Lerin.
Damissan became potently aware of just how much he had to say typically, the longer the exchange went on. How was he to ask about or learn anything if he couldn’t open his mouth? Not that, he supposed, a great deal of it was even his business to begin with, but better to ask and engage than to simply stand mute—worse still as the result of some ‘tragic’ childhood catastrophe.
At least Xilarn’s distaste for — and Ziari’s distinctly positive reaction to on the flip side — the flower was worth something. He smiled. Not quite so effective as commentary to the effect of blustering the older man up further, but for the moment, it would have to do. At least they were encroaching now on the shifter village itself, and having never encountered one in his life prior to the given date, that provided plenty of places for his eyes. The foreigners bustling about, the trees—the structures.
Xilarn had spoken of the fact that they made their homes amidst the canopy, and on an intellectual level, Damis had known and understood that. As they walked into it, however, it was an entirely different experience to look up—and up, and up, and see people not only in and amongst but darting, scurrying as normal over rope and wood bridges strung between the pillars of the jungle canopy as though it were nothing.
He wondered how to go about wordlessly volunteering to ‘babysit’ Gadot again safely, on the ground, on the off chance that either of his company thought they had any business going up higher than he was tall.

This was careful? Xilarn had no idea who would believe such a lie if it was fed to them, but it must've worked on someone, if his cousin sounded so sure of herself. 'Careful,' she said, as if getting scars and needlessly fighting poachers were how most people went through their journeys. And far be it from him to try and imagine what would happen if she wasn't careful.
All he immediately knew was that he didn't like the way this was heading. A familiar and unasked for agitation bubbled up through his chest. He understood wanting to do the right thing, helping things that couldn't help themselves, and it would never not be a noble goal. But, as with most people, Xilarn didn't exactly trust Ziari to manage it on her own. Because why should she be able to? She'd never been here before. Didn't know anyone. Had a negligent amount of survival proficiency. She was here and alive now, but that might as well be a miracle. And as far as what strange, mostly unfamiliar boys seemed to care about, he really hoped his dear cousin wasn't putting any special amount of faith in that.
He couldn't even begin to try and formulate anything that sounded optimistic or encouraging and instead pinched his tongue between his teeth. Better to say nothing. It wasn't as if anything he said would be taken especially positively.
But he didn't like it, and he hoped she damn well knew at least that much.
It pained him, but after forcing a more passive tone, Xilarn muttered, "As long as you are happy with what you're doing and not taking unnecessary risks with your activities and company, especially..." He cleared his throat. "Where are you staying during your time here, anyway?"

“I am happy,” Ziari said she smacked her cousin’s arm playfully and stuck her tongue out. “I promise, Xil. And I’m being careful. No more just running head long into trouble like I did with Aemi. I’ll think things through more. Cross my heart.” As she said this, she litterally made a cross of her heart and grinned. “I know it’s dangerous, I really do. But I had to do this Xil. I really did. I felt so lost back in Oba. Like part of me was buried deep down and if I stayed where I was — did what my parents wanted me to do — I might lose that part forever.” Her grin faded some, replaced by a relaxed, small smile. “I’m staying nearby. A really nice hotel — the inn keeper and his wife are very friendly. Lerin and I made a deal with them to stay longer than usual. And Lerin’s just down the hall from me. So he’s close by if I need him.” She glanced towards Damissan, head tilting to the side a bit. “I’m sure they’d welcome you both for a few nights, if they have rooms available. I bet you’re both tired of sleeping on the ground, yeah?”
