June blinked a few times. Her mom harped about giving grandkids regardless, but she chose not to comment on the matter. It seemed like a touchy subject.

"No, no! It's okay. I like listening," she insisted, and then went back to sipping from her drink. June was a little bit shy and preferred being the ear over being the mouth.

"You sure? You're probably listening to people all day at that desk. I'd like to give you a break if you need one," she confessed, while fidgeting with a straw wrapper, "especially given I pretty much talk at people all day. s**t, I bet you've got a life story from half the people at the office."

"I do less listening at the front desk and more ... watching." Ashdown was certainly an entertaining show.

She punctured her straw wrapper on the table and then stuck the straw through her lid. She took a long sip of coke before saying, "Not really ... I mean I mostly just do paperwork now since we have that girl covering."

There was an awkward pause and she said, "You said you talk to people all day...?" If June was honest, she didn't really know what Leila did in specificity.

"Yeah, I lecture at the college half the time," Leila explained. "If not most of the time. This town isn't exactly overrun with CSI-style cases," except that was kind of a lie given recent events with signs such things were going to keep coming, "but I still get a desk because it makes the red tape easier and it makes the county look prettier. Basically I'm always shoving information at somebody." She shrugged her shoulders. "Looks like I can't really stop, huh?"

June was also thinking about the recent events of the town, though she was perceiving it from the side of crazed furry murderers rather than supernatural mayhem. She hadn't been privvy to the cover up's truth.

"Well ... it's probably very useful, right?" June was used to being the person that shoved information around. "And I'll bet your students benefit from such an active presence in the police force."

"I guess? It doesn't really come up in lecture much. " Leila honestly wasn't sure if many of her students even knew she worked for the local police. "Sometimes I mention it as a career path, but that's as far as it goes. It's not like I can take the class to a field trip to a crime scene."

June fiddling with her soda straw for a bit and said, "Really? I feel like when I went to Boston U professors talked about their jobs alllll the time." Honestly it had been a bit boring.

"What do you do outside of work then? I mean it can't all be lectures and police business?" Of course this was coming from the person that didn't know the meaning of the word "free time."

"Come on, I've been talking about myself too much," Leila protested again at the next question, fidgeting slightly from the attention. "Why don't you tell me about your weekends first? I still barely got enough on you to know how to pick out a birthday card."

"My weekends?" June asked curiously, misinterpreting a bit, "Why do you want to know ... about my weekends ...?" Was she being asked on a date is this how people did this oh god what-

With a lopsided grin and a raised eyebrow, Leila leaned forward slightly and replied, "Well, I think that would be for the same reason you want to know about mine."

"I'm not sure our reasons are the same reasons," she worded awkwardly. "I'm not interested ... if that's what you meant."

"Interested in... what?"

Then Leila's expression dropped, and her eyes widened.

"Holy s**t, did you think I was hitting on you?"

June sank a little in her chair and pulled her soda closer to her face. Now she'd really stepped in it.

"No, no. That'd be ... unprofessional! I just meant I wasn't trying to hit on you by asking." Yeah okay. Totally salvaged that one.

"Then... our reasons probably are the same reasons?" Leila offered haltingly, with a swiftly returning grin.

"Right! Yeah totally. I'm glad we sorted that out. You were saying?"

She bit into her sandwich before her dumb mouth could say anything else.
