"Extremely useful when the answers we need are likely on the other side," Jeremiah agreed, "but I also don't know how to tell you to go about acquiring it as an ability. It seems, if anything, to be magical backwash as you phrased it. The more time you're there, the more time you spend involved, the more it seems like you gain traits you otherwise did not have before."

His fingers drummed against the table briefly before stopping. Jeremiah had gained his abilities as he had learned and progressed, working through trying to understand how the other side worked. "It's certainly a more useful trait than the first one I ended up with not long after I started dreaming, in any case."

When it came to being able to get in and out, Jeremiah still had no clue. There were more questions than answers to everything. Especially because the answers usually lead to more questions. "I suspect it has to do with the fact that we're meant to be over there in some way or another but that's merely a guess." A hand flicked through the air. "As for it being a cage, it's because it's what we've learned. There's something in there, a force, a being, whatever you want to call it. It-" he stopped and shook his head.

This was always hard to explain.

"Darkness is held back, kept from here over there. If it gets free, it takes over. Makes this place however it feels like making it and we're all put into place. Everything in it's place, all things in order."

“Isn’t that convenient,“ he responded mockingly, but not without genuine mirth. „Put out the effort and reap the reward. Yes, very convenient. It’s very old world positive reinforcement. Glad to see that Other Ashdown has the ingenuity to devise new paths.“ Still, such traditions were with their merits - Alois himself felt drawn to continue his explorations, especially at promise of new powers to come. Perhaps it was rash to consider Jeremiah correct in a matter so ill-understood, but he did not begrudge himself that decision.

„And what ability was it you ended up with at the start?“ Jeremiah’s declaration was framed strictly as a hook, and Alois saw no need to pass it up. „If this is some kind of queer recruitment pattern executed by the place of Other Ashdown, I should like to know what it’s handing out - and why I haven’t received any special powers that I myself can exercise. It’s a shame, really.“ He turned his attention to fingernails grown too long for the hands of old-fashioned men. „I could be a very useful tool. But if Other Ashdown doesn’t see reason to reward me, then I suppose I’ll find my thrills elsewhere. Ach, so!“ He smiled again.

„But, if you’re right about this force held back, then I don’t have the luxury to wait for Other Ashdown to entice me. A world with everything in its place is exactly what I’ve been turning from in my short years. For as much as I enjoy books, I’ll be damned before I inherit my parents’ bookstore. I’d just as soon sell it at discount to your roommate as a satellite branch. Everything in its place… What a mockery of what makes life worth tolerating.“

He supposed, then, that his investigation efforts were indeed decided.

With all the meticulous care that he exercised on his own projects, Alois pulled his wallet from back pocket and produced from it a die-cut card, clean and concise in its display. He offered it to the detective thusly. „Next time you find yourself going to Other Ashdown, call me. We’ll make a party of it.“ His eyes, however, belied more seriousness than his tone allowed.

"Some would likely argue that there's some kind of sentience to that place with the way that things happen." Jeremiah had a wry look on his face, barely concerned amusement in his eyes. It was a sardonic amusement at that.

"If I take aim at something, whether it to fire a gun or throw a piece of paper, I can't miss." His lips were pressed to a thin line; displeasure was obvious. It made a mockery of his own natural skill. "Often with a rather elaborate show like a Rube Goldberg device."

A grin, something troublesome, spread across Jeremiah's face briefly and then faded. "Then you can understand just why it can't be allowed. Things that try to label, to hold you and pin you to something, are not things that most of us would want anything to deal with. A power that could likely bring you to order? It's bad news." Still ... some would prefer it and Jeremiah could understand it even if he personally did not want anything like that.

He had spent too much of his life fighting against such a thing.

Taking Alois's card, Jeremiah was pulling out his own. For once he did not have to write his personal number on the back, he was keeping a few on hand now that held his number already written down. "I'll do so. Likewise, here's mine. If you find yourself with any questions or need assistance, let me know." The humor about the party was appreciated. "I'll make sure to bring something along to make it a truly festive party."

“Maybe you should start playing shooters, then. Hit the championships for Call of Duty. Compete in that marksman show… What was it? American Marksman? It’d be easy money for you. Could live a helluva lot better that way.“ An inability to miss sounded quite handy to Alois. Was it possible to pinch magical abilities off of another? He hoped so; being able to shoot and kill in a land like Other Ashdown might prove terribly advantageous. Jeremiah looked like he hated the ability anyway. What a waste.

„Looks like I’ll be joining you later then, Detective.“ Alois flipped the card over before pocketing it. „I’ll call you when I need you to shoot someone. At least I know you won’t miss.“ He turned from the man then and exited the break room. There would be no need to dig further into the library today. His answers were never written down.
