"You're one of the few people who've figured that out about him," he said with an appreciative smile. "Not everyone takes the time to wheedle things out of him, but he's not as stuffy as he pretends to be." Not by a long shot, although that stubborn head of his made it hard to change him sometimes. Still, that stubbornness had undoubtedly helped Rylan through a lot of his life, and would continue to do so, especially in his line of work.

"Ah, you just set me up for it," he said of the compliment with a humble, but maybe not totally, shake of his head. "I just took the shot. Doesn't always work out that way. It must be my lucky night."

Brow quirked.

"You fix engines?" he added, cutting off his drink mid-sip to set the beer down. "May I?" He took her hand and traced over the hardened, calloused fingers with similar ones of his own, shaped by an entire lifetime of tough physical work. Ranching, rowing, the Marines. None of that made for particularly soft hands either.

"Looks good on you," he said finally, looking up and meeting her green eyes with his own sharp gray ones. "I always wanted, you know, a bike from Zero Engineering. Which may be unAmerican of me, to want a Japanese bike, but damn those things are beautiful. Course, you probably know more about bikes than I do. Everything I know about engines comes primarily from fixing up a beat-up old pickup on the ranch."

And then he laughed, genuinely amused, by Jo's suggestion. "Model?" he echoed. "Well, I'm flattered if I'm pretty enough for something like that, but... I couldn't work a job that requires no marketable skills. Unless, of course, staring broodingly into the distance counts but... I do that all the time anyway and I never get paid for it."

A shame.

"Marines, actually," he said finally. "Until about a week ago."

"I've gathered," she agreed, amused to hear Cas singing Rylan's praises after Ry had done much of the same. "You two are good friends, then? In the face of fairness, he told me you were his 'buddy.' Gave you commendation up and down."

She'd let him dwell on that though, slightly inclining her head in permission for him to take her hand, fingers curling outwards more so. "It could be a very good night," the invitation was broached, if not quite issued yet, enjoying their little banter, "it's just starting, though it's certainly looking up."

His hand over hers was electric. For Jo, her hands were her life - and to allow this strange sort of intimacy was akin to a kiss, for her. Her fingers curled around his hand and brushed over the worn parts and ridges of work and battle, and almost unwitting, she put her beer on the ground and extended her other hand to run over the back of his. "If it's functional, I can fix it, just some easier than others." Her thumb traced over his knuckles, curiosity reaching her eyes. Why are you so rough? "Glad you think so. Not everyone likes their woman hardy."

Jo's brows slowly lifted as Cas began to talk shop. "I'm handier around a Harley or Indian, but those are some fine machines. A bit too new for me to restore, otherwise I'd pass you along information." A soft sound of surprise returned the information about the truck. "Yeah? Maybe you'd like my old '47 outside, Hudson. One of the first things I restored and kept."

Damnit, Rylan. He was right. Cas was kind of awesome.

A soft chuckle followed his laughter. "I can tell by your hands you're not a model, though you certainly had me fooled." She let him go then with both hands, reaching down to pick up her beer with one, the other remaining against his for the time being - not holding, but relaxed. " -- that makes sense." Jo had seen both of Rylan's tattoo's - now his glowing review clicked in place in her head. "Welcome home, then," she said softly, knowing that could be a tender subject to some people. "Good of you to join us."

"What, that kid?" he said, nodding to Rylan, who had finally left the box of cookies and was emphatically making dart-throwing gestures with a group of other firefighters, no doubt debating who would win in a throw-down of darts. "Yea, he's... about the closest thing to family I've got." So it was good to know Rylan had been speaking as highly of him as Cas usually did in return.

At Jo's next words, he shifted his gaze back to her and let his smirk widen into a real grin, part surprised, part delighted, part devilish in its cheek. His eyes had come alive as they didn't during most routine conversations, dancing with an icy twinkle that made them look as bright as the stars overhead. "I'd hope for it to keep looking up, but I don't think we're in danger of it going south anytime soon."

Unless he screwed up real bad, but Cas usually didn't screw up when he'd found something, or someone, he wanted.

His fingers flexed open at her touch, not entirely bidden, feeling her strong fingers against his knuckles and the back of his hand. Capable fingers. There was something so incredibly alluring about them and about the knowledge that Jo could probably outwork half the men in this town when it came to engines, cars.

