CollegeAleksy pauses to peek over at Thorne's work. He smiles; he goes back to his own drawings; he says: "It was not something someone said. It was a statement of fact." He looks over at Thorne again, Thorne and not his work, and thinks about offering his hand. His fingers curl, he runs his thumb across his own knuckles. He goes back to drawing.

College Thorne watches Aleksy. Not the scenery. Aleksy. His mouth works, feeling empty. He turns away and bites his knuckle. "Well," he says, "I'm glad at least it put you here." He shrugs. And then he looks up. "Can I draw you?" He smiles, half-heartedly. "The scenery grew boring."

Aleksy thinks about it, and then he smiles, a little ghost of a thing. "I am, too," he says, hands stilling again. With a shrug, he answers Thorne: "If you want to."

Thorne hadn't realized the question made him nervous until Aleksy answered. His pen stutters across the page, and he wonders why he wants to draw Aleksy with eyes as dark as night.
He wonders why it seems impossible to catch him with charcoal and ink, but he also wonders why that doesn't surprise him at all.
