The umbrella was wiggled, the little ghosts swaying from side to side. "It is, honestly. You should go visit her at some point. Bring a book with you for her." A pause. "Or books."
His posture shifted at the mention of magic and the question of it. "Well ..." Jeremiah let out a breath. "Do you remember the maze?" Loathe as he was to mention it. "The ice that I left in my wake?"

brevity's not my strong suitJeremiah had been about to respond to the first text when the second came in. He ended up nearly snorting his drink and then smoothed a hand across his face with a laugh. get on up and walk on out Jeremiah went in when Chris stepped back. He was not rude and would only enter when given the okay. Blue-green eyes went immediately and looked everything over to make sure it was not at all like how Autumn's place had been. Thankfully it was not even if his computer desk looked like he had been at it for a few days. When the door closed, his eyes were focused back on Chris and he let out a sigh. "No, I am not a hallucination but you're going to make yourself ill at this point if you've been up that long." He shook his head. "What have you been looking into that's kept you this wound up?" PeanutButterpies jeremiah completely encourages this.

"I'll ask Alg for some recommendations then," Chris hummed, watching the ghosts sway. "I have been meaning to visit."
Chris' smile slipped at mention of the maze. "I.." Watching both, Alg and Jer die in the maze, then again all over while he was in it. Watching Zac die, seeing that thing. He pressed his lips together, forced himself just to think about what he was saying. A flicker of ice on the bushes before it was swallowed by leaves. "I remember it, yeah. What was that about?"

Oh well that was embarrassing. What was that saying his dad had always said? Something about assuming.

Chris just shrugged in reply, twisting his hands together. "I just. I can't really sleep and it was.. productive."
No, it was hard to sleep when all he could see was the maze behind his eyes. He scrubbed at his face, willing it away.
"Just. Ways to protect you, Autumn, Alg, Zac. Everyone, anyone, that maze was awful and I watched you.. watched you die and I couldn't-" He stuttered his way through, watching again as Alg was covered in the tar again right before his eyes.
There was a turn and short sprint to the bathroom, Chris heaving up some water. That was definitely cue he should've slept by then.

"You know the longer you go without going to see Alg, the more he's going to be disgruntled at you ..." Jeremiah shook his head, shooting Chris an amused glance.
Which, of course, faded away at confirmation of remembrance of the maze. "It's our will that gives us magic. There's likely several ways to practice magic here but the way I learned it is what you saw in the maze."
His umbrella was passed to the young man to hold for a moment.
"You hold an image, a thought, a feeling of what you want in your mind and then say or do something to attach the magic to that and bring it out." Jeremiah gestured for Chris to come stand next to him. The moment he did the older man was rubbing his hands together and then spreading them apart.
A word was murmured under his breath - it definitely sounded like protect or pro-something - and it sounded heavy as it rolled out across his tongue. A breeze came from nowhere and circled them them and then, before Chris's eyes, a hazy barrier appeared around both men. It glimmered briefly visible before it faded away from sight.
There was a slight chill in the air now that made the cold of other ashdown a little worse.
"Go ahead," he tilted his head towards where Chris had seen the barrier. If he reached out and touched it he would feel the cold prickle against his palm but it was still there.

The next bit, however, had him letting out a displeased noise. He was going to have to have a talk with Autumn. get on up and walk on out Jeremiah was still giving Chris a disapproving look but it softened somewhat at the mention of not being able to sleep. It was understandable given what had happened to them in the maze, in the mansion, and with all that the young man had seen. He had Algie there with him and they had been able to comfort each other. Chris, on the other hand ... This was why he was reaching out to people, whether he said anything or not. Before he could say anything Chris was bolting to the restroom. Jeremiah was a step behind him but when he heard the sounds of heaving, the silver-haired man was heading to the kitchen instead. The kettle was found and filled and put on the stove to heat. Then he was heading towards the bathroom after the blonde. A hand towel was pulled off a rack so that he could run water on it and then crouch down to offer it out to him. "I understand that you want to find ways to protect people but I will tell you what I told Autumn: in this kind of shape you cannot protect anyone. The first priority is your own personal health so that you can be at your best to help everyone."

"I swear I'll go visit him soon!" Chris protested, feeling much like he was promising to call his mom or visit his grandparents. He didn't mind that much though, it was nice to know that someone wanted to see him and that he could actually visit them.
The umbrella was accepted, along with the gesture, and Chris watched closely as Jer began. He shivered slightly at the breeze, unsure what to make of it and then it was.. just there.
"I..." He glanced towards the other man then reached a hand out. It was cold but it was there, completely formed. "That's amazing. You just.. imagine it? And does what you say matter?"

He didn't know much of what else to say, except that he was just grinning from ear to ear. He definitely had to defend Autumn at least a little though.

Chris took the towel with a small murmur of thanks and he pressed it against his eyes before rubbing his mouth with it. He was silent for a moment, then looked up at Jer.
"I know but even when rested I still feel so behind. Like you and Autumn and everyone are so far ahead and I... I don't want to be the weakest link." He huffed out a weak laugh, self depreciating. "Even now I'm causing trouble when I just want to help. I just don't know what to do anymore."
He rested his head on the porcelain, before finally adding on, "I don't think I'm making much sense am I."

Jeremiah just shot him another look at the comment he'd go soon but his focus was otherwise pulled away. His shoulders rolled and he let out a breath. This was not as tiring as it had been but it was still something he was working on.
"Something like that, yes. For me it's an image in my mind, a memory of wanting to protect." Blue-green eyes looked far away for a moment before they focused onto Chris. "I attach that to a gesture and a word that I don't actively use and it gives the magic shape. It becomes a spell basically."
He was walking the edge of the barrier, fingers pressing against it and testing. If he pushed hard enough he would go through but that's because he wanted to be able to if need be. A moment later he was pushing his fingers into it, dragging through them and letting out another breath of cold, another murmured word.
It was gone.

Not that he was still happy about it. Except that when it came to some of them their abilities were not obvious at all. get on up and walk on out Jeremiah was still crouched, watching Chris for a moment before he simply sighed. A hand rested briefly against the young man's shoulder. "You are but some part of this is your lack of sleep talking." He moved to sit on the floor next to him instead of being crouched; it was just easier. "If you're worried about these things, then do what I do. Set aside time to research, to learn, to work together as necessary to understand." Fingers raked through silver hair. "Being part of this is not that different than the work I do for a living. You have to know your limits, know when to step back, know when you need to let up. If you don't, you're just jeopardizing the entire case." Definitely repeating himself but it sometimes helped. "My advice would be to get rest and then start this again but with your health in mind. That is what will make you a weak link - if you don't take care of yourself."
