Entry!(1)
I live in Canada, in the Thousand Islands, on the St. Lawrence River. My first poem reflects this, entitled
A River Rhyme, Midsummer

Go down to the river
And watch the sun sparkle-up the blue-jean waves.
Go down to the river
And make it your summer day.

St. Lawrence side,
River-edge wide
I dream of mermaids singing to me,
St. Lawrence side
Beacon-light's bride
And you will come back to me.

Go down to the river
And let the wind lift-kiss-catch your honey-blond hair
Go down to the river
And I'll be a-waiting there.

St. Lawrence side,
River-edge wide
I dream of mermaids singing to me,
St. Lawrence side
Beacon-light's bride
And you will come back to me.

Entry!(2)
Ever feel slightly defeated? The second poem I had wanted to post, about picnicking at the beach in Summer, I couldn't locate within my big fat file of collected poetry that I've written, so I will contribute a completely different type of poem, altogether -- it is about the season of Spring, renewal, and looking forward to tomorrow gardens and a Summer approaching.

It is. . .

"it is just like this,"
she said, with emphasis
but i continued to escape into a golden squash seed
i am looking out the window
i am watching Petite Squirrel Gris
nibble at the sesame wheat crispbread
spread with natural peanut butter.

"we are all out of peanuts-in-the-shell,"
she said, surveying the empty kitchen cupboard
but i fell
like i fell out of my body/
my shell.
i was just a distant dream
next to myself
so i fell
like i fell out of my form.
i carefully scrubbed the rough peanut layers off
like Gris Squirrel nibbling at my outer skin.

the Old Mother Gris Squirrel died this spring --
i saw her dragging her hind leg
her bushy tail drooping miserably.
i wonder how this Petite Gris has learned to come
and take the crispbread from my outstretched hand:
this new little one, so fresh and alive
like my squash seeds drying on the
windowsill.

"you have not been listening,"
she says, tugging playfully at my shirtsleeve.

i have not been listening.
instead, i have been returned to the mystery of a
squash seed
i am listening to my garden
i am listening to my garden
growing.

EDIT: This morning I realized that I ought to clarify that gris is French for grey, as in "little grey squirrel," or, "petite Gris" -- when I was originally writing this poem I was remembering the little female eastern grey squirrel that became quite tame and would beg sweetly for peanuts, waiting patiently on the deck, for me to join her, with such expressive eyes. Gris was a very special wild pet -- she never tried to aggressively enter our home, and stayed away from the screened windows, even though she knew it could have been an available opening to where the peanuts-in-the-shell were stashed.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS:

Hi folks! Sorry for the delay in selecting the winners, but here is the moment you've been waiting for. Summer is not technically over yet, but since this is the season where many of us are returning to school and other responsibilities and preparing for the cold weather, this is the perfect time to wrap up the Summer Poetry Contest. Until next year, and here are the winners!

1st Place:
o l i v i n e s k y

Loved the use of adjectives, captured both the beauty and grotesqueness of life in the summertime. It can be everything at once!
Your prize is, as mentioned in the opening post, 1 bill gold + an art of a character/avi of your choice. I will be sending the gold to you in a trade shortly and you may PM me your idea of what you want for the art. smile

2nd Place:
BatChic

To be specific, I liked both your poems but this prize is for your second entry. It really captured some vague summery feeling that I don't know how to describe, very pretty & well-written. Your prize will be 1 billion gold which I will send to you in a trade shortly. Nicely done!

3rd Place:
DefauIt

Simply beautiful! The soft wind is one of my favorite things about summer and you described it wonderfully with your haiku. I can feel wind getting colder already, how sad sad Your prize will be a RIG (random item generator) which will be gifted to you shortly. Best of luck!

And thanks to the rest of you for your lovely submissions! I enjoyed reading them all.
