had taken a rather sudden turn, as Algernon seemed to be on the brink of outright shouting at him. Shun's eyes narrowed as he fell silent for the time being, letting the older man go on. Why he or anyone else for that matter even attempt to speak with any of the missing trio's parents about the true nature of their circumstances was beyond him. Attempting to speak with anyone about the supernatural being real when they have not yet experienced any of it was just going to make him seem like a lunatic. "Exactly what do you think I would say to them? Tell them that their kid cannot come back because they have become the wardens-no, the cage of some eldritch entity called "The Enemy"?" he scoffed. With a shake of his head, he arbitrarily picked up another audiobook title, then moved over to one of the other shelves that contained actual books. Algernon didn't give him any actual recommendations, having opted to get on his case for his choice of wording, so he was just going to pick out one of the larger texts... whatever it might be.

"You're missing the point." Algie shook his head, still not commenting on what the other was picking out. Let him find her something on his own. "Humanity is the point. Any of us are one decision away from being Heliodora." He shook his head in disbelief, "She was someone's student, someone's daughter not very long ago. to assume otherwise is degrading and rude." The bookshop owner moved along, back towards the front of the store where he would ring up whatever Shun finally settled on. "I'm hardly going to recommend you speak to anyone if you can't even acknowledge they're a person." What were any of them at this point? They had powers. The could do things. If they didn't have their judgement and humanity, what did they have?

Shun lifted his head slightly after setting his three items down onto the counter. "I never said she is not a person," he said quietly and calmly. It was all he stated in response. His earlier question was a matter of semantics, since 'teenager' typically implied someone whose age was in their teens. He already questioned just how human any of them were at this point, anyway, or how much of their 'humanity' they'd end up losing the long they expose themselves to the other place. That said nothing about whether any of them were still people. Shun saw little point in trying to explain any of this, however. Not to someone who was so quick to jump on the high road and look down upon him for one question. He didn't think any amount of explanation would help here.

"Semantics," Alg huffed, though to his credit he wasn't exactly running Shun out of the store. The quiet calm of the other, while not doing him any sympathetic favors with the shop owner, kept him from getting any more upset. "Have a little care in how you speak then, from now on. People in this city are close to these things. She was a girl- she was a student- and before you were here she was walking these streets and going to school and coming in here to buy books." She wasn't some lofty being to some people, she wasn't some immortal pillar of the otherworld, that was simply something she became. And if and when the cycle restarted, another Heliodora would be a girl and choose the same path - at least as far as he'd been lead to believe. Alg hadn't rung up anything yet, hands pressed to the counter in a tense lean, which eventually sagged and sunk back to his heels, "I apologize," only for getting snippy, not for what he said, "We've been very close to this."

Unfortunately, Shun wasn't really one to handle people well in general. It was not the first time he had upset someone due to how he phrased something, and it likely wasn't going to be the last. The bigger issue was he tended to not care about what other people thought of him. While he waited to be rung up for the books, he folded his arms, waiting patiently as he stared at Alg. "So I have noticed," he said. It was quite apparent that Heliodora was fairly important to Alg on a personal level. He wouldn't have been all up in arms about it otherwise, "I have no real ties in this town. It makes it, perhaps, a little too easy to keep emotionally distant. With how much more dangerous things have gotten regarding magic and 'the hidden war', I honestly do not know if I want to change that."Getting too close seemed like a fairly dangerous thing to do in this case, more-so than usual.

"So why bother?" Unfortunately for Shun, unless he walked out, he was at Alg's mercy so far as conversation when so long as he didn't ring anything up. "If you don't actually care. Unless I'm also reading 'emotionally distant' wrong." Wasn't some level of emotion or drive required in police work? To care? To want to help people? Alg lifted a brow and pushed his glasses up his nose, "Or is the thought of powers just too alluring?"

Shun shook his head, "I am not one to leave problems unchecked, especially not when I have the access and means to do something about it. I do not think ignorance is not bliss, and things tend to get worse if nothing is done."It was a little complicated, and he didn't care too much if it ended up not making sense to Alg, but he tried to elaborate anyway. "There may be others who can take care of it, but whether I like it or not, I am in this now as well. Gaining powers, but as far as I am concerned, just means it is in part my responsibility or duty to deal with this s**t."Not to mention that it was probably really within his (or anyone's) best interests that the Enemy didn't get what it wanted.

