 "What? Oh, yes, it's very...educational, certainly," That was safe, wasn't it? Anything could be an education. "And not a...complete waste of time," he said, straining at the compliment.
Stalker seemed to remember himself, and fetched the flower he had hastily hidden. He held it between his teeth.
"For you, sire," He said with utmost seriousness, and then with a quick amendment, "For your collection, I mean."

King couldn't help but laugh at Stalker's attempts to give some merit to the events. "Yes, quite an education." And turning his head he added. "But also a very excellent opportunity to see the tribe fill its bellies and other needs at someone else's expense." And that had been part of his full endorsement of the trip (not that his approval meant anything at this end of the year)
He took the flower and nestled it in his antlers near his brow. "Why thank you." he said with a fond sort of smile. "But now I have too many." And reaching up with his nimble prehensile tail he removed two identical and very small - and slightly wet- flowers, far from the most impressive on the rack and tucked them behind the other buck's ear, nestled in his mane.
"There we go."

Stalker ducked his head, staying obediently still as King affixed the flowers. His nose turned pink, and his face warm under his fur.
"Ah, th-thank you. Sire." And before he could stop himself, "Traditionally the gathering and exchange of flowers is a mating ritual. The white is thought to be associated with new beginnings. It's really...quite fascinating."
Kin had been fascinated with his white coat all day, much to his aggrievement.

King looked surprised at the new information, aware of the general gist of the festival but not quite understanding the full extent of the symbolism. He raised a brow in a way that widened both eyes on that side at the same time.
"Fascinating indeed." he said, looking over the other kin and moving to stroll in a circle around him.
"Does that mean we are mates then?" he asked, not seeming too phased by this. "Even knowing my royal duty and that Fair is ever-present?"

"Oh, no, Sire, I would not presume-! Unless, of course, if you desire it, then...b-but, I would never interfere with your duties, it is my only wish to aid you in...in whatever responsibilities."
There were other kin on the hill, loading baskets.
"It's...it's a very silly festival, all told."
Stalker cleared his throat.
"Do you? ...Desire it?"

"You know..." he said, still circling the other kin like a predator. "I think I do. If you aren't averse to honouring the traditions of a silly festival. I should like you as my consort and companion in all that is important. Though certainly with an increased workload involved."
He moved in to rub his sleek smooth side along Stalker's more prickly one. "Practicality is worth its weight in wealth."

"For the festival?" Stalker asked, straightening slightly, as if being asked as a date for an event was an assignment. "Of course. Right away. Any work that's required, I'll attend to it immediately. Do you need your flowers carried, S- ah, Sirrrrre," he sighed, shivering as King rubbed against him and all of him went just as warm as when King had placed the flowers behind his ear.
