Quartz -- back in his younger, more philanthropic days -- had once spent an entire evening attempting to instruct Astrophyllite in the fine art of kneeing someone in the balls when necessary in order to gain an advantage. Accordingly, for someone who was supposed to be studying how his opponents reacted to pressure situations, he probably should've been more aware of Cavansite's imminent knee directed at his own groin. However, he was still attempting to marshall his senses from her previous attack, and distracted planning his next attempt to test her resolve . . .

Which all left him too late to shift out of the way of her latest and most personal assault. He let out a loud, undignified noise and crumpled, stumbling backward with no immediate thought of counterattack: only the momentary presence of mind not to leave himself exposed to major damage while he was still weakened.

She hadn’t really expected to bring so much pain to the other captain, but Cavansite couldn’t lie and say that she wasn’t pleased at her efforts. Well, that pretty much ended that fight. Yes indeed. The captain smirked and took a step towards Quartz, flicking his forehead, as though to prove her superiority to the male.

Too much pride. That was always her undoing. It had always been her undoing…and it would always be her undoing. Most likely, at least. She did a stupid thing and turned her back on the other captain, making a show of getting her spear. There was no need to worry. She had won. He was beaten. She was so…amazing.

So cool.

Although there were very few times when it was advisable to stand over one's enemy and gloat, there were times when it was less of a bad idea than others: for example, if your enemy was already dead in a pool of blood at your feet. Had Quartz been dead, he'd probably have thought very little of Cavansite's decision to flick his forehead when she could've pressed her advantage: after all, he wouldn't have been there to see it.

He was not dead. In fact, although he was momentarily winded, the blow to his reproductive pride had done less damage than it had appeared to. Quartz caught his breath as he watched Cavansite blithely turn away and start to stroll off toward her weapon.

Foolish.

Perhaps she expected that she'd be able to hear his approach, if he came after her again. He'd shown her a consistent hand-to-hand approach thus far, establishing her expectations that he'd fight unarmed. If she hadn't read his file, it was possible that she might not even know what his weapon was.

Standing, Quartz called his weapon to hand. It shimmered to life, a long gold spear adorned with midnight ribbon, the spearhead worked with detailed, sharp-bladed filigree.

Silently, standing just where he was, so as not to draw her attention, Quartz drew back his arm and threw his spear at the side of Cavansite's thigh.

His aim was somewhat careful, designed not to fully impale or fracture. No killing. No crippling. According to the rules, those were off the table.

Cavansite had just straightened up, her star tipped spear in her hand, when there was a pain in her side. It wasn’t until she heard the clatter of metal against the ground, and her eyes laid on the spear…that she began to realize what had happened.

Slowly, she moved her hand to her side and drew it back up, staring at the red stain that was on her fingers and palm. Well. Well. Perhaps she should have learned the lesson taught in The Lion King, of not turning your back on someone. Huh. Well. This was an interesting, unexpected…slightly horrifying thing.

Her spear clattered to the ground once again and she dropped to a knee, wincing. Damn. Stupid. She had been so stupid. Her confidence was her undoing. How dumb could she be? Clearly dumb enough to sustain a pretty nasty wound in a simple sparring tournament. One that she was doing so well in. What a pain.

Literally. A pain.

SPECTATOR

As a spar went, each was utilizing non-standard tactics and openings well. That Quartz took the blows well, without being flustered, and made use of the new situations was very pleasing. Much more adaptive and more clinical than the stand-up-and-punch one would expect out of any pretty thing walking out of a gym or out the stage door of the entertainment industry.

What wasn't pleasing was how comparatively poorly the fight had been going. He was reading his opponent, analyzing her, but spending far too much on it and losing the whole for what he gained in private. As a captain, that sort of poor review would reflect badly on his commanding officer as well as himself. So much so that even Pigeon looked back at her now, for some comment on the proceedings, even as Quartz seemed to finally focus on more than just the strand of information, but of actually performing better in the exercise. "This IS a war game. Tactically the only rule is not to kill or maim the opponent irreparably. Aiming for sexual organs is no different than making use of soft tissue or exploit pressure with boxing someone's ear. If she'd not pulled her spear, had he chosen to block the stomach punch, and then fatally wounded him through the skull...THAT would be cause enough to see to her re-purposing to whatever brute and base existence matched her control and forethought."

"We must be skilled, swift, subtle, smart and strong enough to be better whatever the tactics. And we must be able to hold more than a single goal in mind." Schörl drummed her fingers once, looking back at the proceedings from Ceraskia's alluring eyes. "Which is where he is disappointing."

No advantage, even a bloody one, lasted long. It didn't occur to Quartz to gloat, or to flick Cavansite in the forehead: if he'd ever possessed that kind of whimsy (which maybe Dionysia had), two years with Schörl had well and thoroughly exorcised it.

His own spear was across the arena, now, with a contrail of faint bloodspray behind it to mark its passage. It would've cost energy to call it to hand, which -- at the moment -- was a waste. He could summon it later.

There was already a weapon conveniently next to his target.

Hers.

Quartz closed the space between them in a short dash, crouching to snatch up Cavansite's spear and bring it around in a hard swing in one quick movement. Murder was still off the table -- and outside of his interest, regardless -- so he swung the blunt end at the side of her head instead.

