"Leila has had some very strange experiences, but besides that she's fine," Eve assured. And she was grateful her partner was a dreamer: it was making her own ordeals feel a bit more normal than they would have otherwise.

The cake arrived then -- each piece smelled enticingly of orange and ginger, and had a dollop of raspberry compote artfully spooned on top. Eve was testing her fork against the plate, not quite reaching out to get a bite just yet, contemplating: "Five years is a long time for phantom limb to set in, I imagine. My toes twitched a little bit, too. That's about eight years for me." She'd gotten married to Leila a year-and-then-some after. "So we've gone through the motions of getting to know our bodies better than most, at least once. That puts us a little ahead, I think."

He made a mental note of the name - family - and nodded. "Good. That's probably the first good thing I've heard about that place." That it didn't chew up Eve's wife and leave everyone around her in pandemonium? Yeah, he'd count their blessings.

Lucas didn't immediately pick up a fork, not moving yet, just watching Eve's gestures with it. "We've that to our credit, I guess," he said at length, "but to what ends? I don't know about you, but I only 'changed' when she was there. I've had aches before and pains and -- and images after but nothing else." His eyes flickered to her face. "I haven't felt any differently since. Is your experience similar, or..." It was hard to even ask. "...have you changed?"

"Sometimes I wake up to loss of color vision, and an enhanced sense of smell, so... I can't say for certain I'm not shifting in my sleep." Eve finally took a small bite of cake, her posture melting briefly into enjoyment of the flavor. The pastries here were made with coconut oil, making them extra light and cleanly sweet. "I'm curious, though... if we can will our human selves back into being, it must work the other way..."

Surely they weren't meant to spend their lives willing away inconvenient transformations in an attempt to retain some masquerade of normalcy. Eve had already dealt with all that nonsense once in her life. She was not going to trick herself into being subject to it again.

He watched her with a quiet smile, as if he made the cake himself and it pleased him to see her enjoy it. "That's ... peaceful, at least. My only other experiences, ah..." Lucas glanced to the cake. "...aren't really things to repeat while eating."

The words surprised him, drawing his brows upwards in surprise. "Do you think so -- ?" But why wouldn't it be so? She had said to remember his hand. If he went backwards, would it work the other way...? Unbidden, the memory of the black fur thick over his hand returned, the curve of the claws, real enough for him to glance down to it against his arm. He'd been resisting the idea so much -- was he the reason he was so tense and wound up?

Nothing happens!

Well, okay. It hurts a little, like punching a wall. Like his bones are trying to warp, but failing.

So really. Nothing happens.

"No luck?" Eve asked. She looked at the unchanged arm, and back to Lucas. "Oh, well... go on, try some cake."

"I don't know if it's luck." His hand stretched, fingers curled, joints popped. "It hurts, a little, that's...unpleasant."

Lucas sighed softly, looking back to Eve and doing as bid. Picking up the fork with his prosthetic hand, he neatly sliced a small piece off of the edge. "What happens now?" he asked quietly, taking his bite.

It was sweet. A strange sweet, but not unpleasant. His lips pursed in thought, brows lofted. Not bad.

Eve shrugged, while methodically taking bite by bite of her own cake. "It looks like we're going to have to wait if we want to know more." The fact he'd felt something, though, was perhaps enough for now. "I don't think we were ever meant to figure out everything here. Maybe we need to find the others."

A small rush of anticipation ran through her at the mention of others like them. She was already starting to become attached to the other people Lady had mentioned, even though she knew next to nothing about them. Not even names.

Then she paused, and reached over to her handbag, pulled out a wallet, and from the wallet retrieved a card. This she slid across the table to Lucas -- it had her store's name and address, as well as her phone number and e-mail. "I told Lady that she can let them know about my shop, so hopefully they'll be stopping by. Do you want me to keep you posted?"

Others.

He looked up sharply, alarmed. "There's more?" Lucas very nearly sounded distressed by the idea. The very last thing he would have wanted was others suffering the same affliction as them. It was nice to know he wasn't alone, but not on the scale of many.

Pale eyes didn't shift until the card was nearly on his side, making him shake his head and blink at it. " -- yeah, I would, actually." He fumbled with his wallet out of his back pocket, producing his own card and sliding it to Eve. "You have my cell phone already, but if it's dead -- that's work, and it gets forward to me at home if I'm not there."

His brows knit tight over his eyes, now worried. "I don't -- want anyone else to be as lost as I've been. I hope they're as graceful with it as you've managed."

"Worrying more might turn out to be the right reaction," Eve pointed out. "We'll have to wait and see."
