Even for Quartz, who did not consider himself to possess much of a sense of humor, it was a little difficult not to laugh at how this fight was progressing compared to some of the others. There were fights of attrition, and then there were fights of attrition -- this battle was evidently going to be death by many small papercuts.

It wasn't a bad strategy, for the person who proved to have greater stamina -- that made fitness a large factor here. Both opponents were new recruits, so this sort of thing could impact where they ended up being placed for their careers . . . and sometimes simple skills or basically cleverness were the best fundamentals to start from.

He leaned back in his chair, faintly wishing for popcorn, and looked around to see if anyone else was enjoying this unusually comedic spectacle. Quartz noted another lieutenant standing off to the side -- otherwise, the ring seemed quiet except for the two combatants struggling at the center of it.

Perhaps more people would show up to enjoy the spectacle.

Idrialite flashed a grin back, and glanced briefly over to see the Captain that had now joined them. It was an active effort not to stare, because he'd not yet seen a uniform quite so. Well.

Cinnabar's had been skimpy, certainly, but this was...something else; practically shirtless, darkly iridescent, and generally. Well. Something else, absolutely.

Annabergite brought his attention back with his complaints about his weapon, and really, Idrialite had to admit, a sad little rubber flower was...less than impressive. Certainly less impressive than a relatively useable toy musket.

"Alright, I'll have to grant you that, this is a lot less stupid than a sad little rubber flower." The shove made him stumble, and to punctuate his point he took another swing, though it was fairly off-aim and not at all with the kind of force he knew he was capable of.

General Cinnabar (spectating)

Watching one Lieutenant's performance in the tourney meant she was late to arrive at another's. When Cinnabar finally made it into the 'stands' to watch Idrialite take on a lieutenant she didn't recognize, things seemed to be well underway already... Though there didn't seem to be as much damage as she was expecting.

Idrialite took something if an uncoordinated swing at his opponent and a in grimaced, seeing how ineffectual it was. Add another name to the list of lieutenants needed training... Though at this point might as well train them all together. Promote teamwork skills at the same time.

"COME ON, IDRIALITE!" She shouted, cupping a hand around her mouth. "Hit him! This isn't a tea party!"

Lt. Serpierite (Spectator)

One could see Serpierite make the connection with his weapon being his flower. This time, she couldn't help but to laugh. Having to wipe a tear away from her eye, she realized there was nothing to do but enjoy the battle. His situation was too useless for words. But in the same vein that the lieutenant was taking it, Annabergite's words were enchanting.. and she realized that they had drawn a few more in the audience. A captain, and a general she had seen in the last meeting.

Seeing that Idrialite already had a cheering general, she thought it wouldn't hurt to cheer for Annabergite. Waiting until he could see her, she gave him a wave, a smle, and some friendly words. "Annabergite, was it? Work at it."

"One day it will blossom into a beautiful bloom," Annabergite said with feeling - perhaps a little too much feeling. He managed to half dodge Idrialite's next swing, though the musket grazed his side, fortunately not doing nearly as much damage as before.

He took a step, turned, and got completely distracted by the shirtless agent standing off to the side, Anna's eyes widening.

"Well, hello, handsome, who are you -"

Focus, Anna.

They had a small audience now, which meant attention, and by the looks of it, from agents who were all on the gorgeous scale of things. Annabergite commended himself, once again, on his recruitment, because clearly beautiful people were meant to stick together.

"At least you can hit with yours," said Anna, and resisted the urge to add a comment about hitting things as he aimed the tip of his boot at Idrialite's leg again.

'Think of the Devil, apparently, and she will appear,' Idrialite thought briefly, resisting the urge to roll his eyes or otherwise snark at the woman who had brought him into the Negaverse. Cinnabar's encouragement was...well, sort of welcome, in the way he was sure a child welcomed an angry mother screaming at the football referee. At least she was there and...doing something maybe in the general direction of cheering him on.