"You show me a hundred prim and pretty princesses who've never done a day's work, and I'll show you a hardy woman who's worth more than all of those combined," he said. "The ones who sit in the bar and wait for men to buy them their drinks? They're better off with a desk jockey banker than they are with me."

Which, admittedly, wasn't always enough to stop him in desperate times, but those were the kinds of girls who left him feeling empty the next day. That was where the regret kicked in.

"That's a cool truck," he added. "Much cooler than the one I fixed. It was just a piece of crap Ford from the 70s with too many miles and s**t parts. I patched her up alright, but I liked the horses more." Another smile. Out in that country, horses were the more efficient way to travel anyway.

"But thanks," he said. "I followed Ry into the Marines. Just didn't know much else to do with my life when we graduated, but then it's six years and now I don't really know what else to do with it." But that was another story.

Jo made a sound in her throat that was a half-swallowed laugh at calling Rylan a kid. She would have stood up for him, but glancing over and seeing his gestures, she decided he could sit with that title for a bit. The mention of family pulled her eyes back to Cas. There was an understanding there that she would not touch, not on a first meeting, maybe not ever.

And he grinned and she was pretty sure time came to a complete stop for a few seconds. "You are really hot and you know it," she breathed, accusing, "you're not allowed to play coy like that. It's distracting." Jo squared her shoulders and pushed her hair over one, gathering her dropped wits mentally. She was a sucker for a good smile and he was already too damn adept at this to get that much of an advantage so early on.

Exhaling shortly through her nose, she tipped her head. "Some of the pretty princesses can be worth it," she added as her own amendment, "but the vapid ones aren't worth the air they breathe." Jo wrinkled her nose, sipping her beer as if to wash the very taste of the discussion out of her mouth, though she did lift a questioning brow. "Better off than with you? Dare I ask?"

She laughed shortly at his description of the truck, shaking her head. "They're all pretty much pieces of s**t, but some of them are pretty enough to reconsider. Trucks just don't have the appeal of bikes - " she was getting really tired of feeling surprised, but Cas was dealing that out in spades, " - or horses. My first loves. I didn't get to work with them, but you keep adding impressive credentials to your resume."

Another sip of beer, and it was half gone. "Story of my life, that. One odd job to the next, but it suits me." She shrugged, watching him thoughtfully. "Bakery is probably the longest thing I've ever stuck with and gotten paid for. You going to stay around, you think, or is this just a pit stop?"

"Ah," he said with a chuckle at the mention of distractions. "But that's the point, isn't it? You can try to distract me, too. I'm good for it."

As if he would decline any such thing, especially not coming from someone like Jo, who was doing a fine job surprising him in her own right.

"You right, they're not always synonymous. Just often," he nodded, and then with a small, smiling pause in which he tilted his eyes toward the sky in thought, added, "I just mean those are the forgettable ones. The babes and the sweethearts, as it were. Incidentally, those are also the ones who tend to think it's a sign of affection, so they still win."

And he shook his head again, peering at her, watching the way her hair curved and spilled down her shoulder, and wondering where she'd come from. "I grew up on a ranch - sort of. It was a shitty ranch. The horses were the only good thing about it, so I have a soft spot for them."

Animals were some of the most purest creatures on the earth, so far as Cas could tell, and he loved them for that.

"You seem to be doing alright at baking, if those treats are any indication," he said, quirking his brow. "And as far as staying around... I haven't decided yet. Don't really have anywhere to call home, so... if something good pops up, I might well stick around."

"Mm," she hummed, tapping her fingers over her bottle, "I don't want you distracted, I want you focused, on me. My goal is to see if we speak enough of the same language to take you home for a long night." It was all said with the same tone someone might comment on the weather with. "And if it's a really good night, a repeat in the morning."

Another smile was hidden behind a sip of beer.

Leaning back comfortably in the seat, her gaze was one of amusement. "Are you looking for affection? You'll find I'm not exactly the most forward in public, but if that's your thing, I can make exceptions." Green eyes turned over him again, deciding that yes, he looked very good from what she could see sitting down, she could easily fit in his lap.

