Melancholies

Springtime Teenager

PostPosted: Sun Jun 26, 2016 6:23 pm

Shiloh looked dumbfounded at the first aid kit, like he'd never been offered one in his life. Truth was, he had, but he was still getting used to the whole 'letting people help you' thing.

    "Makes sense." he replied, nonchalant.

He set to work, cleaning up his knee first, picking out little pieces of rock that had managed to worm in there. He clicked his tongue in discomfort, but otherwise bit back any wincing. "I think I'm alright." he told her, surprisingly sincere, "Been through a lot worst y'kno—wait, s**t, I guess you would."

He laughed a little to himself, somewhat cynical, somewhat light. "Might ask for it later with my shoulder, but I think it's fine if you need it more." it was his way of asking if America was alright too, point further proven as he looked up to give her a quick once over with his eyes. It'd kinda suck if he was responsible for her death inadvertently, or something.

There were a good number of raw scraped along her right leg and forearm, her left elbow. Nothing seemed direly hurt and the bruises had yet to show, but what she has was red and bloody and dirty.

"Think mostly I just gotta clean these up," she answered, making a face. "Getting gravel out's never been a favourite, gotta say." With a pair of sweezers and some peroxide, America went to work on her knee, hissing every once in awhile.

"Is your friend okay? The um...bunny fellow? Jaime?" Last she saw, both were running through that portal, emotions both high and determined.

"Jamie, yeah," Shiloh nodded, surprisingly calm in this weird picking-gravel-out-of-their-scrapes bonding time, "He's fine." there was a gentle sort of sigh there, as if he was relieved. Of course Jamie was okay, but it was reassuring to remember the fact. "I'm still sort of worried about his whole... moonwalker thing, though." Jamie was strong and Shiloh knew this, but he still needed support. What if he buckled under the pressure?

    He couldn't let that happen.

"But I think it'll work out," he said after a moment of contemplation, "This whole... thing. I sorta hope so, anyway..." he frowned at his wounds, "I wish everyone understood this whole Otherworld thing more." Wish I could be stronger.

Nodding, she crooked a smile his way. "Doesn't have to be terrible. Even if it's had a rough start, folks learned stuff from it, right?"

With a thoughtful hum, she went on, "Never woulda imagined a person going bunny, though. Reminds me of that kiddie book, you know?" She pauses to think of the name and it is through the sheer power of a good pun that she actually remembers, laughing, "Celery Stalks at Midnight!"

"Celery stalks at midnight?" Shiloh couldn't help himself; a hoarse sounding laugh burst from his throat, and he doubled over with chuckles despite trying to keep his resolve. "I'll have to tease him about that next time I see him."

And he would, because Shiloh was a little s**t who tried to comfort people in subtle sarcasm. Either way, he looked reasonably cheered up. "And yeah, you're right, I guess."

He let his eyes wander out the window of the camper, feeling relative ease at the scenery outside. "It seems really... peaceful out here." he noted duly, eyes lighting up with a sudden thought, "Hey, hey, I'm gonna come back sometime." because it never was 'hey, can I', it just was; "Uh, I mean, if that's okay."

"This kinda stuff seems like it'd real ********' pretty to draw." Shiloh sure was nothing if not eloquent.

America found herself beaming at Shiloh, surprising even herself with how nice the idea of having someone dropping in on her felt. Eyes scrunching up happily with her smile, she answered, "I'd like that a lot, hun. It's pretty as ******** out here, all the best views," and here she couldn't help a saucey hairtoss and wink, "and I guess the forest is nice too."

Impressed, she went on, "You an artist? Like you draw the forreals stuff?"

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) the implication sailed clear over Shiloh's head. He only nodded enraptured, "Yeah, it's nice as ******** out here."

His voice was calm. He was calm. It was a nice feeling.

"I mean, I want to be a really good artist." he fiddled with his hands a little, "Besides like, anything an artist draws is forreals!" a pause, "But I think I'm decent. I'll bring my stuff next time, if you want."

"Naw, like what about those splatter guys and the mister melty watches weirdo. That stuff isn't forreals at all."

Despite America's apparent lack of understanding when it came to surrealism and modern art, Shiloh (and his bunny friend, as well) ended up a standing invitation to visit whenever he wanted. There was also an offer, if he ever had the urge to wander further away from town than his bike would allow, to take the camper out for a long weekend or two and go "do the art" in other states. All sorts of pretty in this country, yeah?

And despite her not knowing the nuances of modern art (because honestly, Shiloh didn't get them either), he still found the conversation enjoyable enough. The invitation was well received, and he texted Jamie with excited rapture about the prospect of some sort of nature expedition.

"All sorts, yeah." he agreed amiably enough; a rarity for Shiloh "contrary" Beaumont.

He didn't want to take up much more of her time, and after the prolonged conversation and adequate respite, Shiloh found himself outside with his bike again, waving to the girl still inside.

"I don't care what no one says," he mumbled to himself as he mounted the bike, "Naming your kid after a country is still weird as ******** class="quote">