"Yes, General, thank you for the encouragement," he shot in her direction, trying very hard to keep the sarcasm out of his tone, and then he returned his attention to his opponent.

"I mean, it's got to get better, right," Idrialite said, idly, "they can't expect you to prance around with a rubber flower forever." He hoped. Desperately. He had no desire to be at Cinnabar's rank and still playing toy soldier.

(Though he probably would be, anyway, on a bitter philosophical level.)

Anna's foot connected with his already bruised shin again, and he swore, taking a very wild swing with the musket that he was well and aware would do almost nothing.

Corrupted Ceraskia - (spectator)

What have I stumbled onto? Ceraskia had been rather transfixed, frozen at the very edge of the stands that circled the central ring. For a long time she had remained there, apparently unnoticed, just watching as the spectacle that was this spar unfolded. It was...comical, for lack of a better word. The one, the tin soldier, holding onto that reserved seriousness, while the other moved around the ring flippantly, complaining and giving declarations of bravado.

After while, having accepted that she was apparently going to linger for the duration, the petite corrupt slipped between a few of the benches so she could take a seat beside captain Quartz. He seemed in good spirits, and it wasn't hard to guess why if he'd been sitting there watching for any prolonged period of time.

Quartz had come to expect the unexpected in this ridiculous slap-fight of a contest -- but what he had not expected was one pair of eyes cast his way, then another. The taller combatant mostly managed to keep his composure, despite how his defense was starting to fall apart -- but the other one, when he could've been pressing his advantages more and finishing off the match, was instead taking this moment to . . .

. . . to catcall Quartz?

"I'm unimpressed," he called back, settling back in his chair to fold his arms over his chest. "You're winning and your opponent has better composure than you do."

He glanced over at Ceraskia when she sat next to him. "Your fellow basics," he said to her, gesturing outward at the match. "Come see how the other half lives."

The other recruits, that was, that didn't have Schörl guiding their training. The ones that were distractable as third-graders or lacked any combat training whatsoever. There were downsides to having Schörl as a master, and they were infinite -- but you learned how to survive.

Captain Raite (Spectator)

Captain Raite had intended on passing by, when he caught sight of a familiar silver-hair lieutenant, Lt. Serpierite to be specific. The smile on her face was unusual, drawing the normally dismissive captain to watch the fight as well. This tournament had drawn a bit more of a crowd than others, seeing those of varying ranks: a general, captains, and lieutenants. Was it worth watching..? The answer was painfully clear as the battle progressed. He was treated to a spectacle.. surreal as if he were watching a comedy show. But he reminded himself that it was a battle between lieutenants, and not a comedy show. Which.. made it worse, to be perfectly honest.

That Idrialite seemed to be mildly trained, at the very least. And a musket wasn't a bad weapon, at least in comparison to the candy lollipops he had seen earlier. From the way the female general focused her gaze upon him, he was under her supervision? Well, he wasn't acquainted with those who had risen in their ranks for the last few years. It was understandable since he had been working overseas. But Annabergite was a different story entirely.. whomever his general was, they had a great deal of work cut out for them. Especially as the lieutenant suffered a hit, having been distracted by a half-naked spectator (Quartz) on the other side. It was clear where his tendencies ran. While Raite wouldn't have particularly noticed in normal circumstances, the idiocy of being distracted during a battle to flirt made it overt enough.

And Lt. Serpierite seemed to be enjoying these silly antics from her grin. "Your folly is shining through." He slipped into a space next to her. She acknowledged him with a nod of her head before turning her eyes back towards the battle unfolding before them. That Annabergite was far more suited to the stage than the battle field. Those ironed clothes, the meticulously dyed hair, his avoidance of hits that would mar that face.. his weapon – a dainty rubber flower – wasn't useful by any means, but it suited his character to an extent. Reflecting on this lieutenant brought forth a sense of brooding, reminded Raite of a few people that distinctly annoyed him. But this was a lieutenant with room to grow, so Raite reminded himself not to cast judgement too quickly.

