The smile was sort of infectious. It played at the corner of Jamie's mouth as he listened, nodding in legitimate understanding because now that he had a friend who did each and every one of those things, it was genuinely nice to hear. Had it been only months ago, Jamie probably would've fought with jealousy over the matter. Surviving eighteen years on casual acquaintanceships forged in convenience or outright avoidances or, worst of all, bullies had been hard. Add to that a touch of guilt for being so undeniably selfish and it would've been a bad time all around.
"That's sounds... really nice." Posture relaxing, he looked less nervous, and it was as if both of them were beginning to get comfortable. "Shiloh's had to do that for me a few times, too. Stand up for me, I mean... It would've been a lot weirder to, um, deal with all of this without him. We're even trying to learn magic and stuff together."
Shifting in his seat, he lightly shrugged. "Shiloh's kinda, um, easily riled so I think sometimes this stuff might stress him out, but... he keeps going with me."

Alg was glad that Jamie seemed to be relazing, as it made him relax as well. He definitely saw a bit of his younger self in the man, though by this age he'd already known Jeremiah for years and found need to stand up for himself under his friend's influence. Jamie seemed to be a bit of a slow grower - he was confident he'd be alright. "Well I don't blame any of you for being stressed," Alg huffed a bit, mostly at 'magic', "It's not like we've all been given any sort of instruction guide and it's come out of nowhere.." His brows lifted to the younger man though, "But don't discount yourself. You can be strong on your own with proper motivation." Probably Shiloh motivation, but it was better than folding in on oneself.

"An instruction guide would be nice," Jamie admitted, letting himself sound just as exasperated. "Too bad they don't, y'know... teach this stuff in school." If he'd been only a smidgen more comfortable, he might've cracked a joke about Algernon getting the ball rolling on a new magical theory and preparation class, but he stuck to thinking about it instead.
"I... really have been trying, though. And, um, I won't give up. S-So don't worry." It was obvious he still had a way to go before he could stand completely on his own two feet, but he'd get there. Someday, with effort, he'd get there.
"Thanks, though. It does help to hear..."

"It would," He chuckled a bit, "I've been saying that for a while. And I'll have to admit-" He leaned sideways as if he was revealing a secret, "I've actually been looking through the books on that side.. hope springs eternal, hm?" Books, of course, were his thing. "I believe in you," Alg reassured with a small smile and pat of one of his very warm, very comforting hands. "And remember that will and belief have power so don't overlook confidence. Remember we're all new at this." The professor's eyes drifted down to Jamie's bag of snacks, then back to the bakery window before he checked his watch and sighed. "I won't keep you and your tarts up any more.." He chuckled, knowing very well hanging out with a 'gramps' was probably not so fun.

If anyone were to admit to having fun with a gramps, it would probably be Jamie. Anyone who was kind was enjoyable in their own way, once he calmed, of course. This small side quest of sorts had been a nice addition to what was otherwise a pretty good day already. Looking down at the bag of tarts, he smiled.
"Hope springs eternal," he repeated with a silly laugh, one that softened alongside his expression as soon as Alg's comforting hand found him again. "Let me know if you find that operator's manual. I'd like to look at it."
A short, easy sigh later and Jamie had stood, stretching, feeling his back pop. "I think I am gonna go home and enjoy these. Thank you for talking to me, though. It's... nice not to be alone. If you don't mind, I'll... see you later." It was honestly nice to look forward to seeing someone again.

"No problem," Alg chuckled and winked before standing himself and brushing at his clothing to straighten it. "Be safe," He adjusted his bag, "And give a call or text if you need anything."