The way he looked at her gave her pause, a slight tilt of her head. She was a touch surprised at how much of himself he was divulging, but it wasn't a bad thing. If anything, all he'd said so far had earned massive brownie points. "I can imagine you taking care of horses, some distant cowboy." A faint chuckle chased her own words. It took a few seconds for her to continue, however, weighing the pros and cons of sharing parts of a past she'd spent her life avoiding. "There were chickens where I grew up, but no farm. Just people who thought it would be a good idea to have them in the backyard. I made deliveries to a stable when I was a teen, they always let me feed the horses if I had the time."

Too much. The bittersweet feeling twinged in her chest and she pushed past it with a wry smile. "Not that you've had any to be a fair judge," she quipped back, "which means now, you owe me, or forever bear the shame of insulting me." Jo allowed a small grin to form so he'd know she was teasing, but it faded quickly at the last words. Her eyes turned briefly to the bottle in her hands, then back to Cas. "Haven't figured that out myself yet. But, maybe, with Ry and the thrill of doing nothing for a change, you could learn."

The words were said with intent to help, but ultimately felt empty to her. She was not one to talk about home.

"Oh, I'm focused. I was thinking more like a threepeat at 4 am," he teased. "But I can work with the morning too."

And he was watching her with care, almost hawklike in the way he took in her quiet movements. The smile didn't escape him. It wasn't the first time she'd lifted her beer to her lips immediately after saying something like that.

"You should finish your beer," he added. "So you can't keep hiding your smiles behind it. We'd appreciate if you'd share it with us. And by we, I mean, me."

He drained his bottle and shook it to show that his was empty with another smirk, and set it on the table.

"I don't know much about chickens," he admitted. "But the horses. They're something else. So quiet, peaceful even. You need that when everything else in your life is just... all-out war sometimes." But he said it in a way that suggested he was more happy than sad about that.

"I'll owe you a dozen favors before I'd offend you," he promised, then allowed himself an exasperated grin and hung his head. "That seems a bit low, doesn't it? Let's say more like... a hundred."

Her brows lifted with a soft 'oh' formed on her lips, accepting the change of plans easily enough. "Now you've got me intrigued. Hm." Since Cas had made it known he intended to spend the night, it certainly opened a lot of prospects.

Jo scoffed and handed her half beer over to the man. "You're free to finish it, then," she offered, lifting her chin in amusement. "It would appear my night is going to be a longer one than I'd anticipated and I'm not going to need the booze to enjoy myself." The subtle smile returned, the invitation shared. "I wouldn't want to miss out."

She hummed a note at his words, interested in the way his talking of the past seemed to soften him, but she wasn't going to push. Not much, anyway. He was willing to talk, it's not like she was making him uncomfortable - he wasn't the type to brook that behavior. "So, if you stay," she ventured, "do you think horses would be in your future? There's nice farmlands on the outskirts of town. Might be good for you to have a little peace." With all the weird s**t that went on in that town, he was likely to find his own stretch of war if he stayed long enough.

"Oh," she exclaimed again, her brows upwards but her eyes lidded with great interest, "I'll take that. The number might go up though, just because I really like the idea of having you beholden." Jo managed to keep her mirth in a single upward curve of her lips. "Besides, favors would not go unrewarded." A small test of the waters was issued to see his intent, if he was looking for just one night of fun or to have a number on hand.

"I like to think I'm more entertaining than beer," he said with a thoughtful nod. "Although I'm sure it's a tough contest." He accepted her bottle and downed it without much pause, setting the empty beer down beside his own and leaning back.

"Horses in my future? I'd like to think so," he replied. "There isn't as much wide open space here as out west but I'm sure we could work something out. I've never done the whole... schooling a horse in an arena, though. They seem made more to just run. There's nothing freeing about trotting around in a ring."

But as far as peace went... as much as it'd be good for him, Cas wasn't sure he was ready to step entirely away from his old life yet. Putting down roots on his own little piece of the world seemed so farfetched and foreign.

But he smiled again at her next words and shrugged helplessly. "I can't fight that," he said. "Wouldn't want to chance insulting you again."

She watched him down the booze and leaned towards him rather than back, finding that his opinion on the horses seemed to be rather telling about himself. Jo wasn't even sure he noticed, but she wasn't going to point it out. "You like to be wild and free? Wouldn't have guessed," she teased, allowing her faint smile to be viewed this time.