But it was a good thing that Anna faced a person of his own caliber, rather than a youma who in all likelihood, would have devoured him by this point. It had never been a fun task to explain to a general why one under their command went missing..

Corrupted Ceraskia

Dark lips pursed as the captain addressed her, gesturing down at the ring and the men fighting within it. She considered his comment, and with a wrinkling of her small nose she found she agreed with him, or at least the point she thought he was trying to convey to her.

"They lack any sense of discipline or dignity," she mused quietly back to him. "The one with the flower, more so than the one with the musket." The latter didn't seem quite so lackadaisical. He was composed, where his opponent was not, but he lacked training or direction. Judging by the span of his shoulders and the fit of his uniform, the man was fit, but she didn't think those muscles were earned through combat training.

A sly little smile tugged at the corner of her lips as she looked up at Quartz out the corner of her eye. "Perhaps the toy soldier will do better, with the other so transfixed with the sight of you."

Quartz nodded. "We'll see," he said noncommittally. "He's nearly done -- that would be as much skill as luck, at this point."

Still, he watched with interest -- the match couldn't last much longer, one way or the other. They'd see soon enough how it would turn out.

"Your toy soldier's one of General Cinnabar's new recruits, I believe. That would earmark him for SpecOps, in the normal course of things -- not every General likes to keep their fingers in different pies like ours -- but I wonder if he's as well-suited as she thinks."

If it had occurred to Quartz that Cinnabar was standing nearby and might be able to overhear his commentary, he showed no signs that it bothered him. Outranked or not, he'd never had any love lost for the half-youma or her methods.

Annabergite fluttered a winning smile at the Captain with the dark hair, though it faltered a bit at the negative comments, accompanied by the disapproving tone to his voice. For a fleeting moment, he had a vision of Obsidian saying something similar, and the idea that his general would be unimpressed with him at all made something unpleasant twist in Annabergite's stomach.

He did not want to give him any cause for disapproval. He'd been chosen, after all. He was special.

Annabergite hastily stumbled sideways away from Idrialite's musket again, a little sound of protest escaping. "I should hope so, it's really not suitable for someone like me, I wish I had something much more, you know." He waved his hand melodramatically. "More."

He swung a hand out, attempting to smack the man's shoulder.

Idrialite sighed to himself, not pleased to admit that slapfight and war of attrition aside, he was actually starting to get tired. Plus, he wasn't enjoying being humiliated in front of a group of spectators, and honestly, he just wanted this over with.

"More, right," he said, and then he brought his musket around for a hard strike right to the solar plexus, about ready to finish this if he could. He knew he was flagging, and at least if he want down n ow, he'd have gone down fighting.

Annabergite, to his credit, did not enjoy being made a spectacle of, though it was not the fault of Idrialite, who was actually fighting him. He felt his cheeks pink with irritation, casting a quick glance around, and then took several steps back.

Not fast enough, however, to escape the blow to his chest. Anna gave a gasping, wheezing cough, eyes flying wide as he staggered back, collapsing onto his behind in front of Idrialite, a hand held against his throbbing torso.

"Ow."

With one final burst of energy, Annabergite swept a leg sharply out in an attempt at knocking the other off of his feet.

Then he promptly lay down on the ground.

Idrialite was not prepared for the leg sweep, he was willing to admit it. It took him down, sending him sprawling, and he supposed he deserved it for the gut shot.

For a moment, he considered attempting to get back up, but really...no.

"Yield," he said, pride be damned, Cinnabar's inevitable bitching be damned, all of it be damned. "It was a good fight," even if it had been mostly and exchange of glancing blows, and more of a war of attrition than beating on each other, "I know when I'm beat."

However little he liked losing, however much his competitive instinct screamed to get back up and keep pushing, he had no desire to end up more seriously damaged.