A concussion would serve his purposes well, if he could accomplish it -- he'd been focusing most of his attacks in that direction in general, in the hopes of dizzying his opponent. Quartz was mindful of the spear in his hand, though, and the likelihood that it would be gone after this: she'd have to burn a bit of her energy dismissing it or calling back to her own hand, if she wanted to disarm him of it.

Corrupted Ceraskia

it was a feat, keeping both the fight, and her general both in sight. She had looked to the woman for clarification and guidance, and it would have been incredibly rude to look away now. However, she was also meant to learn from the battle at hand. She managed, turning herself in her chair so she could keep the captains in her periphery, while, at least for a moment, the majority of her attention remained on her general as she spoke.

She would nod at the clarification, devoting it to memory. These matches among allies, these were themselves still battles, and outside the rules set in place all tactics were acceptable. It was good to remember.

There was the barest flick of her eye down to the drumming of elegant fingers, and the corrupted was relieved that it wasn't her down in that ring, garnering such a response from the regal woman. Dipping her head with a smile, she'd say, "Yes ma'am." Before turning again to watch the fight continue.

Spectator

The battle between the spear-wielding woman and Schörl's bare-chested pet was...entertaining, if nothing else. To start, it had seemed as though Quartz were doing quite well - both of the other captains were - but the captain with hair like an oil slick appeared to be attempting a slightly more cerebral match. Then things went south for whatever reason, and the match became something a bit different, but still entertaining.

Entertaining and kind of hilarious in an "oh man - that has got to hurt!" sort of way...or like youtube slap-fights hilarious. Or something like that; nothing to laugh over really but you just couldn't help shaking your head and wondering just how far this was going to go, how long it would continue.

At least, that's how it felt until Cavansite started playing dirty pool and kneed poor Quartz right in the delicate bits - it was, literally, a low blow and while Moonstone knew such things were effective, it wasn't exactly a tactic she approved of in a match like this one.

Actual combat? Yes. Anything was 'legal' then, but this was - and wasn't - actual combat and in her mind, a c**k-shot was just a touch unsportsmanlike. Or seemed it - probably in the heat of the moment, it felt like a logical tactical play...and who was she to argue against such an effective move? Cavansite had the other captain rolling into the familiar pill-bug curl of a man felled by a knee to the groin and Moonstone could only shake her head and sort of wince empathetically.

He's going to be lucky if everything works properly after this, poor b*****d.

Schörl spoke to the delicate looking corrupt and Moonstone had to admit she made sense - if they couldn't hold their own against one another...were they really going to have use for the Negaverse. Still a low blow, but...well, she couldn't really argue with the general's logic Contemplating the logistics of whether or not the genitals were fair game in a tournament like this one caused the dark haired captain to miss the next few exchanges of blows, but she tuned back in pretty quickly.

On top of the pain in her side, now there was pain in her head as she was whacked with the handle of her own spear. How…dare he? How dare he keep kicking her while she was down? Sure, she kicked him in the family jewels, but that had been a spur of the moment decision, and sure. Her follow up afterwards had sucked…but…but ow.

There were spots of light dancing across Cavansite’s vision, and for a moment, she wasn’t quite sure what to do…and finally she figured all she could do at this point was get the spear away from him. But how to do that. Getting it to come back to her hands was not something she was well practiced in, and even if she had been…she was a little too disorientated to do so.

Finally an idea was thrust upon her and she lunged, grabbing Quartz’s arm and biting down as hard as she could.

There. Who was top dog now? Drop her spear you fiend.

Things were under control, for the moment. Quartz had his opponent injured, he'd disarmed her, and she looked dizzied and would have trouble getting to her feet. He could hit her again, and she'd . . .

Quartz was shifting back for another solid swing, when suddenly Cavansite leaned forward and bit into his arm.

Bit into his arm.

He faltered, momentarily, his face going blank and bloodless. It wasn't that he was unprepared for dirty tactics -- she'd already kneed him in the groin once, after all -- but that it was . . . just . . .

Her teeth. Her mouth on his arm. It wasn't -- he couldn't --

His falter was enough to ruin his swing; what should've been a good, solid second crack against the skull was instead more of a glancing blow. Worse, he could still feel himself mentally pulling away from the situation, struggling to remain fully present. He was dimly aware that this wasn't remotely the time -- but however he tried to shake his mind back to the present, he couldn't seem to will it to happen.

Perfect. He hadn’t been expecting her to bite him…and honestly, she hadn’t really been expecting it either, so they were in the same boat in that respect. But the bite had done its job, and the next hit to her head…hadn’t been that bad. Maybe she was just used to being hit by now. Cavansite pulled away and wrenched her spear from Quartz’s grip.

There. Now she was back at it. She paused a moment, and flipped the spear over, aiming the bottom of the handle right at the back of one of the other captain’s kneecaps.

She was determined not to let a flesh wound…and a head wound get her down. This had become personal.

She wanted to win.

Quartz's daze, his eerie mental remove, left him unprepared to continue the battle properly. Whatever he tried, his adrenaline seemed to have given up on him, perhaps aware that this wasn't a real battle and he wasn't in real danger. His reflexes had gone dull: her spear to the back of his kneecap took the weight out from under him, and he fell. Slow, he barely managed to grab onto a hank of Cavansite's hair and tear at it as he dropped to the ground like a stone.