A soft 'tsk' chased his last words. "You haven't insulted me. Believe it or not, I can look past the slight to my pastries when there's a better prospect on the horizon." Her brow arched - seeming a permanent reaction to him, she was noting - though there was a touch of seriousness in her tone. "If I didn't want to drag you out of here, I wouldn't be sitting here, giving up my beer to you. I don't usually share that freely."

There was enough in her words to indicate she was mostly making light of it, though there was a measure of truth, too. If he wasn't worth her time - if he'd truly insulted her - she wouldn't be there. He was a pro at dodging her attempts of seeing his intent, but that could be dealt with some other time, if at all. Jo made up her mind about him, and from there, it was on Cas.

"So." She placed her chin against her palm, fingers curled up around her cheek, one of them idly brushing back a loose strand of her bangs. "More beer, billiards, a dance? How long is it polite to wait before I make good on getting you out of here?"

Cas took the good-natured jab with a grin. "Short of free-falling, galloping a horse across landscape that goes on forever, with the sky all wide open space on all sides is probably the best feeling in the world," he said earnestly. It was one of the few good things he'd taken away from his childhood, one of the few things he'd carry with him from that time until the day he died.

"How about all three?" he said, watching keenly the way her hand caressed her cheek. He sat up, leaning forward to match her, drawing near. The fact that he was only about a foot away from her was not lost on him, but he sat himself still anyway and just smiled. "If we want to make good on the threepeat, I'd say... in an hour."

Or less, depending on how long it took them to blow through the billiards.

"We're not all that different," she replied with an airy smile, "just that my version of horse power uses an engine and my wide open spaces are the road." Jo could control a motorcycle, but a horse? She wasn't so sure. Even so, the mental image of Cas riding free was alluring. She may or may not have envisioned him with a shirt, which lended to her allowing her smile to stay in place.

Him drawing close and smiling was truly an underhanded gesture, but it worked. Jo laughed softly at his claim of timing, green eyes turning over his features from so close, extending her free hand to delicately trace her fingers along the hard line of his jaw. His eyes were beautiful, and she was thoroughly looking forward to seeing him in a more intimate light. "All three it is then," she replied softly, allowing her amusement to linger in a slight grin, leaning in a little more. She was a breath away from being kissably close before she used the lean to push herself up to stand, stretching out with her arms over her head and a playful glint in her eye.

"And what, cowboy, are you willing to wager on this game of pool?" Jo pushed her hair back over her shoulder again and turned to retrieve him another beer, amusement in her gaze cast over her shoulder.

"I can appreciate that," he said. The fluid way in which her lips curled into a smile reminded him what a good call it had been to finish her beer.

He almost closed the inches between them to kiss her, but then she was up, and he tilted his head to follow her with a twinkle in his eye and a look of mock disbelief on his face. That was alright. Cas could wait, and two could play at that game.

He stood to follow her to the pool table, wondering what, if anything, was fit to bet on this game of theirs. "Earth-shatting org- Ah, we're in decent company," he said, cutting himself off with a pointed look in Jo's direction. "How about just a slap?" he amended, allowing himself a soft chuckle. "Anywhere the winner desires."

But mostly, the butt.

She thoroughly enjoyed that Cas was playing along, plucking another of his beers before heading to an open pool table. The cap was again popped off, the beer set on a side table for the man.

Jo's brows shot up, and playful, she sauntered over to Cas - noting he was tall, apparently she liked them that way - and unabashed, slid her arms around his middle and tilted her chin to look up at him. "Some things are expected of a threepeat," she teased him, "some are a given. You can decide which that is." If he was going to make her work for it, the least she could do was tease with what he was missing out on in the process. Anticipation could be fun.

"But I agree to the stakes. Both of them." Her subtle smile returned, but her eyes were bright with it. Jo especially was game for slapping his butt, because if it was as nice as the rest of him, there was going to be a lot more hands-on play to go around.

He let her come, and when she put her arms around him, he quirked his brow and brought a hand up to brush back a piece of her hair, twining it around two fingers before sliding them through to rest on her shoulder. “I hope it’s a given,” he answered with a crooked grin.

“Figured you might,” Cas answered with a laugh, corralling the balls on the table into the triangle. He grabbed the beer as he passed, taking a pull from the bottle before setting it down. “Ladies first? Don’t expect me to go easy on you.” Even though he fully intended to do so. Not because he thought she needed it, but because he wouldn’t mind her hands on his – whatever. And because it’d get them out of here that much sooner.