"How do you even know what's what? And what do you plan on doing?" Alg wasn't actually being discouraging, he was curious. There were quite a few people reaching out and doing their best but Algie was beginning to wonder if there were 'sides' or 'wrong and right' to this at all. To what end were they doing any of it, especially when they were clearly locked into something beyond their control. The older man shrugged, "What are we taking care of exactly?" Was it the kids? Was it the enemy? Was it magic as a whole? Because every turn, every bit of information they received, seemed to confuse more. "People are people, powers or not, which means they are easily misled and prone to mistakes. How do we even know what the truth is?" Alg straightened, holding up a hand to clarify, "I'm not trying to discourage. I'm just not sure anyone has the truth.. and we're taking the word and advice of bias sources."

A sigh escaped Shun, "Right now, I do not know. Which is why I am trying to learn everything I can first and foremost so I can try to figure that out."Algernon questioning him didn't bother him much. It was going to take a lot more than that to discourage the stubborn detective anyway. He was very aware that he was still rather new to this whole situation, and it didn't help that others involved didn't have all the answers. Right now, he felt his best course was to investigate what he could, while honing whatever abilities he managed to pick up along the way. Learning how to use magic on the other side seemed like it might be key to survival there, so that was another thing to keep in mind. "As for what... there is the issue of magic leaking into our world. I trust and agree with Detective Mercer's judgement in that it is not supposed to be here. Supposedly we have tried and failed this fight numerous times already. I do not know if that is true, but if it is, it has some rather strong implications. Even if that is not the case, the incident at the library may be enough to show some of the dangers of the leak."He shifted in place, looking out the window for a moment. The supposed hunt or whatever it was that was to come in August was in the back of his mind. He didn't have much of an idea of what that entailed, but it didn't seem like any good will come of it. "You are right. We do not have a way of knowing yet. Further investigation and evidence is needed. But I think that not attempting to uncover the truth or take action would be worse than failing."Though, he really hated failure too. But it was still better than not trying, when they had the means to do so.

Alg opened his mouth, but then closed it. he wasn't exactly comfortable sharing his thoeries or opinion with the young policeman. Having a drive for the truth was one thing but no one quite knew what it was. "The magic was leaking before us, as far as I've understood. I'm not sure if stopping it is possible at this point, but I wish you luck." Jeremiah had told him that Shun had developed powers, that he was now among the ranks of those who could find their way into the other world. He wondered if everyone in the town, at some point or other, should it all come pouring out- would they all end up powered? "I've been told that the more we're told, the more we find out, the more we're doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past." The older man finally picked up the scanner and scanned the first audiobook, "What are your powers, if you don't mind me asking?"

"Maybe there is no way to stop it, but in the very least we may be able to do something to reduce the damage that unleashing magic into our world might do," Shun sighed, "And one of my goals is to find out just what the past mistakes are... so that we might be able to avoid repeating those as well."He had no doubts that the deeper he got into this, the more dangerous it would become, and not necessarily only for himself. At Alg's question about his powers, he looked down at the one physical book he was purchasing and flicked his wrist a bit. The object lifted up into the air, seemingly on its own. He moved it around a little bit, before setting it back down onto the counter gently. "That is all right now, at least as far as I am aware."

It had been an idea he pursued as well until he'd been informed that the more information he was provided the more likely they all were to mess things up again. Of course Sunny had told him, showed him the deaths, but he had new ideas about what was right and what end they were bringing themselves to. "Not so shabby." Alg chuckled, "I've recently begun to float myself." A quick glance around, coast clear, and the man seemed to rise higher and higher, though not above the counter. Of course he had some more small abilities but not much he could show. "Have you tried anything on the other side?"

Shun tilted his head. He expected Alg to lift something else up, but instead... the old man, himself, started to float on off the ground. That could potentially be very useful, if not also possibly a little dangerous, "How high can you go?"He wasn't sure if it was just a sort of levitation, or if the bookstore owner could actually fly. "I have not yet," he said with a shake of his head, "I have only been on the other side once so far... and quite frankly, I am not entirely certain how to even go about attempting to do anything over there."It was one reason why he planned to seek out Heliodora. He knew that will had something to do with it, but... surely there was more to it than just that.

"A little over three feet and it starts to become difficult to maintain and go higher.." He drifted back down, feet seemingly hitting the floor again. "Not really sure what triggers any of this. It may be environmental - or perhaps just involvement triggers more. I'm not exactly brimming with magical powers," like Jeremiah, "but they seem to increase with time." He had the strong desire to 'think fast' throw a book at Shun to further demonstrate more of his powers but the idea just made him smirk a bit, and he declined. "Heliodora should be able to help you a bit with magic," If he was polite with her, "So there is that. Though from what I've hear it relies heavily on pop culture references and magic words." His brows lifted, "I'm not joking." He rang up the last items and and total popped up for Shun.
