It was that final change in tone as Hyunae approached her friends that snapped something in Ethiriel. Her fists clenched and her expression hardened, brows furrowing above her light green eyes. Candice's words of apology hardly registered as the Frei scoffed to herself, lifting her chin in the direction that the young blind girl had ran off to.
"Hyunae!" Ethiriel called. She tried to tame her expression as best as she could despite her young friend's shared disability -- perhaps it was for the sake of her friends.
Tearing away from Candice's touch, the Frei quickly hovered forward to reach the young girl.
Clearing her throat upon approach, Ethiriel's fists remained balled at her sides . Stopping just a few feet short of the girl and her companions, the Frei couldn't help but take a deep breath -- whether to calm herself or not. "Hyunae... may I speak with you in private?"

Candice's worries managed to taper off as she focused on getting Ethiriel and her away from the cabins, out of mind from the trouble for a little while, but that peace was torn away from her quickly. In the time Candice had known Ethiriel, she'd never seen the Frei move against anyone - and there she went, bounding towards Hyunae's direction without a second thought.
Ethiriel had said a name, too, before that - Hyunae - but it took a moment for Candice to comprehend it, and she stared dumbfoundedly back at the direction of the cafeteria. Candice didn't call out to her - neither Hyunae nor Ethiriel had gotten far by the time the Frei's shouting reached the younger girl, who clumsily halted in her steps.
"Ethiriel," Candice said, slowly and calmly, almost in warning to the Frei. Hyunae, however, remained where she was, gripping her cane tight while she listened carefully to the Frei's words.
Behind her, she could hear the voices and steps of her friends fleeting farther and farther away. They didn't seem to notice that Hyunae had stopped following them, and the sting of that realization made Hyunae's grip ever tighter.
"Why? Can I go get dinner first?" Hyunae asked, without pause.
"Sure, you get dinner first, Hyunae," Candice replied in Ethiriel's stead - but there Hyunae remained, waiting for the Frei's response. "Eth... this should wait," she brunette continued, tone pleading.

Ethiriel's answer was interrupted by Candice's, resulting in the Frei's expression morphing -- first, into anger, letting out a scoff before it melted into frustration and eventually settled into a neutral position. Her fists remained balled down at her sides.
"Sure," the Frei nearly hissed, turning her head towards Candice's voice. "Enjoy your dinner."
As soon as the words escaped her lips, Ethiriel's shoulders slumped and she sighed. Where had that anger come from so suddenly? Her features fell into sadness, lifting her arms to fold before her chest tightly, head tilted slightly downward. Listening for Hyunae's retreating steps, the Frei floated a tad closer to Candice before offering an arm for the counselor to take.
This wasn't going right at all. This trip was supposed to make her feel better.

Ethiriel's blithe response shocked Candice, and she could only stare imploringly at the Frei while Hyunae took a moment to process what she'd heard - it was new, coming from Ethiriel, and frightened her. "Okay," Hyunae replied, somewhat harshly in return, then quickly turned on her heel to run onward to the cafeteria.
Hyunae hadn't meant to make Ethiriel angry - but she didn't want to deal with it right now. Just like everything else. It was scary, and it was work, and she was tired of work.
Once Hyunae was out of sight, Candice gingerly took up Ethiriel's arm. She breathed in - it was better, she decided, not to question Ethiriel on her sudden burst of anger. One look at Ethiriel only confirmed her decision.
"Let's go somewhere quiet, okay? The rest stop near here is nice," Candice offered, holding Ethiriel's shoulder in condolence. "We don't even have to talk... if that's what you'd like."

The feeling of Candice's arm in Ethiriel's felt oddly strange, foreign, for that moment once she was taken up. All of the Frei's senses were flared and she could feel the hair on her arms and neck rise. Why were things going so wrong?
"I'm... yes. Yes, that... sounds lovely."
Her exhaustion was clear.
Free hand rising to meet Candice's on her arm, Ethiriel closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Even she didn't know where that anger had come from, but just as quickly as it happened it was gone, replaced with guilt and sadness over her own actions. A simple, quiet, "I'm sorry," was the most she could offer as she was led to the rest stop.
Maybe she'd get another shot at talking to Hyunae later... though Ethiriel wouldn't have put it past the girl if she didn't want to after that display.
